THE SEVEN GATES OF HELL – YORK, PA

By: Christopher “Lobo” Ostrowski
NPS Demonology Department Chair

In the Township of Hellam sits one of the biggest mysteries in York Pa.,“The Seven Gates of Hell”. It was the subject of one of Mike Argento’s York Daily Record columns http://ydr.inyork.com/

several years ago and can even be found on ‘Wikipedia’ www.wikipedia.com

, an encyclopedia web site.

In the 1800s a colossal mental asylum stood in the woods of York off Toad Road. Buried in the desolate Pennsylvania woods, it was viewed as the perfect place to ship the insane from all across the state. This was a nightmare straight from Hell. It was home of only the most deranged, most unfortunate souls in PA.

The area is an overgrown wooded area off Trout Run Road in the northwestern part of the Township. I will show rumors that are attached to the area. Supposedly an insane asylum located there caught fire. The patients did manage to get out of the Building, but seven gates surrounding the asylum trapped them. The scene was pure horror. Some of the most deranged and dangerous people in all Pennsylvania had disappeared into the woods as the Asylum burned spread throughout the area. When the fire was finally under control, officials set out to corral all of the inmates. Frightened of the asylum’s inmates reputations and unsure of how to handle the patients, the search party was aggressive with extreme prejudice. There where reports of beating into submission some of those they found and killing others. To this day, no one in York acknowledges this publicly. The ones that survived, reportedly lived on to stalk and murder behind the Seven Gates

Another story Is a typical “Mad Doctor” story. An eccentric local doctor Is said to have erected a large gate at the entrance to his property. Then the rumors sprang up that there was a series of gates. They were all beyond that large one along Toad Road (cue scary music) leading deep into the woods. Out of the Seven Gates, it is believed that no-one who passed the fifth gate ever returned.

Apparitions are often seen along these paths. Strange noises and menacing screams are heard frequently.
The official statement on the The Hellam Township Website, listed below is:
“Just as there seems to be no truth to the rumors about the “Seven Gates of Hell” (no asylum ever existed there, and the local doctor had only one gate and that was to keep out trespassers), there is also no truth to the story that Hellam Township was named for ‘hell’! The fact is that our Township’s name is a corruption of the name ‘Hallam’, named for Hallam, England.”

Mysteries of the City of Cahokia

By: Stephanie Kelly

Located just outside of St. Louis, Illinois is the Cahokia Mounds. Most people, outside of the St. Louis areas, are not aware of a rather mysterious archeological treasure right under their nose! Cahokia is one of of only eight World Heritage sites in North America and by some miracle it still has survived through the development of the areas.

Sitting at about 4,000 acres, 2,200 of which are a preserved state historic site, Cahokia Mounds is classified as the largest archaeological site in the United States. It is believed that the civilization that created Cahokia dates back to around 700 A.D. The site consists of at least 104 individual mounds that appear to show a large and sophisticated civilization long before London or even Rome.

These mounds appear to be prior to some of the known Native tribes that later controlled the areas. It is believed, but not proven, that the Chickasaw, Seminoles and Choctaw were all descendants of the people that once inhabited Cahokia. Others lean more toward the Cherokee, Creek and Natchez being their descendants. All that is known for sure is that the Late Woodland culture inhabited this area about 700 C.E. and there appears to be approximately a 200 year gap between the Woodland Culture and the development of the Mounds.

It appears that Cahokia was slowly abandoned by late 1300 AD. Excavations appear to show no sign of any disaster, warfare or illness that could’ve caused the abandonment of Cahokia but scientists believe that overcrowding, social upheaval or inadequate supplies may have been a cause leading to the end of the Cahokia Mounds.

Not only does Cahokia have a mysterious scientific and archeological history but it also has a mysterious paranormal history. Many people have reported seeing shadows, balls of lights visible with their own eyes, along with hearing chanting or rattling on the ‘Monks Mound.’

Cahokia Mounds are still being excavated to this day and we could only hope that more information would become available concerning it. Who were the people that lived at Cahokia Mounds? Where did they come from? What could be the cause of the unexplained experiences at the Monks Mound? What happened to the tribe or civilization that lived here for so long?

The Minhocao “Big Earth Worm”

The Minhocao “Big Earth Worm”
By: Tamara Ortiz

The Minhocao, which means big earth worm in Portuguese, this creature is said to reside in the forest of South America. You will find a few descriptions of the Minhocao but the most common description of the creature resembles a giant worm or serpent like creature with black skin, a mouth full of teeth that cannot be missed and a pair tentacles that come from its head. There are some sightings that claim the Minhocao also hasa pig like snout.

The Minhocao is said to be a burrowing animal and leaves enormous trenches and holes in the earth in its wake. From reported sightings of the Minhocao and investigations of the suspected trenches and holes from the creature suggest a length of 75 to 150 feet with a body diameter up 15 feet. There have been many alleged occurrence where the Minhocao has been blamed for houses and manmade sutures caving in and rivers have had their courses altered. These occurrences will happen after a very heavy rain, suggesting that the Minhocao prefers to travel during or after these rains because the earth is made softer for them to move easily through.

Cryptozoologist Karl Shuker has a theory that the Minhocao is of the giant caecilian family, the description of the Minhocao fits this theory but the reported size of the Minhocao is much larger than the description of the giant caecilian. Bernard Heuvelmans who was known for being a scientist, explorer and research suggested that these creatures were surviving glyptodont. (Glyptodon was a large, armored mammal of the subfamily Glyptodontidae, which lived during the Pleistocene epoch.)

There are many theories surrounding the Minhocao regarding its origin and its habitat. If you ever find yourself deep in the forest of South America and it happens to be raining you may want to keep your eye out for this allusive creature for it is said the Minhocao
can swallow a man whole…but of course this is just legend or is it.

The Demon named Astaroth

By: Christopher “Lobo” Ostrowski
Demonology Team Chair

The Demon named Astaroth
The Demon Astaroth is a unique Demon. There are many different tales related to this Grand Duke of Hell.

The one I will use is the one that is more plausible to me. That Astaroth is a Female Demon.

The name Astaroth (sometimes spelled Ashtaroth) probably derives from Astarte, a Canaanite fertility goddess worshipped by the Philistines and at Sidon. She was also an early goddess among the Sumerians, known to them as the “Queen of Heaven”. In each culture, though Her Role may have slightly been different, She was always a powerful mother figure. She was a caretaker to humanity in them all. She was possibly the most worshiped deity of her time.

It is believed that the goddess Astarte has become one of the most slandered deities since modern religions took over in the Middle East. Even the name “Astaroth” is a perverted version of Astarte. It is made to sound vile, evil and shameful in the pronunciation of the old languages of the time. When the followers of the “New Religions” came into power, they wanted to remove all sympathy for the old beliefs from existence. They vilified all the reputations of the Babylonian gods and goddesses into “evil demons”.

Astaroth is something of a politician among the demons. She will counsel both humans and demons alike. But she will only help those humans who still believe in her as a goddess. It’s only fair; you must treat a Lady like Lady. She has been beaten up over the centuries, some flowers and chocolates can go a long way. She can help one gain a good reputation. She can create friendships between her followers and people with power and social status in the community. She knows all about the past, present, and future. She also can show to her followers secrets through the prophetic dreams and visions. She can also teach all about the sciences and humanities as well.

Astarte/Astaroth is said to be very tall, beautiful, and elegant with fair skin and long blonde hair. It is said that everything she does is with great ease and grace. She will only work for the greater good of those who are Her true followers. Those who wish to use her gifts to take unjustly from others will be denied her good graces.

Astaroth is said to be the Great Duchess of Hell, in the first hierarchy with Beelzebub and Lucifer; She is part of the evil trinity. To those in Demonolatry the relationship between Astaroth and Astarte can be significant because the possible connection indicates spiritual power. Such power which Modern Religions have strived to diabolize and destroy is returning to help the people.

THE INN AT JIM THORPE

By: Christopher “Lobo” Ostrowski
Demonology Team Chair

24 Broadway, Jim Thorpe, PA 18229

Phone:(800) 329-2599

The Inn at Jim Thorpe in Carbon County is a New Orleans style hotel that dates back to 1849, when built in 1833.

The inn, originally built as the ritzy New American Hotel, was erected on the ashes of the burned out White Swan Hotel. The Guests have reported, the usual Paranormal sightings of, seeing orbs and shadows in their photographs, and even in their beds. TVs operate by themselves, objects move. Some guests in Room 315 have reported to be awakened to find the chairs in their room have been turned upside-down. It should be noted that several famous people have spent nights here, including Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, President William H. Taft, Buffalo Bill, Thomas Edison and John D. Rockefeller.

There is one ghost, that some say, remains at the inn because she is welcome there. It is believed, back when it was called The American House, She and her lover had planned a rendezvous there. They were supposedly to reserve a room on the same floor. But a clerical error by a new employee at the front desk, gave her a room on a different floor than that of her lover. Of course upon his arrival, he wasn’t able to find her. Desperate in her situation, and feeling spurned by her love, she ended up committing suicide in her room.

It became The Inn at Jim Thorpe in 1988.

Here are some other Rooms that might be of interest to Investigators.
It is reported that a Nurse becomes quite annoyed when you occupy the same bed as a patient she is tending to, in Room 310. If you lie down in the same the bed as her Spectral Patient, it is said you can feel her Icy Grip. You may also see her white figure. Another Spirit has been reported there, too, a tall man with slicked back hair.

Room 211 has a problem with the TV going on and off by itself. My belief, since it targets men, it’s a “Football Widow”, JUST KIDDING. Also items disappear then reappear in different spots. The Spirit is definitely mischievous. One Gentleman reportedly left his boots by the door, only to wake and find them outside his room. Towels are sometimes shoved in the toilet. The sounds of laughing children are heard when there are no children around. Cigar and cigarette smoke is smelled when no one is around,
Down the hall at Room 303, there are unexplainable shadows and orbs.

In Room 203, a guest claimed that a ghost put his cell phone in the refrigerator.
A faceless lady in Victorian attire has disappeared into closed doors. Guests have supposedly seen many spirit shadows in the downstairs foyer and lobby, and have orb and mist photographs to bolster their claims. The Innkeeper has even set up a little disclaimer about Spirits in the house.

The Secret Language of Symbols in the Occult

The Secret Language of Symbols in the Occult
By: Tamara Ortiz

Sign and symbols rule the world, not words or laws. ~ Confucius

Hello Paranormal Seekers,

Many symbols used in the Occult and for magickal purposes share similar shapes, forms, ideas, meanings and histories. Knowing the similar histories and ideas of representation behind certain shapes and images found within symbols is “The Secret Language of Symbols.” What is wonderful about symbols is even in different cultures that don’t speak the same language, there will be an understanding of symbols shared amongst these cultures. The language of symbols encompasses the very simple in design to the very complicated. It can take many years to learn but learning how to read and decipher smaller/simpler symbols will lead you to being able to decipher more complicated symbols as you further your knowledge. I am going to discuss the most common symbols circle, triangle and the square.

The CIRCLE

The circle is a symbol of boundary and enclosure, moon and sun, life and death and is found in many cultures its representation is a powerful and profound one. It represents the infinite energy of nature, and of the universe. The circle represents many things but usually the representation is the cycle of a system such as the circle of life and other representations like it. The circle can also be the visual form of the word “us” when a symbol is placed within a circle this can mean group or can even trigger are brain to be drawn into the symbol within the circle, making the viewer connect with the representation involved.

The circle represents what is spiritual and sacred in nature. In Chinese symbolism the circle expresses the heavens and when this circle is viewed within a square (the square representing the earth) this symbolizes the union between heaven and earth. The well-known symbol of yin and yang is circular; this speaks to the duality for a unified balance. Many Celtics believe circles to be symbols of protection. In Egyptian cultures the circle had many meanings but one of its most profound was the representation of the sun god. Throughout the world you can find the symbolism of the circle and its many meanings.

The TRIANGLE

The meaning of the triangle is structured in the number three, the vertical side will represent one aspect, the horizontal side another and then the two sides combining represents the hypotenuse, such as:

Mind, Body, Spirit
Past, Present, Future
Father, Son, Holy Ghost
Love, Truth, Wisdom
Waxing, Waning, Full

The triangle stands out from others shapes in its symbolism because it’s the one shape depending on your view, the meaning can change entirely. For example if a triangle is sitting flat on one of its sides it represents fire, male energy, active, up, father and solar energy but when you flip it on to its point it represents water, female energy, passive, down, mother and lunar energy. The triangle is very much tied to the number three, most practices of the occult incorporates the number three within its teachings thus represents three sides which equates to the triangle. You can find the triangle used in the Celtic culture in the form of the triskelion the triquetra and many other Celtic knots. Another well-known trinity is “Celtic Life:” Birth (renewal), Death (closure) and Life (transcendence). Triangles also represent the elements of fire, water, earth and air. Greek symbolism uses the triangle to represent to delta glyph and this is in representation of a doorway meaning through balanced thought and emotion you receive a higher knowledge.

The SQUARE

The square’s fours sides and straight lines represent foundation, structure, stability, honesty, earth, integrity, male energy and the physical realm. Buddhist believe the square represents the human and the circle represents the divine and when together this means a balance within you. The square can represent the heart in some cultures, the four sides stand for angelic, diabolic, human and divine which equals awareness and inspiration. Although more often than not the symbolism of the square has four parts, it can also represent opposites such as light and dark, up and down, physical and spiritual. In the Hindu culture, the square represents the order of the universe. It is said when you draw the square in representation of the four elements it also stabilizes the elements because of the structural properties of the square.

Other symbolic meanings of the square:
The four cardinal directions (north, south, east, west)
The four major season (winter, spring, summer, autumn)
The four cosmic elements (suns, moons, planets, stars)
The four common phases of human life (birth, child, adult, death)
The four prime elements (fire, earth, air, water)

The vast knowledge of symbols and the secret language found within is a never ending interpretation. There is so much more that can be discussed regarding this amazing secret language. Even the shapes and the symbolism I have discussed today could go so much further and deeper into what they mean, there use in the occult and the history from which they came.

So…When you see a single shape, do you see the symbolism behind it? If so then you speak the secret language of symbols!

New Findings in the Drake Equation

By: Stephanie Kelly

In 1961, a man by the name of Dr. Frank Drake developed an equation in the attempt to get the Scientific Community talking about the possibility of civilizations other than on earth. To put it simple; the equation was originally meant to summarize the main concepts that scientists must think about when considering unexplained and questionable radio communication.

This equation, N = R* x fp x ne x fe x fi x fc x L, contains many variables including:
N – the total number of civilizations in the Milky Way
R – the average rate of star formation
Fp – the fraction of formed stars that have planets
Ne – the average number of planets per star that has planets
Fl – the fraction of those planets that have actually developed life
Fi – the fraction of planets with intelligent, civilized life
Fc – the fraction of these civilizations that have detectable communications
L – the length of over which these civilizations release detectable communications

For a little bit of honesty behind this equation; Frank Drake originally made this equation just to get people talking! He wanted to figure out a way of combining the work of SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) with mathematics and science. Drake come up with this theory after reading an article by Cocconi and Morrison which fueled his desire to communicate with other beings.

Drake used a 25 meter dish at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory to document his search for signals not created on earth. He named this research ‘Project Ozma.’ Dr. Drake planned on hosting a SETI meetings at the observatory and his preparation for this meeting he, somewhat unintentionally, developed this equation.

Now, let’s jump ahead to 2016! Adam Frank and Woodruff Sullivan, with the University of Rochester, announce their findings after ‘tweaking’ the Drake Equation. Most scientists, prior to Frank and Sullivan, used the Drake Equation in more a research and technology setting and, even then, could only give a scientific guess. Frank and Sullivan where more interested in figuring out how many advanced civilizations, more or less, have developed in the plan of the universe. The first thing this team did was removed the L (length over which these civilization release detectable communications). After that, they got a little fancy; the developed a form of the Drake Equation for Archaeology use. This equation is A = Nast * fbt. This equation takes a new form but is based off of Drakes work. A is the number of technological elements that have ever developed. Nast is the product of R, Fp and Ne of the Drake Equation. Fbt is the product of Fe, Fi and Fc of the Drake Equation.

What did Adam Frank and Woodruff Sullivan discover? Their analysis and research showed that there is less than 1 in 10 Billion Trillion chance that human civilization evolved on only Earth! Does this mean that there are other life forms out there? Does this mean we really are not alone? What is the next step in Science and the Unexplained?

UFO or Drone

By Stephanie Kelly

It would appear, from reports, that many people are seeing more unexplained flying objects all around the world. One possibility that has been brought up often is that of Drones or other Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. Could this uptick in UFO sightings actually be related to the private and professional use of this type of equipment? Drones have become rather commonplace in many areas ranging from a novice who just likes the ability to record a family outing or gathering to them being used by the Military, Law Enforcement and Movie Studios. With Drones being a rather new piece of equipment, it is important to understand what a drone is, what they can do and what they may look like in the sky.
Drones, also referred to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), are basically flying robots. Most personally owned Drones are flown using a controller by a person on the ground. Commercially owned and Military controlled Drones are known to fly using GPS through software embedded in their systems, thus, no person is required to be within a certain range as it flies. Most normal citizens, in the United States, can’t fly their drone more than 400 feet above the ground by law but Drones have been recorded as high as 3,950 meters above sea level. It is possible for people to get clearance to fly their drone above 400 feet depending on location, weather, insurance and expertise. Most of the military and commercial use of Drones is classified as UAV flight or RPAS, remotely piloted aerial systems, flights. These RPAS and UAVs are made from much higher and longer flights, more than 60,000 feet high for extended time periods.
Now, let’s say you are peering up at the sky after the sun has set and see odd lights in the sky. Drones are also known to have multiple light patterns and colors available, most of which can be adjusted or altered at the flick of a switch or push of a button. The most common light set up for a drone would be 4 lights, typically white or blue, located on the bottom of the craft. Circular drones are known to have lights all the way around. RPAS can have lights that are white, blue, red or green and all them can be operated individually or shut off for surveillance purposes. Just because these shapes, patterns or colors are the norm doesn’t mean they can’t be altered or personalized, most can be completely redone at the owner’s desire.
The next time you see something in the sky, before jumping to the unexplained, try comparing them to known Drone images. You would be surprised at how many different types of UAV’s and different color patterns are available for purchase.

Skunk Ape

Skunk Ape
By: Jessica Stacey-Miller

The Skunk Ape is a bipedal humanoid reported to live in the South Eastern United States. There are reports of sightings in Arkansas and North Carolina but the majority of reports are from the Florida Everglades. The ape is possibly a Bigfoot and described as having reddish brown to black fur, red glowing eyes and an incredibly horrid smell like rotting, rancid food. Estimates of the creature’s height vary significantly, some as small as four feet up to ten feet tall. The ape has several known names: Swamp Cabbage Man, The Nico, Swamp Ape, Stink Ape, Florida Bigfoot, Myakka Skunk Ape, Swampsquatch and the Bardin Booger.

Reports of the Skunk Ape started in 1942 when a man claimed that one of the creatures hitched a ride on his running board for over half a mile. In 1997 foreign tourists traveling on a bus claimed to have seen the creature. That same year a naturalist working in the Everglades also reported seeing the creature and described it as being over 7 feet tall. In 2000 pictures of the Skunk Ape were sent to the police along with a letter from an anonymous elderly woman. The letter stated that a large ape had been entering her back yard and stealing apples and lemons over the course of 3 nights. Her husband believed it looked like an orangutan and complained the horrible smell lasted long after it left.

Joe Nickell is a skeptical researcher who has been researching the claims and reports of the Skunk Ape and believes many of the sightings are actually hoaxes or possible misidentification of other wildlife animals such as bears. The black bear has many of the characteristics that have been reported. The rancid smell could be explained by the logic that bears often scavenge for food in garbage bins and they also eat other animals. A large bear can reach around seven feet tall when standing on their hind legs. The National Park Service classifies the Skunk Ape to be a hoax as there has been no concrete evidence to suggest its existence. This has not stopped reports however and many sightings still continue to this day.

Dave Shealy claims to have seen the skunk ape in 1974 at the age of ten. He continued to search for the creature for many years, seeing him on three other occasions. He is the self proclaimed local expert and has even made TV appearances. On July 8, 2000 Shealy captured a video of the Skunk Ape. Though there have not been any verified claims and National Park Services has stated the Skunk Ape is a hoax, Shealy responds by stating the swamp is over 2.2 million acres and one of the largest areas of protected land which is rarely visited.

What do you think? Is the Skunk Ape a case of mistaken animal identity? A hoax? Or is the Skunk Ape real?

The Lady of the Spiked Throne

The Lady of the Spiked Throne

By: Stephanie Kelly

In 2009, Archaeologist Massimo Vidale was invited to examine an artifact that is currently held in a private collection. This items has been named ‘The Lady of the Spiked Throne’ due to the fact that it appears to be a Queen or Lady of importance on a Throne of spikes. Vidale was so intrigued with this item that he extensively studied it with all available resources that were at his disposal. He took an amazing amounts of detailed photos and produced articles concerning the study and findings of this item. Even with this detailed and scientific research there still has not been an explanation for this item.

To most people this just appears as a man made carving of multiple people in a cow, or bull, shaped boat and a King or Queen on a throne. To a well trained eye it is much more though. Vidale and his team all agreed that this item was in the shape of a boat or, more likely, a chariot and does appear to have a bull’s head at the front of it. Inside this chariot are at least 15 figures that were once painted yellow, red, and black. The figures that are believed to be men appear to be wearing a cone shaped garment or adornment on their necks and heads. The other figures that do not have these adornments are believed to be women and seem to be placed in the more powerful positions such as the end and beginning of each row. Under the canopy of the vessel is a woman on a throne. What is odd about this throne is that it appears to have spikes all around it, this is why it is referred to as ‘The Lady of the Spiked Throne.’

Massimo Vidale insists that this is a true and authentic clay artifact dating back to around 2700 BC and resembles that of the Mehrgarh and Naushahro civilizations that were found in Pakistan, Afghanistan and eastern Iran. He also believed that this was one of many artifacts that had been smuggled out of the war-torn area in the past decade. Vidale also offered thermoluminescence tests that appear to confirm that this is authentic and not a recreation.

Mr. Vidale’s theory on this object is that the chariot or vessel was meant to represent an event such as a ceremony or ritual that was to be held, or had been held, by the community that created it. He also notes that the placement and appearance of the figures in the boat are an example of the common hierarchy in most civilizations at that time and it would appear that, as you view the figures, the farther back you view, the more detail and time was put into the items. To help back up the dating of the piece, he notes that the feminine figures would fit with the typical ideology of the early societies in that time frame and probable location this artifact was discovered in.

There are still many questions concerning the Lady of the Spiked Throne and it is not clear if any more examinations will be allowed on it. Hopefully, with time, more information will come out or be made available about this amazing item. Until then, we are left with multiple questions: Where did it come from? What group or tribe created it? What does it represent?

Ulf Christiernsson’s sighting

Ulf Christiernsson’s sighting

By Stephanie Kelly

On the 1st of April 1954, The CIA sent out a report concerning a sighting in Sweden that was reported 3 times in newspaper articles. The articles were published in the Stockholm daily newspaper ‘Dagens Nyheter’ on the 18th, 19th and 20th of December 1953. Of all of the reports that I have gone through, this one is a little different. The first thing that caught my attention was the amount of redaction; the majority of released reports have no redaction but this one seem to have odd reaction such as “Please return to Agency Archives, ******, making it unclear exactly what agency controlled this information. Secondly, all of the other reports I have reviewed have the Classification and markings for whom the information was given to; this report has the Classification redacted and, on the only page with the grid viewable, has no one marked for other Government departments that were involved.

Ulf Christiernsson, a retired Captain with the Royal Air Force and at the time an employee of Transair, reported that on December 17, 1953 he saw a metallic round object, approximately 10 meters in diameter, in the sky while flying in a DC-3 with his flight mechanic Olle Johansson. He also stated “The mysterious object appeared suddenly on the air route traveled by all controlled air traffic between Bulltofta and Bromma airfields.” He gave, in great detail the events of that afternoon. He was positive that it was flying at a low altitude and it approached his aircraft at a “very high velocity” and what he estimated as “about that of sound.”

Captain Christiernsson estimated that the aircraft was in his view for a 5 second time span. He said in the article that it didn’t seem to have a crew and was nothing like anything he had ever seen more; seeming more robotically controlled than by a person. At the time of the sighting, Captain Christiernsson stated “we were flying at an altitude of 2,150 meters and the cloud ceiling was about 1,500 meters. Thus, the object should have been flying at an altitude of between 1,500 and 1,600 meters.” Both, Christiernsson and Johansson both agreed it had no exhaust or vapor trail following behind it.

Of course, Captain Christiernsson reported this immediately to the Air Defense Staff. Their statement on the incident makes this even more interesting. According to their release, at about 2:47 pm and unknown object was reportedly seen traveling at high speed and because of the low clouds it was not able to be seen from the ground. They also stated that, to their knowledge, there were no Swedish planes in the area that this occurred.

Of course the Defense Department in Sweden along with the Air Department there were working to solve this mystery but they were not able to come up with any exact answer. One Scientist, Bertil Lindblad, insists that the sighting was that of Geminids, a large group of meteors. Mr. Lindblad stated that these would of been visible mainly on Dec 13th but sightings could last for days. Research helped to lessen the possibility of this being the cause do to the speed and angle of what the Captain saw.

Many other explanations have been offered for this sighting, but it appears to be one sighting, by a credible witness, that has yet to be debunked! This sighting is a mystery and may always be.

Południca – Lady Midday

Południca – Lady Midday
By:  Christopher M. Ostrowski
Demonology Team Chair

As a little boy, I remember my Polish Uncle and our Polish neighbors taking about Południca, on very hot days in the summer. They warn me about being out in the Hot Sun. That “Lady Midday” would “come and get me.”

The Lady of the Rye
Lady Midday is a Slavic noon-demon. Which is why, I see now, that my Great Grandmother would make me take a nap during the hottest parts of a summer’s Day. It is believed that She causes sunstroke and madness in fieldworkers. It is believed that, noon in the summer, is at the height of her power. The demon goes by many names, Poluudnica, Psezpolnica, Polednice, Polednica, Poludnitsa, Lady Midday Kornwyf and Pscipolnitsa, Lady of the Rye. She is reported to wear a white dress, carrying a scythe or shears, and can appear as a young girl, beautiful woman, or a an aged crone, whatever Her desire is at that moment. The Mythology tells that She would stop people as they walked through the countryside’s fields or while they were working. She would ask them difficult questions/riddles or perhaps simply engage them in conversation. This in itself is pretty harmless, right? Well, it seems that if she didn’t like your answer, or you failed to answer her question, or if they attempted to change the subject, the Lady Midday would cut off their head, or alternately, strike them with madness.
Slavic artists portrayed Lady Midday as a young woman dressed in white, roaming around the edges of crop fields. She would be shown carrying a scythe or a pair of large shears in her hands. The Field Worker, however, could see Lady Midday as she approached. They stated that She took the form of a dust cloud before becoming corporeal.

Południca, if nothing else is a useful tool in teaching farm workers about the dangers of the noon heat. What better reason to tell your Boss that you need to take a break?

She was also quite useful at scaring away small children who might be up to trouble around valuable crops.

The Codex Gigas

The Codex Gigas
By Sara Fawley

The Codex Gigas (which translates from Latin to Giant Book) is the largest known manuscript in the world. It measures approximately 1 metre (3 feet 3/8 inch) in length and takes two people to lift. It took more than 160 animal skins to make. This manuscript also known as ‘The Devil’s Bible’ , due to a full page illustration of the Devil contained in it’s pages, is also one of the strangest works in history. It was written in Latin in the 13th century AD and while it’s exact origin is unknown there is a note in the manuscript that states it was pawned in the monestary at Sedlec by it owners, the monks of Podlazice. According to experts it would take one person working 24 hours a day 5 years to recreate everything in the Codex, excluding the illustrations. So realistically it would have taken whoever wrote it about 20 years to complete. The strange thing is that the writing is completely consistent all the way through from start to finish. It does not change at all as one would think would happen over such an extended periord of years.

So what is it that makes the Codex Gigas so strange? It is a strange compilation of works by different authors. It begins with the Old Testament of the Bible which is followed by ‘The Antiquities’ and ‘The Jewish War’, two historical works by Flavius Josephus. Josephus lived in the first century AD. Next is the ‘Encyclopedia Etymologiae’ by Isidore of Seville who lived in the 6th century AD. Following this is a collection of medical works from various authors including Hippocrates and Theophilus. After this is the New Testament of the Bible. The last of the long works contained in the book is a ‘Chronicle Of Bohemia’ by Cosmas from Prague who lived in the 12th century.

There also some short texts as well as illustrations in the book. The first short text is a work on pentinence which is followed by an illustration of the Heavenly City. Following the portrait of the Devil is a work on exorcising evil spirits. The last short text is a Celendar which contains the names and dates on which saints and local Behmian persons were commemorated. There is also one lost work, ‘The Rule of St Benedict’, a 6th century guide to monastic life, which was on pages that were cut out of the book.

There is a legend behind the book which says it was created in one day by a monk who was sentenced to death. The legend states that the monk completed the manuscript in one night with the help of the Devil. The origin of the legend is unknown. Another legend states that it brings illness and disaster to any who possess it. Since it has been in the National Libray of Stockholm for centuries I think we can dismiss this particular legend.

The Codex was pawned at the monastery at Sedlec in 1295, by the monks of Podlazice. It then found it’s way to the monasery of Brevnov ne Prague. All of these monasteries were in Bohemia which is now part of the Czech Republic. In 1594 Rudolf II took the Codex Gigas to his castle in Prague where it remained until it was taken by the army of Sweden during the Thirty Years War. The book along with many other treasures were entered into the collection of Queen Christina of Sweden and placed in the royal library at the castle in Stockholm. In 1877 the book was taken to the newly built National Libray of Sweden in Stockholm where it remains today.

So who wrote the Codex Gigas and to what purpose? Although the who will probably never be known there is a reasonable theory on the why.The Codex Gigas is thought to be a compilation of things important to Bohemia. The Bible is the most important book to Christianity. The other texts were thought to have been carefully chosen to accomany it because together they provided information about all of the important things, Jewish History, universal knowledge, medicine and local history.

Pagan Celtic Celebration of Beltane

By: Christopher “Lobo” Ostrowski
Demonology Team Chair

Today is April 30*. Starting tonight at Sundown is the Pagan Celtic Celebration of Beltane. Imagine, centuries ago. The Fires of Bel would be light on the Mountain sides throughout the Celtic region of the World. The local tribes would pick a May Queen to symbolize the Goddess. She would choose a Male to represent the God that the Goddess gave birth to at the Winter Solstice. They would go off into to the woods to celebrate their Union.

Beltane’s fires also mark the bright half of the year. Since it lies in the northern hemisphere, we consider it spring. Actually it marks the start of summer whose middle point will be celebrated at “Midsummer” in June.

Other names for Beltane include: May Day, Cetsamhain, The ‘opposite Samhain’, Walpurgisnacht (in Germany), and Roodmas (the medieval Church’s name). This last came from Church Fathers who were hoping to shift the common people’s allegiance from the Maypole (Pagan lingam – symbol of life) to the Holy Rood (the Cross – Roman instrument of death)….

A good portion of ancient Celtic magic is sympathetic. This means that all actions were performed to simulate the desired result.

The Maypole is an important aspect of the Celebrations. It is the Symbol of the God. The Maypole dance was an important aspect of encouraging the return of fertility to the earth. As people passionately dance around and around the pole holding the brightly colored ribbons, the energy it raises is sent down into the earth’s womb, bringing about Her full awakening and fruitfulness
May was also the time to encourage crops, animals, and people to grow and reproduce abundantly. Unions among unmarried partners were a way to encourage this result, but it was considered unlucky to marry at this time of disorder
May is not the month to marry. May is the Goddess and God’s handfasting month, all honor would be Hers and His…

When the Romans invaded Western Europe and Britain, much of the symbolism and rites of the Floralia and Beltane became comingled. It became the holiday we now call May Day or Walpurgis. The custom of going ‘a-Maying’, which is collecting flowers, greenery and the maypole early on the morning of May 1, survives to this day. The lighting of Bel fires in Britain, Germany and other countries of Europe, also remains intact. The sexual aspect of the holiday, however sadly, has become almost extinct in many countries. The festivities became viewed as sinful by some Christian leaders, and in 1644 the celebration was banned by the Puritan-controlled Parliament in Britain….

Beltane, just like its counterpart Samhain, divides the year into its two primary seasons, Winter and Summer. As Samhain is about honoring Death, Beltane is about bringing forth Life. It is the time when the sun is fully released from his bondage of winter.
Beltane, also like Samhain, is a time of “No -Time”. “No-Time” is an in-between time, when the veils between the two worlds are at their thinnest. “No- Time” is when the two worlds can intermingle. It is when the strongest Magic can be performed. It is the time when the Faeries return from their winter respite.

On the night before Beltane, people would place rowan branches at their windows and doors for protection, many otherworldly occurrences could transpire during this time of “No-Time”.

* Although Beltane is now usually celebrated from sundown April 30th to sundown on the first of May, it should be noted that in earlier times, before the calendar changes of 1752, all dates year-round would have come some days later — precious extra days, in springtide especially, during which time the hawthorn (“mayflower”) and many more trees and flowers would have begun blooming.

Marbas

Marbas

Marbas is a Demon that is classified as a President of Hell. He commands 36 Legions, a Legion is 3,000-6,000 strong, of Demons. Is a Demon that is Patron to Craftsman and Healers alike. He teaches mechanics or the machine as well as the body. It is also said that He can show Man how to Shapeshift.

He is believed to have taught men to forge steel for weapons. This has brought comparisons to him and Tubal Cane of Biblical and Hephaestus/Vulcan of Greek and Roman myths.

He has taught men to Heal well as curse. Is brutally honest when asked if a person can be cured or not. This makes him compared to Apollo and The Archangel Michael.

In Marbas we see a Duality of Healing and Destruction. The Creation of Metalwork and Tradesman for Farming tools as well as weapons of War. The Ability to Heal and to Curse are common practices of the Shaman and Herbalists all over the world. “The difference between Medicine and Poison, is the dosage.”
Marbas (sometimes called Barbas) appears to the Practitioner as man with the head of a Lion. Peaks in powerful, yet pleasant voice. He will also alter his appearance if the Practitioner finds it too intimidating.
I think Marbas shows us just how Free Will comes into play. He is a giver of knowledge that can be used to Hurt or Heal. It is our choice on how we use this knowledge

Originally a private home built in 1885, it was expanded and was called the Kindred Inn, named for its owner and was a popular beach resort. Today the hotel offers turn of the century décor with the rooms on the second floor.
“Charlie,” a Chinese immigrant who allegedly ended up suffocated in a hiding place by the fireplace, is the resident ghost. Since the early 1900s, he is said to wander through the hotel and restaurant. There is also a ghost cat on the premises. Reports suggest that Room 7 may be the most active. The owner, Scott White, has been featured in the media talking about this haunted locale.

Northern State Mental Hospital

Northern State Mental Hospital (also known as Northern State Hospital for the Insane and Northern State Hospital for the Criminally Insane)
Sedro-Woolley, Washington State
By: Lillee Allee

Northern State Mental Hospital, near Sedro-Woolley, was built in 1912 due to the overcrowding at the two asylums in the region. This cottage plan was designed so the institution could be be self-sufficient and to offer therapeutic work for the patients. The first homicide of one patient by another offered in February 1922.Throughout its history, the actual diagnoses were questionable as patients were placed in the hospital by well-meaning and perhaps not so well-meaning family members. Deaths occurred due to such reasons as excessive labor, electroshock therapy, and lobotomies. Though many felt that the name “the Bughouse” as it was locally known was a derogative term, Bugtown was actually the name of the area before the asylum was ever built. By the 1950s, the facility housed 2,700 residents, which was its full capacity. The hospital was closed in 1973. There were 1,500 unmarked burials in cemetery, and at its closing, 204 containers of cremated remains were found in the morgue. These were later buried in Mount Vernon at the Hawthorne Cemetery.

Part of the complex is used as a Job Corps office and a drug treatment center. Some of the building have been torn down or condemned so trespassing would be a dangerous as well as illegal behavior.

Hauntings reportedly include a little girl playing with a ball, a man who seems to follow her, and a nurse who is pushing a male patient in a wheelchair. In 2006, a paranormal group got permission to investigate and caught some compelling evidence on film.

VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY

VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY

Address: 800 Lancaster Ave, Villanova, PA 19085

There are said to be three haunted sites on the campus of Villanova University: Alumni Hall, St. Mary’s Hall and The Dundale Mansion

THE DUNDALE MANSION

Is probably the tamest of the 3. It is said that, friendly ghosts are there. There are some who like to turn lights on and off. Or call residents and faculty by name. Staff and faculty have reported hearing a woman’s voice call them between 5:15 and 5:30 a.m.

ALUMNI HALL

The college housed patients at Alumni Hall during the Civil War and World War I The ghosts of former patients who were treated are said to roam the rooms there Besides the abnormal creaks in the floors and walls when no one is nearby. In addition footsteps can be heard at all times of the night when there is no one in the vicinity.
At least four known students have complained about waking up in the middle of the night and being ‘held’ by some force. Although this can be explained away as a form of Sleep Paralysis, it adds to the legend. This is said to have lasted a period of roughly 5 minutes when, abruptly it stopped and everyone was free to move again.
There is also an instance where three counselors and a teenage camper all claim to have heard a woman’s voice call their respective names at around between 3:15 and 3:30 AM. This is strange compared to the one at Dundale Mansion that is heard at 5:15 and 5:30 AM.
A good deal of the instances happened when there was no one there, during the off season or breaks. Counselors have been threatened that they would be fired if they tell any of the students.

ST. MARY’S HALL

Like Alumni Hall, St. Mary’s Hall is rumored to be haunted. However, the story behind the haunting of St. Mary’s is more of a Shakespearean Tragedy.
He was a priest and she was a nun. Their love was doomed before it could have even blossomed. Both had taken the vow of celibacy, but the heart wants what the heart wants, right?
The affair was short-lived. The Nun was so overwhelmed by the shame of her sin, that she took her own life. They say she hanged herself somewhere in St. Mary’s Hall. Some say she killed herself in the basement, while others insist it was in the chapel. In my opinion, the Chapel would make the most sense. This would Spiritually explain why her spirit is not at rest. Being that both a Suicide and a broken vow are Mortal Sins.

Several janitors also have reported hearing what sounds of water splashing from someone swimming in the St. Mary’s pool at all hours of the night. Of course when they have entered the Pool area, the water is still and no one is there. This has happened on more than one occasion.

Security Guards have heard the sounds of a piano being played. Also, they have heard banging and noise coming from the kitchen. Again, these all happen when it is Off Season and no students are present.

Mirror Magick – The Art of Scrying with Mirrors in the Occult

Mirror Magick – The Art of Scrying with Mirrors in the Occult
By: Tamara Ortiz

Scry – means to foretell the future using a crystal ball or other reflective surface such as a mirror. The origin of this word comes from the early 16th century, the shortening of the word “descry” meaning to catch sight.

Since the beginning of time man has been fascinated by the reflection looking back at him when gazing into a reflective object. Such as water, glass, metal, polished stones, crystals and much more. This fascination has sparked a wide verity of superstitions, myths and legends surrounding the power of mirrors. Mirror Magick can be traced all the way back to ancient times. Since ancient times mirrors are believed to be portals to unseen worlds. Depending on your background and belief system, mirrors can be used for many different reasons, rituals and spells in Occult practices.

Mirror Magick in Ancient Rome

One superstition that is well known is the breaking of a mirror will give you seven years bad luck. This superstition derives form Roman times. Romans believed that the life/soul renewed itself every seven years. Therefore the individual looking into the mirror when it was broken will experience difficulty renewing its life/soul. There were many rituals created to counteract the seven year curse of bad luck. Some Romans believe by immersing the broken pieces in a south flowing stream for seven hours will break the curse. While others believe that by grinding all the pieces into a fine dust will stop the seven year curse of bad luck from taking effect. The individuals that would perform these rituals to offset the curse of the broken mirror were called Specularii. (Sanofsky, 2012)

Mirror Magick in Ancient Japan

The mirror known as Himiko’s Mirror, was discovered in the tomb of Higashinomiya in Aichi, Japan. This very powerful mirror belonged to “Sankakubuchi Shinjukyo,” the Shaman Queen who ruled the kingdom of Yamatai in the 3rd century AD. This mirror is believed to be one of 100 bronze mirrors that where given to the Queen by a Chinese emperor. Mirrors where considered to be a very valued and powerful gifts during these times, for they were used for conducting rituals for divination. These rituals were taken very seriously, for they provide answers to the Shaman Queen regarding her army, financial status, and the empire as a whole. (The Magic Mirror of the Shaman Queen, 2015)

Mirror Magick in Ancient Italy

In medieval times ladies of virtue were said to where a small mirror made of brass, silver or zinc attached to their person. This would ward of negative energy and was said to keep the women pure. Not only was this a common belief among women in Italy but this same practice can also be found in Egyptian and Greek cultures as well. (Cabus, 2012)

Superstitions of Mirrors

While researching some of the points shared in this article I came across many different superstitions about mirrors and the powers found within them. I found this to be interesting because these beliefs didn’t come from practitioners of the occult. These beliefs come from many different individuals with a variety of backgrounds and religious beliefs. So dare I say it…we all have a bit of magick in us. Below is a list of these beliefs some positive and some negative.

• If a new couple first catches sight of each other in a mirror, they will have a happy marriage.
• To see an image of her future husband, a girl was told to eat an apple while sitting in front of a mirror, and then brush her hair. While doing so, an image of the man would appear behind her shoulder.
• If you feel sorrowful or troubled while home alone, with no one to talk to and no apparent way to control your depression, stand before a mirror and gaze into your eyes. Your anxiety should disappear.
• Ancient Chinese believed that mirrors frightened away evil spirits who were scared by their own appearance. If the mirror was broken, the protection was lost.
• If a mirror falls and breaks by itself, someone in the house will soon die.
• Someone seeing their reflection in a room where someone has recently died will soon die themselves.
• Ideally, no mirror should be hung so low that it “cuts off” the tallest household member’s head (doing so may cause headaches).

My Mirror Magick

The truth is I can go on forever about mirror magick in many different cultures and rituals found all over the world. Mirror Scrying is a deep rooted practice done by many. I personally use my mirror and include it in many rituals when performing as a practitioner. For many in the occult but not all, the mirror is tied to the moon and water. This is because the moon reflects the suns energy combining them and becoming a very powerful source of energy for the practitioner when conducting rituals. The representation of water is because of the purity and cleansing properties it has. When combining such energies as the sun, the moon and water, this is believed to give the practitioner the ability to call on or use a specific spirits or energies through the portal that is the mirror. There are many different mirrors that be used but the ideal mirror would be round and frameless.

My mirror that I use is rectangular and belongs to my alter table. My alter table and mirror are extremely important tools to me. I have included pictures so what I am about to explain will makes sense when viewing them. My alter table is a half circle glass table that sits against the wall with the mirror mounted just above it. I have done this because when gazing into the mirror performing my rituals my circle is completed in the reflection of the mirror on the other side, realm or portal, to me this pulls both realms together when I am conducting rituals. As you can see in one of the pictures I also write different occult symbols and languages on my mirror depending on the ritual I am performing.

Mirror magick is a very ancient belief and one that can be found all over the world. It can make you ponder many questions when learning about mirror magick. For discovering how many people from so many walks of life and belief systems have something to say about mirror magick. So is it true? Do mirrors possess the power to connect with the other side and the realms found with them? Will they give us the answers we seek when gazing into them? Many believe so!

The Moon and the Occult

Hello Paranormal Seekers,
The Moon and the Occult
By: Tamara Ortiz

The moon has played a role in the occult going back over 4000 BC, starting with the Sumerians who worshiped the Moon (Nanna). The moon god of Egypt was known as Khonsu (Khons, Chons, Khensu) His cult center was at Thebes where he was part of a triad with Amun and Mut. He was one of the companions of Thoth (who was also associated with the moon and the measurement of time). The moon hasn’t always played as powerful a role in the occult for many thousands of years.

In the Occult and in Alchemy whether the moon is male energy or female energy, it is seen as having great energy. Practitioners will spend time predicting what effects of that energy will unfold depending on placement and fullness of the moon. Many practitioners will observe the night sky during certain times of the year depending on date and astrological alignments. The position of the Moon relative to the other signs is seen as being of great importance. This information is important because certain rituals and rites will be conducted by the practitioner during these times.

Mano Cornuto (Horned Hand)

Hello Paranormal Seekers,
Mano Cornuto (Horned Hand)
By: Tamara Ortiz

Mano Cornuto, meaning horned hand in Italian. The horned hand is usually associated with the Wiccan traditions representing the Horned God or as the horns of the Moon Goddess. This symbol is used in the Occult as a charm or symbol to protect against the evil eye, similar to the hand of Hamsa (Arabic) and the hand of Hamesh (Hebrew). It is unclear in history if the Horned Hand symbol originated as an image of ‘horns’ or as a “poking out the evil eye” gesture. It is common belief in today’s day and age, although untrue that the Horned Hand is a representation of the devil or stands for some uncommon evil unseen force. This is so very untrue. It wasn’t until the late 70’s and early 80’s is when this symbol started to be utilized by heavy metal bands, furthermore associating the symbol with negativity and such things as the devil.

Even Salt can look like sugar, or sugar like salt but they taste completely different.

I bring up this analogy and this symbol today because the trends I have seen recently. When it comes to such things as the paranormal, please remember to do you due diligence in research, education and investigating.

Ouroboros

Hello Paranormal Seekers…
The Occult department would like to present to you the Ouroboros!
By: Tamara Ortiz

The Ouroboros is an ancient symbol usually depicted as a serpent or dragon. The symbol originated in Egypt as a representation for the sun although the name originates from within the Greek language “oura” meaning “tail” and “boros” meaning “eating”. Sometimes you will find the Ouroboros symbol represented at a lemniscate (figure eight). The Ouroboros can also have the symbolic representation of coming of full circle, the renewal of life and infinity and represents the cycle of life, rebirth and death. The Ouroboros can be found in many cultures such as the Aztec serpent God Quetzalcoatl and the Chinese alchemical dragons have both similar shapes and meanings. This is because of the serpent’s representation of rebirth by shedding its skin and starting a new. The Ouroboros can be represented very simple or a very intricate design. Mojo Bags and Amulets in the Occult

Hello Paranormal Seekers,

Mojo Bags and Amulets in the Occult
By Tamara Ortiz

Mojo bags and amulets are tools used and created often in Occult practices for a variety of purposes. They will be utilized by the practitioner or given to another person. They come in many different forms and containers depending on the practitioners need. The construction and rituals/rites associated with the mojo bag or amulet will vary widely based on the practitioner’s personal and religious viewpoints.

The origins of the mojo bag can be traced to the Congo regions of Africa (from the word moyo, meaning soul or life force.) The practices of the mojo bag migrated to the southern regions of the United States with African American slaves in the early 1600s. The mojo bag can be found in multiple cultures, occult practices and can have both a negative or positive influence depending on the purpose it was created. In the Haitian culture, mojo bags are believed to have the energy for which it was created for, whereas in Creole cultures the mojo bag is thought to be a symbol of black magic and will harm anyone it is given to or placed upon.
Although I have chosen to pin point the Mojo Bag in this discussion, the idea of adding annotated, blessed and or smudged items and herbs into a container stretches across many different practices and throughout history. A spell/charm bag, pray bag, conjure bag, trick bag, root bag, toby and gris-gris bag just to name a few are all forms of mojo bags in a way, just different perspectives.

Mojo bags are typically made with soft red woven fabric and a drawstring in origin but with color and material of the container playing a role in the symbolism of different, energies, deities, elements and things of this nature. They can be made of many different materials such as silk, leather, metal, wood and or glass, but remember the container is part of the spell more often than not. Items found within and used to create the mojo are stones, crystals, fossils, feathers, pieces of wood, nuts, shells, dried flowers or other herbs and seeds, just to name a few. The look and feel of the mojo will vary from practitioner to practitioner.
How to create Mojo or Charm/Spell bag:

I must reiterate that these are not a set in stone, list of rules. As you become more educated and diverse in the knowledge of the Occult as a practitioner, you will have the opportunity to explore, learn, consider, hypothesize and ultimately decide how you want to create your own.

1. It is created on the cardinal points, or on the point of a specific spirit depending on the need.
2. Color of the bag is important. Choose a color specific to the purpose for what it is being created for.
3. You can put as many items and you desire but remember your going to be channeling the energies of these items, so the more items, the harder it is believed to be to do so.
4. It must be filled with items that are specific to your need or the person it represents.
5. It must be annotated or blessed with a liquid of some kind.
6. Be very careful of the words you speak, words create energy that will become a part of the bag and or amulet.
7. Depending on purpose, you may need to smudge each ingredient or item that will be in the bag or amulet.
8. This step is optional depending on purpose. Use a magical alphabet or a magical symbol/seal drawn on a piece of paper and you will place or sew this into the bag. The type of parchment used can be important so keep this in mind.
9. Words of power and strength are spoken over the bag and or amulet activating the energy.
10. The final act is to breathe on the bag and or amulet to give it life.

My Mojo Bag…The pictures I have included are of a mojo/spell bag I have created for my own personal use. It was created for healing and protection purposes. I will describe the contents and symbolism found within.

The Bag – is blue silk to pull the energies of peace, tranquility and healing. The gold silk embroidery represents the God energy and the silver silk embroidery represents the Goddess energy. The Items inside – necklace with four archangel medallions (Michael for strength and protection, Raphael for healing, Gabriel for purification, and Uriel for peace.) One rose quartz crystal to push out negative energy. Herbs – valerian root, angelica, rose hips and flax seed for healing, protection and grounding. Blessed sea salt for cleansing, grounding, and protection. I used two magical symbols. The Sowilo “soe-we-low” for strength, healing and the suns energy and the Dagaz “theaw-gauze” for healing and the moons energy.

Tree of Life

Tree of Life

By: Tamara Ortiz

Hello Paranormal Seekers,

This post was inspired by a comment from a member on a previous post from the Occult department. She brought up the idea of and the symbol “The Tree of Life” being used in the Occult. Being such a complex symbol, I thought it wise to dive right in.

The Tree of Life is a universal symbol found in many spiritual belief systems including parts of the Occult. The tree of life represents wisdom, protection, strength, bounty, beauty and redemption throughout these beliefs systems. (Catalogs, 2016) I believe one of the factors that make this symbol so meaningful is because the tree is a very powerful symbol within its self. It is the one thing in nature that never stops growing even when it is dying it still continues to grow. In ancient Egypt the tree of life represented the hierarchical chain of events that brought balance between life and death. Buddhist believe that the tree of life is the very tree Buddha sat under while finding enlightenment. Chinese mythology represents the tree of life accompanied by a phoenix and a dragon, the dragon representing immortality and the phoenix representing rebirth. (Symbolic Dictionary , 2016) The most complex system of the tree of life is found in the Kabbalah, It embodies creation, existence and the return to the divine in ten spheres and twenty-two connecting paths. I find the tree of life and its representations across all platforms to be so beautiful and it is such a magical symbol. (Real Wiccan Spells, 2015)
I have decided to talk about this particular symbol because of a members interest but also I have been asked several times on previous post if symbols can be interchangeable, used across multiple platforms. I personally believe so and the tree of life is a perfect representation of this.

A symbol represents little more, and nothing less, than what the bearer chooses to have it represent but this is just my opinion.

What are some of your favorite symbols found within the Occult culture and there history?

What does this symbol mean to you?

Lilith

Lilith

By: Christopher Lobo Ostrowski

So many people have heard the story of Adam and Eve. But, few have learned of Adam’s first wife, Lilith.

In Genesis 2:18, it states that “God Said, ‘It is not good for man to be alone’” According to from Alphabet of Ben Sira (ca 700-1000 CE), “He then created a woman for Adam, from the earth, as He had created Adam himself, and called her Lilith.” There soon grew to fright. Lilith would not take a role or position of submission/subservience to Adam. Lilith believed that because they both were made of the Earth, they are then Equal. But Adam refused to see Her point. So, Lilith raging with anger, cried the “Ineffable (incapable of being expressed or described in word) Name of God” And flew off in the direction of the Red Sea. This left Adam miffed. He cried to “God” that Lilith had left. At once, “God”, sent these three angels to bring her back. She refused and was cursed to The Red Sea.

Some stories also state that Lilith is the mother of Cain, Making him Half Demonic. This making Eve the Mother of Abel. That is the reason “God” rejected his offering. Starting the SECOND biggest fight and first Murder.

Lilith and Samael /Asmodeus:

Yes, this is a two parter. It seems Lilith didn’t say alone long. The Archangel Samael, which later gets a name change to Asmodeus, for no reason, found her walking. Samael and Lilith mated and are to have produced legions of “Unclean Spirits”, (Demons). Some of these Demons were believed to be Incubus and Succubus. It is also believed that if a baby laughs in its near the Sabbath, Lilith is playing with it.
She is also the first of Samael’s four wives. Lilith, Igrath, Naamah and Mahalath, each of them the mother of her own brood of Demons.

During Medieval Times, and in some places today, Lilith and her Daughters are said to “lay with” young men as the sleep. This is said to help produce more Demons.

In The Treatise on the Left Emanation

Lilith and Samael were created at the same time that Adam and Eve were. They were intertwined as was Adam and Eve. They gave birth to Cain and all the Demons.
It is believed that it was Lilith, in the guise of a Serpent, that seduced Eve in the garden of Eden, to eat the Apple. A lot of the medieval iconography show The Serpent in a feminine form.

The Appearance of Lilith

There has been much speculation as to what Lilith looks like. The most come is said to be that of a woman with Red Hair, wings, and talons for feet. There are others that say She is a woman above the waist, a serpent below, red hair, and wings. There is also a report of Lilith being a woman, but with “Fire” below the waist.

Lilith in Modern times

Lilith has gain popularity again as a Strong Feminine Mother/Woman. Always referred to as “Mother” and possessing the Feministic stance. Demanding equality and freedom from the oppression of a Patriarchal system.
In Luciferianism, she is the Consort of Lucifer. Lilith, being the Bride of the Devil, is one part of the Adversary as being the dark instinctual side of man and woman, feminine, yet horrific and loving all within the same Being.

Logan Inn

By: Christopher Rogue Ostrowski

In the town of New Hope, Pa. You will find one of the oldest inns in America; the Logan Inn. It was standing and in operation through the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. So you can just imagine the whole host of Ghost Stories that have been acquired in that time.

From Orbs to a Revolutionary Soldier playing his drum, the stories can keep a good team of investigator busy for weeks.

Accounts totaled the ghosts at 8. But, there is a possibility that there is more. It seems that the most active room is Room 6, also referred to as “Emily’s Room”.

Let’s start with the picture of a couple in the Lobby. People have stated that it gives off the scent of Lavender. Supposedly, this is the favorite fragrance of the woman in the picture. When people get a whiff of it in other sections of the Inn, it is believe that She is near.

Emily is believed to the Mother of a previous owner of the Inn. She is believed to be the reason that a Strange Mist appears in the room. There has also are reports of guests leaving in the night, after seeing a white misty form in the room.

People also have reported seeing two small children in the room, also in a mirror there.

It seems women have a Voyeuristic Ghost of a man also, that has been reported to stand behind them in the bathroom. They have reported seeing him in the mirror. When they turn around, no one is there.
Shenanigans in room 6 don’t end there. People say they have heard the sound of crying, and experienced pillows being jerked from beneath their heads.

Dermot and Grania’s Bed

By: Stephanie Kelly

Dermot and Grania’s Bed, also known as Dunnamore, is a megalith located in Cookstown, County of Tyrone, Northern Ireland. This megalith appears to be made up of at least 6 slabs. All of these slabs range in height and width with the largest single stone being approximately 26 feet long.
This megalith was first documented, though briefly, by men of the names Westropp, Borlase and De Valera. In Westropp’s review of the site it appears that he believes it to be nothing more that a split rock. He appeared to be very set in his thinking that Dermot and Grania’s Bed was nothing more than a natural rock formation. Borlase appears to be unsure exactly what this stone formation is and only mentions its existence without giving a cause for it. De Valera and an associate take a difference stance. They stated that the site could be a “roughly built megalithic tomb” but also note that Westropp’s thought of it being a split rock was preferred.
Dunnamore is one of many megaliths that seem to still be a mystery. It does appears that this site has not had much excavation or research done to help determine its place in history. Many feel that this stone formations could date back to the Bronze Age though excavation and research have not been done to accurate date Dunnamore using today’s scientific testing.

The Ghosts of Carlisle Barracks

By: Christopher Rogue Ostrowski

Carlisle Barracks is located in the Cumberland Valley in Pennsylvania. It is considered one of the best military schools in the world.
Of its Graduates: John J. Pershing, Dwight D. Eisenhower and Omar N. Bradley are the top three recognized

Originally, a spot were early traders and settlers stopped to rest before they made their way across the Allegheny Mountains. It was made a Military post in 1757.
George Washington had visited the area during the Revolutionary War. He wanted it to the spot for the New Military Academy. But it lost out to West Point
The Post did serve as the U.S. Army Mounted Cavalry Training Area in the 1830’s
During the Civil War Union troops occupied both the post and the town of Carlisle. Major General J.E.B. Stuart a Confederate soldier demanded the post and the town surrender, when they didn’t he shelled both and set fire to the post.
In 1879, Carlisle Barracks became the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. Its most famous student and the best athlete was Jim Thorpe.
At the onset of World War l the Barracks was returned to the War Department. It became a hospital that specialized in the treatment of mental rehabilitation for those suffering from the newly identified trauma–called “Shell Shock”.
By the 1920s the Medical Field Service took over the Barracks.
In 1951, the U.S. Army War College relocated to Carlisle and to this day prepares senior officers for high command.
The Barracks assorted history has left the Barracks haunted by a plethora of ghosts. Some say Jim Thorpe can be seen in the Gym. Along with sounds of shuffling sneakers Many confounded Visitors hear faint 20’s and 30’s music from the Bandstand. When this music is heard it is often played off key so it felt that this was probably a young student band from the school preforming a concert.

At the Letort View Community Center, other ghosts can be seen including a well-dressed female student and a man dressed in farm attire. The cellar of this building is so active it has been dubbed, “Purgatory”.

Some of the ghostly activity reflects to the Revolutionary War. At Carlisle there is a building that was originally used as a powder magazine. Today this building is used as a museum that houses a variety of military artifacts.
It is believed that the Hessian soldiers who were forced to construct it in 1777 still haunt it.

Samael

By: Christopher Rogue Ostrowski

Samael is an Archangel that is a very complex Angelic character. His name means “the venom of God,” and is believed, by some to the “Satan” in the Bible. He is mentioned in the Talmud as accuser, seducer, and destroyer who slays humans with a single drop of poison.
Samael also is said to have planted the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil in the Garden of Eden This is where He also crosses paths with Lilith, the original Wife of Adam, according to the Jewish faith. He is said even to have possessed the serpent to tempt Eve. According to the Book of Enoch, which is not recognized by the Christian Faith, he taught humans Magic and was directly involved in the Angelic miscegenation that produced the Nephilim. Believed to be the race of ½ man and ½ angel that “God” tried to erase with the “Great Flood”.
Samael, like Azrael The Archangel of Death, has Twelve wings, and also holds full Archangelic status. Samael has the function of bringing Evil misfortunes and punishments upon Humankind, in God’s behalf. Yes, you read that right. There is a reason for misfortune. We can see, as it is stated in Isaiah 45:4-7, “God is the Source of all.” Even though this work depicted him as being one of the most wicked angels, he is nevertheless said to be an angel in the service of the Lord.

The Zohar* associates Lilith and Samael when speaking of the quaternion marriage. The quaternion marriage involved two couples; God and Shekina** above and Samael and Lilith below. But it is alleged that following the destruction of the temple that Shekina descended to be with her flock or people while her handmaiden Lilith ascended to become the consort of God, thus showing her importance.

Central Catholic High School

Central Catholic High School
By: Christopher Rogue Ostrowski
William H. Luden was the famous developer of the menthol cough drop and founder of the Luden’s company, which is also known for the original “5th Ave. Chocolate Bar”.
Luden launched a backroom candy business in 1879 in the rear of his father’s jewelry shop at 35 N. 5th St., Reading, Pennsylvania;
Luden built two mansions, one on 5th Street in Reading Pa., and one at1400 Hill Rd, Reading, PA. The latter called Bon-Air.
Luden sold the mansion to the Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia in 1939. It was turned into a Catholic High School. It welcomed its first students in 1940. An expansion the following year, roughly doubling its size, linked the mansion with its carriage house.
The doors may have closed on Central Catholic High School in 2011, the ghost stories that have spun out of the former Luden Mansion on Hill Road, may never stop operating.
The hauntings of the stately structure range from the natural deaths of Luden family members to a report of the suicide of one of William H. Luden’s sons.
Built over an old iron mine, the home he called Bon Air was a spectacular residence with a ballroom, bowling alley and a total of 33 rooms, including servants’ quarters on the third level. There were tunnels and nooks beneath the building.
Seated above what is now “City Park”, the mansion’s western side of the estate gave the Luden family a large view of the city.
And it is said that on that porch, one of William Luden’s sons hanged himself
The tales of death there have taken lives of their own. Stories of murders and mayhem have in numerous websites, in Urban Legends on the streets of Reading and in the stomping and shouting of upstart paranormal groups, which clumsily parade floor to floor.
Staffers have told stories of Temperature fluctuations, Papers being turned slowly on desks. “Things” that are walking around after hours. BUT, because of fear of repercussion, no one will allow a name or Title to be used. This hurts, of course, credibility

The Quaker church

The Quaker church

BY: Christopher Rogue Ostrowski

on Quaker Church Road in Perryopolis Pa., contains multiple different ghost stories. Now Quaker Church was founded by none other than a bunch of Quakers in the 1700’s. It was a sight where they killed supposed witches and where others practiced black magic later. The hellhound that haunts the church is just one legend.

Supposedly, past investigators have talk to people that have driven or walked past the church. One even stated that he hit a big black dog and it rolled up his hood and over his car. The dog got up and started chasing the car, It is stated that the Dog kept up with the car. But, once he cleared the church it had disappeared.

There are many more “Legends” about this once, a Quaker Church. One is that inside there is believed to a written description on the wall about how someone, a supposed witch was killed and if you read, that’s how you die. There is graffiti, quite a bit. It looks as if there “Satanists” and “Devil Worshipers” there at one time.***

Now there is an old tombstone that glows, supposedly There is a very creepy inscription on it,

A similar Inscription can be seen at The church of Sta. Maria Novella, in Florence. There is a fresco by Masaccio, “The Trinity” (ca. 1427). Below the fresco is a skeleton in the wall, with the epitaph, “io fu gia quel che voi siete e quel chio son voi anco sarete” (“I was once that which you are, and what I am you also will be”).
But this inscription is Americanized and says:
“Remember youth as you go by. As you are now so once was I. As I am now so you shall be. Prepare for death and follow me.”

The “legend” says if you sit on the tombstone when it’s glowing and read the inscription you and everyone you’re with will die. I don’t know if it’s true,

*** Probably just kids out for kicks. No respectable Satanist, Luciferian or “Devil Worshiper” would destroy a place like that

The Draugr

The Draugr

By: Christopher Rogue Ostrowski
Zombies seem to be the main attraction in so many movies and TV shows lately. I would be remiss to leave them out of my weekly article. Since my Ancestry is
Norse/Teutonic, I wanted to do their take on the Zombie or Draugr.
The Draugr are said to have pale flesh or skin as black as Hel, Hel being Norse Hel. She is the Goddess of the Helheim. She is said to have a face that half a beautiful woman and the other half of a Corpse.
Think the colors of a nasty bruise. The deep blues, plums, sickly greens and yellows. That would pretty much make up the every square inch of the Draugr’s body.

There are stories of Draugr being able to shapeshift. Horses, bulls, seals and cats are the common stories. Imagine going to bed with your new stray cat. It curls up on your chest, purring away. Then slowly gets heavier and heavier till it crushes you to death.

Draugr’s are said to be “as big as an Ox” Their swollen bodies are used to ram down doors. Smash through Halls. The all take part in an activity called “House Riding”. The climb to the top of a house, straddle it like a horse and drum their heels on the sides of the roof. Terrifying those below, while they are destroying the rafters.

While our Western image of the zombie draws more from the Caribbean influence of voodoo, it’s good to keep in mind the other traditions that have dealt with the undead. Norse mythology certainly has some great twists on the myths.

Honey Island Swamp Monster – Louisiana

Honey Island Swamp Monster – Louisiana
By Jessica Stacey-Miller

The Honey Island Swamp monster, also known as the Louisiana Wookie, is a fascinating humanoid cryptid believed to have been seen lurking in the swamp since 1963. Honey Island Swamp is one of the most uncorrupted swamp lands in the U.S.A. covering over 70,000 acres of protected wildlife land. The swamp is inhabited by many animals including alligators, wild boars, snakes, black bears and bald eagles.

The first reported sighting was by Harlan Ford, a retired Air Traffic Controller who had a passion for wildlife photography. The monster gained notoriety in 1974 when Harlan and his friend Billy Mills reported to have found odd footprints as well as several bodies of boars with their throats slashed open. Harlan was able to get a plaster cast of the footprint showing webbed toes. The Louisiana Wildlife Commission and zoologist at the Louisiana State University were called out to examine the footprint and it was determined not to be a hoax. They estimated the weight of the creature to be around 400 pounds and an animal of unknown origin. Harlan kept searching for the monster for several years and after Harlan’s death in 1980, a film reel was found with footage of the monster. Though the video is not clear, you can still find a clip of the film online. Another man, Ted Williams, claimed to also have sighted the creature. When asked why he didn’t kill the creature, his response was that he didn’t feel threatened and didn’t believe it wanted to hurt him. Ted took his boat out one day to set trout lines and was never heard from again.

According to legend, the creature is reported as having two rear limbs, roughly 7 feet tall with matted grey hair and yellow or red reptilian eyes. Locals in the area have theorized that the creature is to blame for many livestock deaths as well as cases of missing adults and children. An interesting legend is that of a train wreck in nearby Pearl River in the early twentieth century. According to legend a train full of exotic animals from a traveling circus crashed and the animals fled into the swamp. Supposedly the chimpanzee’s mated with the alligators and the Honey Island Swamp monster is the product of their union. However, this is impossible as monkeys and alligators cannot interbreed.
The creature was featured in many television shows including Lost Tapes, In search of…, Fact or faked: Paranormal files, Swamp people, and Monsters and mysteries in America. There is a real plaster cast footprint of the Honey Island Swamp monster on display at Abita Mystery House. The plaster cast was donated by Dana Holyfield, the grand-daughter of Harland Ford.

Vietnam Rock Apes

Vietnam’s Rock Ape
By Sara Fawley
With the coming of the War in the 1960’s and 1970’s and the influx of American Soldiers into the jungles of Vietnam tales begin to emerge of encounters with strange ape like creatures that came to be known as “Rock Apes”. The creatures are said to be 5 to 6 feet tall, covered mostly in reddish brown fur except for certain areas such as the face, knees, palms of hands and bottoms of feet. They are bipeda with no tail, travel either alone or in small groups. The natives referred to them as Nguoi Rung or “jungle people” and had long known of them. To the locals they were just a fact of life and part of living in the interior jungles.
In fact tales of the same or very similar creatures have long been around the area. Not only Vietnam but Laos, Camnodia and Northern Borneo as well. The creatures have other names besides Nguoi Rung and Rock Ape as it was dubbed during the war. They are also known to locals as Batutut and Ujit. They are all similar in appearance though the ones in Borneo are said to have grayish hair and an aggressive nature with a tendency to attack humans with no provocation.
Although they were well known to the locals these humanoid, hairy bipeds were something new and frightening to the soldiers. While patroling the jungles, fighting off the Viet Cong as well as mosquitoes and other jungle life, stories of encounters with these “Rock Apes” began to become common place.
There are numerous tales ,one of the most well known is told by Veteran Kregg P.J. Jorgenson in his book Very Crazy G.I,.- Strange But True Stories Of The Vietname War. In his book, Jorgenson relates the encounter had by a 6 man unit of the 101 Airborne Division while they were on patrol in the mountainous jungle terrain of Vietnam. It was an arduuos hike carrying heavy packs through an unforgiving environment so the group stopped to take a rest. Although they were exhausted and resting they were still alert and attuned to their surroundings since they were aware that the enemy was everywhere. As they sat there some trees about 15 yards uphill began to violently shake. Assuming it was the enemey the men readied their weapons and sat waiting, watching the trees. But what emerged from the underbrush was not the Viet Cong as they feared. What they saw was a strange creature covered in matted reddish hair. The creature had a muscular frame with an oblong head, large mouth, deep set eyes and stood about 5 feet tall on two legs . The creature seemed to stand just observing them. The soldiers started speculating as to what it was, at first assuming it was an orangatuan until one of them pointed out that orangutans are not native to Vietnam. As they sat arguing, trying to assimilate what they were seeing the creature apparently became bored and slipped back off into the jungle.
There are other tales , many of much more violent than Jorenson’s account. Several of these involve a strategic position known as Hill 868 in the Quang Nam province. Alllegedly this particular site was so overrun with the “Rock Apes” that it became known among soldiers as “Monkey Mountain”. One of the encounters is related by Veteran Steve Canyon. According to Canyon a unit of Marines was out in the jungle of Hill 868 at night testing out a new muzzle flash and noise suppresser for their weapons. As they were getting set up to begin testing they noticed a Rock Ape staring aggresively at them from the nearby vegetation. After sitting there glaring at them for several moments the creature let out a loud barking sound. One of the soldiers threw a rock at it to scare it off. He hit it dead on with the rock, at this point the Rock Ape picked up it’s own rock and hurled it back at the soldiers. The group then noticed that while they were watching the single creature several more , about 20, had gathered around them in the jungle. The creatures began letting out howls and screeches and throwing rocks at the soldiers. The unit made a hasty retreat out of the jungle and back to the hill without engaging the creatures. When asked why they did not fire at the creatures, Canyon stated that “it just didn’t seem right to fire at them with their weapons”.
Now when reading these accounts you may think these were young men taken from their homes and families to fight an unknown enemy in a strange country and environment nHe ew to them so of course theses accounts were probably encounters with misidentified know species native to the area. These would be reasonable assumptions if not for the fact that encounters were not only had by the Americans but there are also tales from the other side of the lines as well. So much so in fact that in 1974 the North Vietnamese party Secretariat ordered a scientific expedition to find definitive proof of these Rock Apes. Professor Vo Quy of the Vietnam National University headed the expedition. They did not see any of the creatures but did find some curious tracks in the deep jungle. Casts were made of the footprints and sent to be analyzed. The analysis found that the print was wider than a human but much to large to be that of an Ape. There were other expeditions including one led by North Vietnamese General Hoang Minh Thau which were also unsuccessful.
Adding weight to the possibility that these tales are more than just campfire stories coming from the overstressed minds of young men fighting for their lives in unfamiliar surroundings are the claims of noted zoologist Dr. John McKinnon. In 1970, Mckinnon claimed to have found tracks of the creature which locals told him came from what they called Batutut. Mckinnon believed that the tracks he found were of hominid origin, possibly similar to the Maganthropus. The tracks were said to have human looking toes but about the size of an Asiatic black bear which are not native to Vietnam. Mckinnon wrote of the findings in a 1978 book, In Search Of The Red Ape. Although he never found solid evidence of the existense of Batutut , Mckinnon did discover several new species of large mammals in the Vu Quang Mountain rainforest in 1992, proving that the region was indeed capabale of hiding and sustaining large unknown species .
So do the Rock Apes exisit and if so, what are they? There are several theories that have been proposed over time. One theory being that the tails are a misidentification of a known species, the Tonkin snub-nosed Monkey. On the surface the snub-nosed monkey sounds like a good candidate. They live in mountainous areas in groups of up to 600. Show little fear of humans and have a wide range of vocalizations including one that sounds remarkably like a bark. Unfortunately this is where the similarities end. The snub-nosed monkey is active in the daytime, is exclusively tree dwelling, has a long prominent tail, is not bipedal and is nowhere near the 4-5 foot stature of the Rock Ape. Rock Apes conversely are bipedal, ground-dwelling, tailess nocturanl creatures.
Another theory is that the American soldiers were well known for imbibing in illict drugs including hallucenogentics and these encounters were just the product of over stressed drug-hazed minds in a stressful situation. There are a few problems with this theory. One being that stories of Batutut, Ujit or Nguoi Rung were known among the natives well before the war and American Soldiers. Also the fact that stories come from both sides of the conflict. Add in the fact that while the may have been some recreational drug use among the soldiers it is highly doubtful that this was happening during combat situations and there are numerous stories or Rock Ape encounters during combat. To believe this theory one would also have to believe that both sides of the conflict spent the entire war in a drug induced haze.
The most logical theory to my mind is that there is some as yet undiscovered species of ape hidden deep in the mountainous jungles of Vietnam. The fact that numerous new species of mammals have been discovered in this area in recent years just solidfies this theory to me. As always, do the research and reading and you decide. For me I will not be surprised if and when a new primate is discovered in the jungles of Vietnam.

The Rehmeyer House

The Rehmeyer House

By: Christopher Rogue Ostrowski

In a Place now known as Spring Valley Park, stands the Rehmeyer House. This place was once Rehmeyer’s Hollow, named after the owner of the House, Nelson Rehmeyer.

Nelson Rehmeyer was what called, in this area, a Pow Wow Doctor. This hits a chord with me because I too practice this type of Folk Medicine.

On Nov. 27th, 1928, Nelson was murdered by a gentleman and three accomplices. John Blymire believed that Nelson Rehmeyer, believed to be a witch, cursed or hexed him. He consulted Nellie Noll, known as the Marietta River Witch. Noll told him that 2 things needed to be down to break the Hex:
1. Steal Rehmeyer’s spell book “The Long Lost Friend” and burn it.
This is a book written in 1820 by John George Hoffman. A type of “Spell book” for this PA German Shamanic Folk Medicine
2. Cut a lock of Rehmeyer’s hair and bury it 6-feet in the ground.

Blymire and his two accomplices broke into Rehmeyer’s home. There was a fight. They brutally beat Nelson and strangled him. The home was set ablaze to cover their tracks.

Somehow, the flames extinguished themselves. The police found enough evidence from the body and scene to charge all three men with Murder of Nelson Rehmeyer.
This became known as the “York Hex Slayings”

Since the Murder, there have been reports of Black dogs with red eyes on the grounds and in the woods. “Smoke” is seen coming from the home. Even “UFO sightings have been reported.

The grounds are said to be “Bad Grounds” by local Native Americans.

Soucouyant

By: Christopher Rogue Ostrowski

Soucouyant

The Soucouyant has its origins in The Caribbean. It is believed to be a Vampire Witch.

A Witch is said to have made a deal or “Pact” with a Demon named Bazil that lived in a Silk Cotton tree. The witch will start to bring blood of the victims for the demon in exchange for Evil Magic Powers.
Upon the Witch’s death, the Witch will then become a Soucouyant.

The Soucouyant is Shape Shifter. During the day it will appear as an old woman, very reclusive. When night falls, She will remove her skin and place it a mortar. In her true form, she appears as a fire ball the streaks across the sky looking for victims. Once a victim is found, the Soucouyant can squeeze through any crack, keyhole or crevice.

The Soucouyant sucks blood from soft parts, arms, and legs of the victims. This leaves a Blackish-blue mark in the morning. If it drains too much blood, the victim will die and become a Socouyant itself or die completely. Then the Soucouyant can use its victim’s skin.

To expose a Soucouyant, one can place a heap of rice at crossroad. The Soucouyant will feel compelled to count every grain of it. It is said to pile the rice high. If the Soucouyant can’t get back into her skin by sunrise, she will die. Also, if you can find her skin and throw salt on it, she can’t put it back on.

To protect your home, place salt at the door and an upside down broom.

Spirit Guides

Spirit Guides

By: Christopher Rogue Ostrowski

I want to take a moment and talk about something that is common in all cultural Belief Systems, “Spirit Guides.” Whether we are talking about Norse, Celt, African, Native American, or Judeo-Christian, they have a form. Angels, Ancestors, Lwa, etc.. They are basically the same. They are an intermediary between the Corporal World and the Divine. They consul, guide and protect us. It is believed that some Spirit Guides are Humans that have learned and became enlightened. They now are advancing in their Spirits progression. They are now in a position to help others advance.
Now, “why is this on a Paranormal Page like NPS?” Well, it’s simple. Being that we are not as connected with our ancestral roots and teaches and the influence of various Religions, what really is that shadow in the corner? We have been taught “that monsters hide in the dark,” “anything that is unexplained must be feared,” “if it goes against or customs, it is evil.”
How do we really know that all the stories are true? We have no “Scientific Proof.” Although, we do, sometimes try to fight off on unproven entity with another unproven entity. If we are going to believe that there are “Bad” ones that are based on a Faith, we need to admit there are “Good” based on a faith. We are so quick to throw Holy Water, Sage and Prayers at something that we don’t understand. If it is a Spirit, why is it here? Is it really malevolent or are we letting paranoia affect us? Maybe it is a Spirit Guide. Spirt guides can come in all forms. The fox along the road that you drove past, might have interest in your wellbeing. The “Shadow Person” in the corner, might be an ancestor trying to warn you about something in your life. The Poltergeist might need to stop you from staying in that house because the pipes are bad.
Science and Beliefs can work together. The more you study, the more you know about both.

Alma – Wild Man of Central Asia

By Ashley Ann Lewis

So we have the Yeti, Bigfoot and then there’s the Alma. Is it the same creature? Or are there different types, breeds, of these creatures. People have different sayings, experiences and even pictures of these creatures but in each place there’s a different story.
The “Wild Man” of Central Asia
In central Asia, in what, until a few years ago was the Soviet Union, there are stories of a large, ape-like creature that inhabits the mountains. It goes by the name of the Alma.
Unlike the better known Bigfoot and Yeti, reports about the Alma say that the creature is much more of a rough, hairy human than an ape. Professor Boris Porchnev, of the Moscow Academy of Sciences, published a description of the creature based on detailed stories he’d gathered from people who had seen it.
“There is no underlayer of hair so that the skin can sometimes be seen,” says the report. “The head rises to a cone-shaped peak,” it continues, and “the teeth are like a man’s, but larger, with the canines more widely separated.” Porchnev’s description also noted that the Alma can run as fast as a horse and swim in swift currents. Breeding pairs remain together living in holes in the ground. For food they eat small animals and vegetables. The creatures are mainly active at night. The report also noted that the animals have a “distasteful smell.”
The first stories of the Alma were gathered in 1881 by N. M. Pzewalski, a traveler in Mongolia who also discovered the Mongolian wild horse. During the Second World War refugees, soldiers, and prisoners of war, often reported seeing the Alma. Slavomir Rawicz, in his book The Long Walk, the story of his escape from a Siberian labor camp, tells of being delayed by a pair of Almas. Chinese soldiers reportedly put food out for the Alma and watched it eat.
M.A. Stonin, a geologist, was prospecting near Tien Shan in 1948. One morning he awoke to cries by his guides that the horses were being stolen. Stonin grabbed his rifle and headed outside to find a figure standing by the horses. It had long red-hair all over it’s body. The creature moved off at Stonin’s shouts and he chased after it. The animal was so man-like, though, that Stonin couldn’t bring himself to shoot it and the thing escaped.
In 1957 a hydrologist named Alexander G. Pronin, on an expedition to study water resources, reported seeing “a being of unusual aspect.” It stood at a distance in the snow with it’s legs wide apart and with arms longer than a normal man’s. Pronin watched it for five minutes, then the creature disappeared behind a rock. Three days later he saw the figure again briefly. Then a week later one of the group’s inflatable boats disappeared without explanation and was later found upstream. Pronin found out that the locals often blamed the “wild man” with stealing household items and taking them into the mountains. This made Pronin wonder if the Alma was responsible for the missing boat.
Alma’s have reportedly been shot and killed, but the carcasses have never been examined by scientists. In 1937, during a clash with the Japanese, a Russian reconnaissance unit in Mongolia spotted two silhouettes coming down a hill toward them. When the figures did not respond to a challenge, sentries shot them. Then next morning the recon unit was surprised when they examined the bodies. They were of a “strange anthropoid ape” that was about the size of a man and covered with long red hair. Unfortunately, because of the war, the bodies could not be returned to Moscow for a proper evaluation.

The Investigative Side of Taking Pictures

The Investigative Side of Taking Pictures

We enjoy seeing our members share their pictures on the NPS page and ask for input from fellow members and the NPS Photography Team as to what may have been captured in their picture. However, the NPS Photography Team has started to notice that when we ask for additional information, the person who shared the picture may not always have it. In order to help educate our members on how to be prepared with this information we have decided to provide some steps to assist with taking your pictures. We hope this helps you when you are taking your pictures to maintain an objective viewpoint when it comes to debunking your pictures as you are taking them.

TAKE THREE! If you have followed the NPS page for a while now you know that we always recommend taking three pictures back to back. The reason we recommend this is so that you can compare the three side by side and determine if the anomaly in question appears in all three. It also allows you to rule out logical explanations such as if your finger was in the way of the flash and caused a black area; if there was a lot of environmental contamination in the area that caused dust orbs to appear; if there was a light reflected off of a reflective surface such as a window or mirror in the area; if your hair or the camera strap was in front of the lens; if there was someone else who walked into the frame unexpectedly; etc.

REVIEW COMPLETELY! Once you have taken all your pictures, upload them to your computer and take a detailed look at them. Some of us on the Photo Team use Photoshop to review pictures. This program allows us to lighten pictures that were taken in the dark to get a better look at the anomaly in question as well as at times convert a color picture to black and white to determine if the anomaly adjusts with the color change. While Photoshop can be an expensive program to use, you might look into other photo adjustment programs or see what’s available for free online. The important thing is to really question your picture and see what you find by adjusting these types of things prior to sharing with us on the page. Remember it IS a requirement of Rule 15 to include what YOU have to try and debunk your picture prior to sharing it with us.

WRITE DOWN DETAILS! Remember to write down the time and date of your picture – most digital cameras have this option on them. You will also want to include what the weather was like when you took the picture. If you forget this information, hop over to Weather Underground and type in the zip code for the area along with the date to obtain this information. When the Photo Team asks you for the zip (also another requirement of Rule 15) we are asking for it to check out the weather in the area to see if moisture, humidity, cold, rain, etc. could have played a factor in the anomaly presented. You can find Weather Underground via this link:https://www.wunderground.com/history/

KNOW YOUR CAMERA! Long time members know we frown upon the use of cell phone cameras for investigation purposes. Check out our department on the NPS website for more information behind this. If you are using a digital camera you should be able to properly adjust the settings on it for your environment (ISO, aperture, f-stop, etc.) so that you are using the appropriate settings for your location. If you are using the manual mode you can pull the EXIF data from the picture to see what the settings were for the picture. Be familiar with your camera so you can take the best possible pictures.

WHAT IS EXIF DATA? The reason we ask for the photo ORIGINAL to be emailed to us is so that we can view the EXIF data from the picture. This data tells us how the camera behaved when it snapped the picture and will give us clues into what the anomaly could be and why it happened.

WHY DO YOU THINK IT’S PARANORMAL? One of the other requirements of Rule 15 is telling us why you think your picture is paranormal. After you have reviewed your picture, done some research into the anomaly, and asked and answered all logical explanations, why is it you still think your picture is possibly paranormal? Tell us so we know how you are viewing your picture. Once we have reviewed the steps you took to debunk your picture we will have a better understanding of why you think it’s paranormal by providing this explanation.

Taking a look at the investigative side of taking pictures gives us an insight to why the NPS Photography Team as well as NPS members ask the questions they do of pictures. We are all looking for that Holy Grail of paranormal pictures that has yet to be captured – let’s be smart in our review of the potentials so that the one that does pass all scrutiny here will also pass all scrutiny in the scientific community.

You may always email your original pictures to the NPS Photography Team at any time for review. Our email address is npsphotosubmission@gmail.com

LIGHT STREAKS

NPS PHOTOGRAPHY TEAM ARTICLE
LIGHT STREAKS

By: April Abercrombie

The purpose of this demonstration is to show how you can get streaking in your photos, even if you are using your flash. You do not need a long exposure to have this happen.

The photos provided are a couple of shots I took with my iPhone 5s. I have included screen shots of the EXIF data from both photos. Notice how the exposure time is the same for both photos.

With the first photo, I held the phone as still as possible. In the photo with the streaks, I moved the phone slightly as I took the photo. It takes only a very light movement to cause streaking from any light sources in the distance.

If you are walking around outside at night snapping photos here and there, it is very easy to unintentionally have your camera in movement as you take a photo.

Cadborosaurus

Cadborosaurus

By: Jessica Stacey-Miller

There is a long history of Cadborosaurus, affectionately nick named Caddy, a sea serpent creature well known in British Columbia, Canada. Caddy was first seen off the coast of Victoria Island and described as having a long neck with a camel or horse-like head, a pair of front flippers and a large fan-like tail. Some accounts have the description of hind flippers rather than a tail. There have been over 300 reported sightings in the past 200 years. The earliest reports of Caddy were in the aboriginal tribes of British Columbia, as well as Alaska. The sea creature is also known as “Hiytil’iik” by the Manhousat tribe, “T’chain-ko” in Sechelt mythology, and “Numske lee Kwala” by the Comox tribe. The Inuit tribes often painted the creature on the sides of their canoes to ward the creature off.

Stories have existed since the 1800’s but the first sighting reported was in 1933 by a Victoria resident and his wife while out on their yaht. They described their encounter as seeing a “horrible serpent with the head of a camel.” Another report came soon after in 1934. This time it was the government who reported seeing the creature and the exact same description was given. Some local fisherman that same year also reported seeing two serpents in the water. One was over 60 feet long and the other was half the size at about 30 feet long. Some hunters claimed to have seen Caddy rise out of the water, swallow the duck they just wounded and then submerge back under water. One of the most notable reports came in 1937 when a whaling station in Vancouver believed to have finally caught Caddy. Inside the stomach of a sperm whale was a carcass 20 feet in length, with the head of a horse, a snake-like body and a spiny tail. They were able to capture a picture but the remains of the serpent somehow mysteriously disappeared. Another picture was taken in 1939 by Captain Paul Sowerby. More accounts came about several years later in 1953 when 10 people saw Caddy from various vantage points and every description was the same. A video was also released in 2009 and a short clip of the video was featured on the Discovery TV show Hilstranded. The clip can also be found on youtube.

There are various theories of what this sea creature could be. Most of those theories do not fit the description at all. Some of those theories include basking sharks, sea lions, and pipefish. Two possible explanations could be that of a giant oarfish which are known to reach up to 65 feet in length. Another possible explanation is a Zeuglodon, which is an ancient whale thought to be extinct. Edward Bousfield, a retired marine biologist has made huge efforts in the attempt to find and prove the existence of Caddy. Mr. Bousfield and his partner Paul Leblond, chairman and founder of BCSCC, Canada’s cryptozoology organization have been pushing to formally introduce Caddy as a new species, Cadborosaurus willsi. They have also called upon the scientific community to help find Caddy. So if you ever find yourself in Victoria, keep your eyes on the water. Perhaps you will spot Caddy!

Video Basics

Videography Basics

By: Kent Daniel S. Villavicencio

What is Video?, Video is basically photography but taken a whole bunch of times to give motion as to what was originally known as a still shot. The quality of your video will depend on the size of the sensor going from Full Frame of 35mm down to 1/2.3’’, this is important because it controls the limit as to how much light can enter your camera lens when taking video. Another useful accessory in making your video look it’s best is having the ability to use an interchangeable lens, lenses range from distances of 13-45mm, the equivalent of 3 to 6 feet to lenses of 100 to 300mm which can be 100 feet or more. Things to know about lenses is that the quality works hand in hand with what size your sensor is so if you have a Full frame sensor of 35mm you get exactly the distance of what you lens is suppose to cover however if you have a camera that is the fraction of that size for the sensor you will have to multiply the denominator number to see how much more distance you are getting then normally what your lens would provide. Be sure to look for lenses that are compatible with the ring on the body of your camera, camera rings differ in sizes from full frame and ex cameras share the same size it’s just the mount that changes depending on the kind of mount. The full frames are compatible with EX but the DX are not compatible with full frame bodies. It doesn’t have to do with the mount itself but with the focal lens. Be sure to look for cameras with a dependable external storage, a few years back most professionals use CF cards because they were most secure and don’t break as easily now the current standard is SD “Secure Digital”. Flip Screens are very useful when it comes to video, not strictly necessary but make your composition easier especially in un normal angles. Another thing to note about cameras is the accessories you use, it is recommended to have a tripod, flash, led light, headphones, external power like batteries or powered supply, cleaning kit, stabilizer for shooting for handheld for longer periods of time, pouches for batteries and memory cards, multipurpose screwdrivers for certain accessories and screws for certain accessories as well that cannot slide into a hotshot compartment. You should look for a camera that is High Definition, a dependable brand, has interchangeable lenses, works excellent in low light and has the ability to record with an external Microphone for professional results.

Globsters? What On Earth is That?

Globsters? What On Earth is That?
By Sara Fawley

What in the world is a Globster you ask? It is the name given to mysterious immediately unidentifiable carcassas that wash up on the shores of the ocean and sometimes(though not often) lakes
This does not apply to every carcass that washes up on shore. If it is recognizable as a known marine animal then it is not a Globster. These masses that wash up on shore are so bizarre looking that when they are discovered most think they are some sort of sea monster. In his book “Mysterious Creatures: A Guide to Cryptozoology” George M Eberhart give this description of Globsters: No apparent bone structure, ivory -colored, rubbery, stringy, extremely tough skin, covered in fine hair or fiber, no defined head, no visible eyes.”

Let’s look at a few well known Globsters. In 1896 was tossed a massive corpse on the beach in St Augustine Florida.. It was a 6 foot high rubbery blob.It was speculated at the time to be from a giant octupus. In 1956 th “dry harbor carcass” washed up on an Alaskan Beach. It was 100 feet long and covered in 2 in reddish fur. In the early 1960s one washed up on the West Coast of Tasmania. The blob was about 20 feet long by 15 feet wide and had 6 to 8 strange lobes along the side. These are just a few. There have been many others over the centuries. So what the heck are they?

There has been specutlation over the years that Globsters are everything from basking shark carcassas to giant octopuses to the remains of prehistoric animals that were frozen in icebergs and finally thawed and washed ashore. In 2004 Bilogist Sidney Pierce and his team gathered all available Globster specimens and examined them using electron microscopes as well as molecular and DNA testing. Their conclusion was that all available specimens were from various species of great whales. Some will refute the assertion that all Globsters are whale blubber saying that the tests on some were inconclusive. The truth is that no matter how advanced DNA testing is it is only as good as the specimin being examined. If the specimin is to degraded or there is other contamination then the results could be inconclusive. However given the fact that all of the ones that were conclusive have come back as whale blubber it is probably safe to say that other ones resembling them are most likely the same thing.

We will always have stories of mysterious sea monsters and be looking for evidence or bodies. I for one do not think the answer is Globsters.

5 Barriers to a good EVP Recording

5 Barriers to a good EVP Recording

by Pam Williams

First of all, what is an EVP?
An EVP, or Electronic Voice Phenomenon, is described as an intelligible voice, found on any recording media, which has no physical explanation. Many voices are thought to be from a deceased person, or sometimes many people. This is the primary reason that once one was found, people began to experiment with recordings, trying to repeat the circumstance where voices were supposedly heard.

What types of recordings are there?
Some, but not all, types of recording devices are: Radio frequency devices (ghost box or spirit box), hand held recorders, digital voice recorders, cell phone apps. (such as EVP maker), and computer programs with built in mic..
There is also a new one-Environmentally stimulated speech synthesis-but it is a relatively new technique, and it should be noted that all speech synthesis approaches currently being tried do not support speaker recognition.

OK, so now I have my recording….what barriers will I find?
EVP’s are one of the most controversial subjects in the history of ghost hunting.

1) While listening, you may become frustrated. Some may come in as a whisper, some sounding like another language. One person may hear one thing said, while someone else hears something totally different.

2) Background noises may distort what and how you hear something. It could be a car driving by, people outside, water dripping, an owl hooting or dog barking, or bugs or rodents moving about.

3) EVP’s may be distorted by cheap or poor quality hearing devices. Static from electric or telephone wires, or other electronic devices, can disturb the sounds you hear. If you have a poor device, it can make it hard to understand the voices, or noises you hear.

4) You, yourself, or people with you can cause hearing issues. They may step while you are recording, talk to someone in a whisper, run into objects in the dark, or breathe close to you, causing inaccurate EVP’s. If you have others with you, or even if you are alone, always document your movements, breathing, if you or someone runs into, or moves objects, or is talking. This will allow you to keep a record of “false positives”.

5) When you have done your recording, always try to listen back on headphones that cover your ears (earmuff style), and in a quiet spot. This blocks out background noise, and allows you to hear if anything was caught. ALWAYS get a second opinion, and if you question something, take it to someone with extensive audio experience to listen as well, to verify or debunk what you think you heard.

Be sure to set up a method of saving your recordings in you computer that will allow you to easily relocate them. A good practice is to date the recordings, with time and date, and where they occurred.

Walter Russell

Walter Russell
By Stephanie Kelly

Walter Russell, 1871-1963, was a man of many talents. He has been called a painter, sculptor, musician, and natural philosopher to list a few. He is also considered to be part of the New Thought Movement that started in the 1800’s and was based on combining spirituality and science. Some of the main focuses in the New Thought Movement were hypnotism, mental and spiritual healing along with health care that focused on illness being more mental than physical. To explain it simpler, the New Thought Movement focuses on being one with the world as a whole and less on the man made.
What was Mr. Russell’s role in the New Thought Movement? Walter Russell believed that humans evolved in stages, not only physically but also mentally. He was among the few that believed that the human brain had made leaps in its focus and process such as going from animal awareness as a primary focus to rational awareness. Russell accepted the thought of Richard Bucke that the next big leap in humans was going to be from rational awareness to spiritual consciousness. In an article for Message of the Divine Iliad, Russell stated “This New Age is marking the dawn of a new world-thought. That new thought is a new cosmic concept of the value of man to man. The whole world is discovering that all mankind is one and that the unity of man is real – not just an abstract idea. Mankind is beginning to discover that the hurt of any man hurts every man, and, conversely, the uplift of any man uplifts every man.” Mr. Russell also leased a building known as Swannanoa Mansion for the University of Science and Philosophy. This school was started by Mr. Russell and his wife with the motto “Our purpose is to help unfold the spiritual nature of man in order that the human race will find happiness and peace through knowledge and practice of the Love Principle of Giving and Regiving which Nature alone practices and man defies.” This organization still has a following today though it is no longer recognized as a teaching University and focuses on providing information for people to study independently.
With some research into Mr. Russell and his thoughts on the New Age and New Thought Movement, here is what I have gathered from his writings and biography:
Mr. Russell believed that our brain originally focused on processing its surroundings; animals, plants, weather, etc. This would of been done in a primal survival type of thought process. An example of this today is how an animal can hide an illness or injury so that predators won’t be able to easily spot its weakness. As we, as humans, developed socially and intellectually our thought process also developed. With social and physical stability we were able to develop a mental aware of ourselves more than our surroundings. This in turn caused us to become more aware of our health and injuries and allowed us to begin to show our weaknesses. This also would of caused our brains to develop a compassion and protective concern for others. My interruption of Walter Russell’s believe is that the next stage of mental evolution is that humans will become more aware of the unexplained and spiritual aspect of the world. We will also be able to control our Though he never truly states what our brains with start to process or how they will affect our lives, it does bring up a good conversation and focus of study.
Walter Russell was a very well educated man and he believed that one day spirituality and science will be able to work together under a common goal. Does this mean that he thought basic scientific methods could be used in proving spiritual and unexplained occurrences? It is hard to say if his theory of combining these two has developed or progressed since his death, it is also hard to say if his theory is valid.

CIA Files Continued – Belgian Congo

CIA Files Continued
Belgian Congo – August 1952
By Stephanie Kelly

On August 16, 1952, the CIA distributed a set of papers from March 1952. This small stack of papers were all concerning information about a reported unexplained flying object seen in the Congo. These objects were best described as two fiery disks that were located in the southern part of the district along or just east of, the Laupula River. It was said that the disks glided in air with “elegant curves and changed their position many times.” Some also said that they had a penetrating hiss and buzz that could be heard by people on the ground for the 10 to 12 minutes they were in view.
A man only referred to as Commander Pierre with the Elisabethville airfield, immediately went after these two disks that were seen. Commander Pierre was able to give a detailed description of the UFO’s that could make any skeptic question their view! According to the report by Pierre the saucer was 12 to 15 meters in diameter (39 to 49 feet) and was the shape of a disk, it was able to shift elevation of 200 or more meters (approximately 650 feet) in just a few seconds. He also said that it would suddenly shot down to just above the treetops which he estimated at 20 meters, or 65 feet, from the top of the trees as he kept it in sight. Another interesting thing to add is that, Commander Pierre did not think that these crafts could have had any person on them. His view was that the erratic and irregular speed would of created such heat that the it would have been “impossible for a person to stay inside the stable core.” He also evaluated the speed of the aircraft, at the time he stopped pursuing it, as 1,500 kilometers per hour, or about 930 miles per hours.
As a researcher, I can understand why the CIA would want to question this sighting and evaluate the claims. That part of the Congo was the home to Shinkolobwe. For those that don’t know, Shinkolobwe is a very protected mine located in the Congolese that was used by the United States for the mining of uranium for use in the Manhattan Project.
Why did the CIA feel that this information need to be provided to the State Department, Army, Navy, Air force, National Security Resources Board and FBI? Remember, this is obviously a UFO and no explanation appears to be readily available for it like many others sightings in this time frame. Don’t most Governments firmly deny the existence of UFO’s, if so, why did this one get so much attention. In the 1950’s no country had the ability the make an aircraft that fits the above description with the ability to maneuver in the flight patterns described. With that said, I am pretty doubtful that any country would have the ability as of today. Something got the attention of the American’s and the German’s but what was it and why?

DUST IS EVERYWHERE pt2

DUST IS EVERYWHERE pt2

I was recently approached by a client stating that she kept getting orbs in videos of her child. She mentioned to me that it only happened when she was playing. I quickly searched YouTube using the search terms “Orbs Around Kids.” There were a few videos…quite a few…that matched that search criteria. The one that matched closely to what she was describing was titled “Ghost orbs flying around children”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HscRZuJWfnw

There are a few things going on in this video that could cause the appearance of orbs. One is the jumping around, in this case, on a bed. Similar to last week’s post “Dust Is Everywhere,” jumping on a surface that inherently collects dust will cause dust to fly. My first full time job was a door to door vacuum sales person for Kirby and one of our major selling points was the amount of dead skin (aka dust) we would pull out of a mattress.

Let’s take a look at something that may be not so obvious. It’s a hypothesis and hasn’t been proven but can likely happen. Dust is light weight. So much so that it sometimes appears to float in the sun light. If one of these children or even the person recording, disturbed some dust with the smallest bursts of air from clothing being moved, breath, or anything, it could be then caught by an ac vent or draft, that small speck of dust could potentially be moved from one side of the room to the other.

Let’s now look at the statement “That only happens when the child plays.” I asked this question right after and I’ll ask you the same as well, “How often do you record that spot when the children don’t play?”
Remember, Ask questions, think about the logical possibilities, ask more questions, make an assessment and test your assessment. Wash Rinse Repeat

Photography Basics: Cell Phone Cameras vs. Digital Cameras

Photography Basics – Cell Phone Cameras vs Digital Cameras
Everyone has a cell phone today and loves to use it for more than just talking on the phone, which is its main function. Folks love to take pictures with their phone and then think the device is the equivalent to a digital camera. Sorry to burst some bubbles, but that’s like comparing apples to oranges. Let’s take a look at what makes up a camera then see how cell phone cameras compare.

A digital camera has three parts basically – the body, the lens and the sensor. Let’s take a look at each of these individually.

* The body simply is the housing for the working parts. It can be large or small but ultimately the user will decide on the body based on comfort and being able to access the buttons and functions on the camera.

*The lens is the eye of camera and is the most important part of capturing your photos – zooming in or out for the right shot. There are prime lenses which don’t allow for zooming but will take sharper images and are usually more economical. The zoom lenses tend to be a little more of an investment since they allow you to zoom in on subjects for your picture. The zoom lenses are heavier and larger than the prime lenses. In addition to these there are other lenses for different pictures – wide-angle, standard, medium, telephoto and ultra-telephoto. Wide-angle lenses generally have a focal length up to 35mm and can capture more in the picture but it could cause some distortion in the picture. Standard lenses have a focal length of 35-50mm and are more likely to show things how we actually see it. Medium lenses have a focal length of 60-100 mm and are mostly used for portraits. Telephoto lenses are over 100mm and will zoom in pretty far but are more likely to produce motion blur and don’t perform as well in low light. Ultra-telephoto lenses are over 400 mm.

*The sensor is what catches the exposure to capture the picture. It is exposed to light coming through the lens then records that exposure which is then processed and saved. The sensor is what affects the quality of your pictures. This is where the megapixel size comes into play. The higher the megapixel, the more likely you are to see more noise in your pictures. You will always want to test out a camera first before just buying it based on the megapixel size.

You can see just from the above how a cell phone camera can drastically differ from a digital camera. But let’s break down the cell phone camera as well.

*Cell phone cameras don’t have a body as the camera function is contained in the same device as the parts that make the phone function.

*The lens on most cell phone cameras is between 20-40mm, a range smaller than the standard lens of a digital camera. This can cause distortion in pictures so it’s important to take pictures from an acceptable distance to try and balance this distortion. Obviously you wouldn’t be able to zoom in on anything because the lens is not the right size. You can always by a cell phone camera lens kit but while this boosts quality of the pictures taken, it can add minor artifacting, prevent light from reaching the phone which can affect the exposure, and you’d have to remember to carry this kit with you when you weren’t using the phone as a camera.

* The sensor in most cell phones is obviously tiny compared to a digital camera but it also is affected more by how much light it receives and this can have a definite impact on your pictures. More light, better pictures, less noise; less light, poorer quality pictures and more noise.

After looking at each piece individually, it’s obvious why as paranormal investigators we recommend using a digital camera over a cell phone camera. In order to accurately capture anything in a picture we need to use the best suited equipment and your cell phone just isn’t the best. Will it work in a pinch? Sure. Will you be able to have your picture stand passing the debunking test? Probably not because there are so many reasons it would fail. Next time you’re thinking about adding a new piece of equipment to your team’s collection, make sure and look at a good digital camera.

Boldt Castle

Boldt Castle

by Lillee Allee
Alexandria Bay, New York
1-800-847-5263
Open May through October with access by boat or shuttle from Canada and the United States. The gorgeous grounds are also available for private weddings.

Mr. Boldt ran the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City. During vacations, the Boldts stayed at a family home on the St . Lawrence River. In 1900, Boldt commissioned 300 builders to erect the beautiful 120 room fairytale resort on Heart Island, with gardens, a yacht house and a children’s playhouse.
This beautiful castle is said to be haunted by the ghost of Mrs Boldt. Mr. Boldt had it built as a labor of love for his wife. After her sudden death in 1904, he ordered all work stopped. It was never completed, and left on its own for 74 years. Boldt himself never returned to the island. In 1977, the Thousand Island Bridge Authority would open the castle and use all monies for the enjoyment of future generations. Since then, several million dollars have been spent or restoration and rehabilitation. Lights are often reported in the windows of the castle, long after the last boat has left.

BARA-HACK

BARA-HACK
Pomfret, Connecticut

Bara-Hack, Welsh for “breaking of bread”, is a long abandoned village in the Ragged Hills area of Eastern Connecticut settled in the late 1700’s. Very little of the village remains, having been long ago grown in by the surrounding forest. Bara-Hack was purchased in 1776 by Obadiah Higginbotham, though he did not settle there until 1790. His family was shortly after joined by Jonathan Randall, a British Army deserter and his family. Both were of Welsh descent and slave owners. Making their living by crafting flax wheels, a few other families joined the settlement as well. Higginbotham had built a water wheel and a mill. The small settlement, however, did not last. Demand for their product waned; families left for more prosperous areas, and the founding families passed on as well within the century.
Bara-Hack became a stop for colonial history buffs, who followed the paths from Ragged Hill to what little remained of Bara-Hack, mainly building foundations, paths and the cemetery where the Higginbotham and Randall families and their slaves remain buried. In days since, the tiny village has drawn paranormal buffs more often than history buffs. Reports of ghostly activity on the settlement grounds began as far back as its first days, most commonly the spirit of a baby sitting in a tree over the cemetery, reported by the families’ slaves and continuing to this day. Known also as the “Village of Voices”, some claim Bara-Hack to be the basis for The Blair Witch Project. Other claims include hearing laughter of children, as well as singing, the rumble and hoof beats of horse-drawn buggies, cattle and other domestic animals.
Newspaper articles have noted alleged spirit orbs and light streaks over the cemetery, as well as the face of a bearded man hovering over the graveyard. A paranormal team reported in 1971 seeing the bearded man, in addition to a wealth of other potential evidence. Some believe that the veil between this world and the next is thin in these woods, allowing a glimpse into days long past. Due in part to the unwelcome attention drawn to Pomfret by the investigators’ reports, as well as the newspaper articles, in addition to the dangers to amateur “ghost hunters” posed by crumbling remains of structures, holes from wells, and mountain lions, Bara-Hack is now private property, and access is prohibited.

Undercliff Sanitorium

Undercliff Sanitorium

Undercliff Road
Meriden, Connecticut
The first sanitorium in the United States to focus solely on treating children with tuberculosis and other debilitating contagious disease, the building which came to be called Undercliff Sanitorium opened in 1910 at the base of South Mountain in Meridan, CT. Over the years, the sprawling facility also served as a mental hospital, and what many would refer to as a long term care mental asylum. As did so many other mental health facilities in the mid-1970’s, Undercliff closed its doors for the last time.
In addition to children and later adults separated from their families while being treated for diseases that slowly and painfully claimed so many of those inflicted, Undercliff also was the setting for horrific abuse inflicted in the name of treatment of those with mental health disorders. Some forms of treatment for mental health disorders included painful electro-convulsive therapy, lobotomy, immersion in hot or cold water, and isolation in small, dark, stimulus free rooms. At least one patient was purported to have been murdered by other patients. Convicted cannibalistic serial killer Hadden Clark lived in the area in his early years, claims to have buried at least one of his victims on the grounds.
Common belief is that many of the former residents and other victims have never left the abandoned institution. Children who had to be away from their families as they suffered and subsequently passed from tuberculosis, German measles, etc. are heard laughing as well as crying. Their shadowy figures and apparitions are seen in the halls or in the windows. Likewise footsteps can be heard running through the hallways. Some claim that these are hospital staff running to emergences or after mental patients; others claim they are actually mental patients running away from staff. Their screams can be heard inside the facility. The patient allegedly murdered by peers is reported wandering the grounds. Although entering the abandoned facility and its grounds was forbidden, EVPs and photos can be found on the internet. In 2010, one of three teen aspiring ghost hunters was killed when he jumped from a cliff while running from police when they were caught trespassing.
The former Undercliff Sanitorium, after sitting vacant for decades was demolished in 2013.

The CIA’s “X-Files”

The CIA’s “X-Files”
1952 – East Germany

In Jan 2016, the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States declassified approximately 99
records concerning their involvement and investigation of UFO sightings. With the vast about of
records that were released it would take months to get them all through the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) but, thankfully, the CIA has made 10 of these documents available
online if you know where to look.

One of the many reports that was made available is that concerning a Flying Saucer in East Germany. On the first page of Report No. 00-W-23682 it states that the report was Published in
a newspaper out of Athens on Jul. 9, 1952 and was distributed on the 23 Aug 1952. This article titled “Flying Saucers” In East Germany states that a man by the name of Oscar Linke, former Mayor of Gleimershausen had reported a Flying Saucer that was currently being investigated
by West Berlin intelligence officers.

Let me start by going over a little information concerning Mr. Linke. Mr. Oscar Linke was born around 1906 in Germany. He, with his wife and children, had recently escaped from what is
called the Soviet Zone before entering East Germany. The Soviet Zone was actually the Soviet Occupation Zone that was under the control of Russia after WWII. This is rather important because the United States was keeping an eye on Russia along with Germany due to concern
of military advancement or acts of war from either side.

Now, what and where did Mr. Linke see this? According to Mr. Linke himself, he was riding his
motorcycle with his 11 year old daughter when a tire blew out just outside of town. As they were walking, his daughter pointed out something she saw about 500 feet away. They continued to walk toward it and when about 50 feet away he could see two people in clothes that looked metallic looking down toward the ground. They still moved closer! At which point he could see, over a fence, a large object shaped similar to a frying pan. It had 2 rows of holes and a tower
type shape on the top of it. After, according to Mr. Linke, they heard his daughter, both men jumped onto the tower and disappeared. At this point, Mr. Linke watched the object slowly rise, turn and disappear. He then proceeded to go to the location that the object was at and found a freshly dug hole the approximate size of the tower.

With his statement in mind, let’s go over some of the information provided and available. This event happened just outside of the Soviet Zone and Mr. Linke did have concerns about the Soviet’s Military machine advancements, so did many of the Allied Nations. He also says that many people in East Germany are restricted on where they could go due to them knowing too much.

Why was the United States investigating a claimed sighting in Germany? Could it of had something to due with the sightings in July of 1952 in Washington D. C.? Could they have been concerned about the Russian’s and a possible Military Aircraft? Of course, the CIA doesn’t
make access to the full information readily available. This leaves up many questions that have
not been answered, and may never truly and honestly be answered.

Heracleion (Thonis)

From Fable To Fact: Heracleion

By Stephanie Kelly

Not far from Alexandria, in the modern day Aboukir Bay, was the location of a city written into history. Heracleion, also referred to as Thonis, was described as a glorious port of entry to Egypt for all of the Greek world. It was believed, thanks to the writings of Herodotus in the 5th century BC, that Thonis-Heracleion was
a magnificent city and housed a Temple of Amun. Another record of Heracleion was done around the 1st century BC by a geographer named Strabo. Strabo stated that the city of Heracleion was located straight
east of Canopus off of the River Nile. The belief developed from the historical writings and appear to state
that Thonis-Heracleion would of been founded in the 8th century BC as a religious, cultural and trading hub
until it’s demise in the 8th century AD.
Herodotus was a well known, and well respected, Greek Historian whose writing held a certain unquestioned value in his time earning him the title of the Father of History. Herodotus wrote, in The Histories, of a
marvelous great temple that was built at Heracleion to mark the spot where the famous hero Herakles first placed his foot on Egyptian soil. Also in this book he notes that Helen, of Troy, visited Heracleion with Paris
not long before the start of the Trojan War. I must add that many historical records in The Histories have also been disproven either by research, science or discovery.
With the two mentioned sources and only a few inscriptions found concerning Thonis-Heracleion, many scientists began to put it in the same classification as Atlantis, a fable. At the exact time that most historians and scientists had written off this mysterious city, in steps Franck Goddio. Mr. Goddio was a well known treasure hunting historian who was set on finding ancient ship wreckage and battleships from the 18th
century. He had many reason to believe that there were many ships lost to the sea in the Aboukir Bay. In
2000, the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities, agreed that his search of the Aboukir Bay could find
some of the lost vessels and treasures, thus granting him access in cooperation with the Council. Little did ESCA or Goddio know that they were about to discover the truth behind Thonis-Heracleion.
After just a few days of mapping the area and setting out grids for exploration, the teams noticed something very strange. It appeared to be a large, man-made, structure. Around 6.5 kilometers off the coast, this group
of historians found what appeared to be a temple. After marking the building on their maps, planning their dive
and procedures, drivers left the ship in an attempt to identify this mysterious creation.
One can only imagine the excitement, surprise and shock these men felt when they found markings and artifacts that indicted this was the Temple of Amun and Khonsou, Khonsou is Herakles in Greek. Almost immediately the hunt for lost vessels became the excavation and recovery of artifacts from the temple.
Things such as jewelry, coins, ceramics, and statues were all located rather quickly. It was as if this temple was frozen in time at the bottom of the sea.
It didn’t take much time for the researchers, historians, scientists and divers to understand what they had
just found. One inscription said Thonis another inscription said Heracleion. Thonis-Heracleion was not a
fable after all, it was, in fact, a truly eloquent city lost in time to the depths of the Bay it was built to protect.
Not only was the temple mentioned by Herodotus found but docks with Egyptian style anchors were also found. Goddio did manage to find what he was searching for though, over 60 wrecked ships in the Bay
though they dated back from the 6th to 2nd century BC!
This is another Ancient Mystery that is just starting to come to light. What caused this city to disappear?
Could this city of caused many of the unexplained experiences that had been reported over that last few centuries in and around the bay? Where does this take the research into other cities that were thought to be fables or mythological stories?

Nikola Tesla – Human beings, not of this world

t1February 9, 1901, Nikola Tesla, in an article published in the Collier’s Weekly, made many statements concerning his experiments at his Laboratory in Colorado that would make many in his field question him for the rest of his life. “I was familiar… with such electrical disturbances as are produced by the sun, Aurora Borealis and earth currents, and I was as sure as I could be of any fact that these variations were due to none of these causes…” That statement alone made many question the sanity, stability and intelligence of Tesla. How could a well known scientist and inventor believe that he had experienced something that couldn’t be explained?

As his fellow researchers, engineers and scientists continued reading this, somewhat rambling, article their eyes widened, “They are the results of an attempt by some human beings, not of this world; to speak to us by signals…”
These two statements, by themselves, make you wonder what did he hear? My first thought was these statements have to be, in some way, taken out of context! What scientist would openly, and with complete certainty, say they received an attempt at communication from someone or something not of this world. With some time and research I was able to find the original Articles titled “Talking with the Planets” (http://earlyradiohistory.us/1901talk.htm). This article appears to cover his presumption and experimentation in Colorado in the late 1890’s.

t2Upon reading this complete article in detail, twice, I had to find more concerning what he had experienced and what tests he had done in that Colorado Laboratory. Certain statements made in the article such as, “My first observations positively terrified me, as there was present in them something mysterious, not to say supernatural, and I was alone in my laboratory at night; but at that time the idea of these disturbances being intelligently controlled signals did not yet present itself to me” made me want to see what exactly these experiments were!
Without the extensive knowledge that Tesla had, it’s hard for me understand his notes concerning the Colorado experiments. What is certain is that Tesla did keep detailed notes of his daily or weekly experiments concerning a Spark Gap Transmitter. He also used a “Magnifying Transmitter” in these experiments along with controlling and altering the electromagnetic fields to fit his needs. Sadly, his notes do not exactly mention what he experienced, in detail, concerning the sound or signal that he observed.

t3Did Tesla truly experience a paranormal occurrence? How, and at what stage of his research, did he have this first observation? It is known that Tesla was a very intelligent man, but would tendency for instability, both mentally and financially, alter the value of his experiences? There are many questions that Tesla left unanswered and it is not known if answers will ever be found for these questions!

Death Ship of the Platte River

ty1Death Ship of the Platte River By Katie Snow
between Torrington and Alcova
Wyoming U.S.A.

If you ever find yourself south of Casper Wyoming during late fall stay clear of the banks of the Platte River. Sightings dating back to 1862 of a phantom ghost ship swirl amongst the residents of this area. Looming out of the fog you see the gray sails, frosted crew and old time ship caressing the waters beckoning you to see its’ corpsly cargo. From a bygone era tales of those who cast their gaze upon it have found their loved ones deceased upon their arrival home or shortly there after.

The legend states that the first sighting was by a trapper Leon Webber. According to records he felt uneasy and a cold chill enveloped him, mere seconds later a ship appeared from out of the shroud of fog. It was that of an old time clipper type ship, with a crew covered in frost surrounding a body lying upon its deck. The crew step aside only to reveal the body in which they were feverishly working over is that of your loved one who upon your arrival home has succumbed to death or quickly there after.

Attempts to photograph the ship never turn out as it usually only shows a photo of solid grey or a white haze surrounded by the fog of the banks of the river.

Wyoming State Hospital

tyWyoming State Hospital by Katie Snow
831 Wyoming 150, Evanston, WY 82930

In a town that still contains most of its original 1870 buildings lies the Wyoming State Hospital. The only of its kind in the state it still is run
as a mental hospital since it opened her doors in 1887. Containing 230 beds this town has had an odd past which only adds to the questions of who the hanging woman in the window may be.

Eerily enough a sheet hangs in the a window as people report the vision of a young lady who repeatedly shows herself as hanging from a noose. It is also reported that objects move on their own , voices, lights appearing when electric is off, howling, moving rocking chairs and floating lights.

Started in 1888 but not completed until 1901, Wyoming’s Frontier Prison opened its doors with 104 cells, no water, no electrical components and barely what one would consider heat.

13,500 prisoners walked through its doors over its years and overcrowding was a constant issue. 32 additional cells were added in 1904 and even women were housed until they were transferred to Colorado. Located on Interstate 80. The “Old Pen” was in operation until 1981.

This prison housed the death row inmates and nine were hanged, five sent to the gas chamber and some died of prison house incidents such as riots, beatings, escapes as well as murders. All in all a total of 250 died within its walls.

It is said that the energy of the prison can be felt as negative because of the horrible history which has manifested into what some claim to be paranormal activity such as full body apparitions, cold spots, dis-embodied voices. The prison allows overnight lockdowns as well as tours throughout certain times of the year.

Japan’s Demonic Girls’ Bathrooms

Jap1by Virginia Carraway Stark

There are few places as frightening as a washroom in Japan.

Japan has some of the scariest urban legends, ghost stories and monsters but some of the worst of them are the ones that start off in the bathroom: particularly the girls washroom in elementary schools. Hanaka-san, also known as ‘Hanaka of the Toilet’ is the story of a ghost girl who reputedly lives in either the third stall from the end or in the washroom on the third floor. The origins of the story are murky at best but twenty years ago Hanaka-san fever swept Japan and everyone you talked to had a story of seeing the girl or at the very least of knowing someone who had seen it.

She is reportedly a cute little girl with bobbed black hair and she wears a little red schoolgirl skirt. She usually has to be invited and it is a common hazing to force to students to go to the third door and have them knock three times. It doesn’t happen every time but sometimes Hanaka will answer and ask the person to come in. If they open the door they may see Hanaka-san standing by the toilet.

Some people claim to have seen her but say that she vanished before she said or did anything else, other people say they witnessed her grabbing the querent, dragging them into the toilet and killing them in a violent and bloody manner.

She is a common feature in cartoons and movies even though nobody seems to know the story of the little girl who was killed or died to become this vengeful ghost. Hanaka-san was a common name for girls in the 1950s in Japan, where the legend seems to have originated from. Sometimes she isn’t’ happy to wait for someone to come to her and she will instead run through the bathroom opening doors, invading privacy and slamming doors shut.

jap2She has different guises or perhaps different spirits impersonate her MO because of her notoriety and fame. In Yamagata Prefecture they claim that there is no little girl there if you open the door, instead you will find a vicious, three headed lizard who will bite you and drag you down the toilet. In Iwate there is only a white hand that comes out of the toilet and in Kanagana the hand is stained with blood.

In other places there is another ghost, or perhaps it is Hanaka-san in another guise, she goes by the name of Kashima Reiko. Kashima Reiko translates roughly as: Dead person demon mask. A terrifying name for a terrifying apparition who has no legs. She drags herself through the washroom leaving a bloody trail behind her and calling out plaintively, “Where are my legs?”

If this isn’t enough to terrify even the most brave out of ever wanting to go to the washroom there is yet another ghost as well. This ghost is a boy and he lives in the last stall in the girls bathroom (there aren’t many stalls left for the living!). If you are unfortunate enough to open the door and see him standing there he will offer you toilet paper, but you must pick a color: Red or Blue.

jap3Either way he has no intention of letting you live. If you choose red he will cut the hapless victim with a blade on their back and neck to give them an appearance of wearing a red cape. If you choose blue he will strangle or hang you to death.

People report mixed results of telling him ‘neither’ or ‘both’. Some say it angers him further and he does still worse things to his victims. Others say that finding the correct clever thing to say flummoxed him just long enough to give them time to escape… and to tell their story.

Investigation and Research Teams: Dealing with the Living

t1by Virginia Carraway Stark

An important part of leading or being a member of any paranormal investigative team is how you handle the living. It is unlikely that ghosts are going to calling and asking you to come over and have a look at them. What is going to happen is that living people who may be scared, excited or outright hysterical and terrified are going to be calling you and you need to deal with them first and foremost in any investigation.

You need to be aware that you are likely going to be going into someone’s house or onto their land. You are in their space and you need to be polite and professional. If you are under the delusion that you are on a television show and want to act out and play things up or be rude to people then please reconsider your choice to be a paranormal investigator. Much of what is shown on television is done for shock value and is likely staged. When you are dealing with real people who believe they are haunted, possessed or worse, then you need to be extra sensitive to taking their heightened feelings into account. This investigation is not about you and it’s not about being the ‘star’ of anything. When you are investigating, nothing is about you, it is all about the research and the clients who have trusted you.

You are being invited into someone’s life and entrusted with their problems. This is a position that you must never abuse. You must be as honest as possible with your clients about your limitations as an investigator and you must not try to solve problems that you can’t solve or make promises that you can’t keep.

t2Fundamentally you need to be aware that you are providing a service. By definition, this makes you in the service industry. This doesn’t mean that the customer is always right, but it does mean that you are making a commitment to try to work with your clients and to satisfy their requirements. Be aware of how people are reacting to you. Are they stand-offish? Do they open up to you? Analyze their body language and how open they are to you in their demeanor. The more open they are the more likely they will be to give you the information you require to do a competent and professional job.

Try to think of the situation from your client’s perspective. How would you feel in their situation. Be honest with yourself and apply that to your dealings with your living clients.

If you find people are having a bad reaction to your approach it’s time to re-evaluate how you interact with other people. Your people skills will contribute at least an equal part to your success as a paranormal investigator as your knowledge of the paranormal and the actual investigations that you do.

Dust Is Everywhere

When people are asked why the orb in their photo is paranormal and not just a dust particle, many answer with “The house was clean. There was no dust.”

The problem with this explanation is that dust is everywhere. If there is an atmosphere, there is dust. It does not matter how clean an environment is, there are always airborne dust particles.

Some scientist and industrial companies spend thousands of dollars on air filtration systems to try and create a dust free environment. While they are able to remove a very high percentage of dust contamination with these systems, they still will not cannot guarantee that there is absolutely no dust particles in the air.

I recorded the video demonstration attached to this article with my iPhone 5s. Immediately prior to this recording, I had vacuumed my entire home. All I do here is pound the carpet, and many dust particles are seen flying around.

In a typical investigation situation, people are walking around the environment, which can stir up dust, even in a clean house.

Delphine LaLaurie

d1Delphine LaLaurie is among the most notorious figures of her time in New Orleans. Born Marie Delphine McCarty in 1787 to Creole parents, Delphine created a reputation for herself from a young age when she had a scandalous affair with and was made to marry the Governor’s second in command, who was nearly three times her age – the first of three marriages. Her entire name reads like a soap opera character: Madame Marie Delphine McCarty Lopez LeBlanc LaLaurie, a larger than life name for a larger than life woman. Details of Delphine’s life do vary from source to source.

Delphine, or simply ”Madame”, despite her colorful youth, became a popular socialite, known for her lavish parties, sometimes three in a week. In the early 1830’s, Delphine and her third husband, Dr. Leonard Louis LaLaurie (“Louis”) moved into the grand house on Royal St. Louis was significantly younger than Delphine, and this afforded her authority over her husband nearly unheard of at the time. She required him to sign a prenuptial agreement, as she had wealth from the deaths of her previous husbands, and Louis was a young doctor trying to establish a name for himself.

Growing up in a family with numerous slaves, Delphine and Louis were said to have had up to 54 slaves. While Delphine was known speak gently to her house slaves in front of her society friends, neighbors slowly grew to hear, and later to see, that when the parties were over, her demeanor changed dramatically. “It was said that Mme. LaLaurie’s manners were sweet, gracious and captivating. She was born in the society’s upper circles. She was accustomed to and acculturated to the good life. Yet there were persistent rumors that she treated her servants with disdain and in a cruel, abusive manner. And still, those who visited her said that she was kind to her servants. If one of them tremble in her presence or startled at the sound of her voice, she would soothe and endeavor to reassure her. Nevertheless, the stories of barbarity increased. The smothered indignation on Royal Street grew.” [2] Delphine has been widely considered to be mentally unstable, flying into fits of rage over insignificant issues, and an extreme sadist.

d2Details of what prompted the following vary, but in 1833 a young slave girl is said to have run through the house, with Delphine giving chase, to the third floor and flung herself off the balcony rather than face her mistress’ wrath. She died from the fall, and the LaLauries put her body in the well. This was when neighbors started to take notice. While slaves were not treated well by any means, brutality in proper society was not tolerated. The police were notified, and the girl’s body found in the well. Delphine was fined $300 and forced to sell the majority of her slaves. Being quite clever, she sold them to relatives, who secreted them back to the LaLaurie Mansion. Rumors spread about an attic chamber of torture, where slaves with whom Madame was displeased were taken, but from which they did not return. Neighbors noted screams coming from the lavish home. Not long after these events, the full truth of her sadistic treatment of her slaves would become public knowledge.

On April 10, 1834 an elderly slave who served as the LaLauries’ cook and was chained to the stove reportedly set fire to the house in an attempt to commit suicide. She had angered Madame and was willing to die rather than be sent to the attic. [1] While Madame and Doctor LaLaurie were legally separated at the time of the fire, Louis was in the mansion on the night of the fire. As the neighbors rushed to help, witness reported that Delphine rushed around the house rescuing her valuables. Neighbors asked about the slaves; where were they? Delphine reportedly told neighbors, “never mind the servants. Fetch my valuables.” [2]

d3Those who came to help, including a judge, began demanding the keys to the attic, “known to the neighbors …as a prison and that it was then tenanted by several unfortunate slaves.” [3] Louis Lalaurie… replied that “there are those who would be better employed if they would attend to their own affairs instead of officiously intermeddling with the concerns of other people.”[ibid] Breaking down the door, rescuers found an apparent torture chamber with starved, brutalized slaves. Some were old women wearing spiked iron collars; others chained into crippling positions. Judge Canonge, among the rescuers, gave a deposition which was published in the newspaper describing what he witnessed: “slaves, more or less horribly mutilated…. [Some were] suspended by the neck with their limbs stretched and torn from one extremity to the other.’ They found ‘an elderly negress,’…with a ‘deep wound on her head.’ A man had a “large hole in his head, his body [covered] from head to foot with scars and filled with worms.” [3,4] Reportedly Dr. LaLaurie, who specialized in osteopathy, performed medical experiments on slaves, most notably revealed by a slave whose bones were broken and reset in positions that resulting in resemblance to a crab.

d4The LaLauries’ former society friends ran them out of town, reportedly calling for their heads. They reportedly escaped to Paris, where Delphine died in 1842. [1] Rumors have Madame secreting back to New Orleans, still oblivious to her crimes, though there is no proof of this. Of the up to 54 slaves owned by Delphine, only 11 were rescued, leading to much speculation regarding the fate of the others, during a time when slave records were meticulously maintained. The LaLauries never faced charges. Delphine’s body is buried in St. Louis Cemetery #1 in a tomb belonging to her son.

Human remains are reported to have been found in the floorboards and grounds dating to the 19th century. The LaLaurie Mansion is considered by many to be New Orleans’ most haunted house, and even rumored to be cursed. [3,4] Subsequent owners have suffered death, insanity, and financial issues. A well-known actor purchased the mansion in 2007 for over three million dollars, and was forced to take a sizable loss when it went into foreclosure only 2 years later. While this actor claims to have experienced no paranormal activity, others report guests fainting, shadows, mists, thumping, moaning, screams of the tortured slaves, sightings of Madame herself. Many state that the little slave girl repeatedly throws herself from the third floor balcony, in apparent residual fashion. It is easy to believe that, given the abject horror of the LaLaurie’s barbaric behavior, that some of these souls may not be at rest. Granted using our due diligence, these claims can be debunked; however, this remains a case where the truth is truly stranger than fiction.

Ideomotor Effect

o1The human brain is a truly amazing organ. It can cause other body parts to perform tasks on command, such as closing the door (volition). It is also capable of so many things, some of which we are not even aware. Consider all the functions our brains performs without the slightest reminders from our consciousness (excitomotor actions): breathing, heartbeat, controlling body temperature and blood pressure, organ function. Similarly, survival instincts such as fight or flight, pulling your hand away from fire (sensorimotor actions) your brain does instinctively. [3] There are myriad other things our brains do on their own that are not life maintaining: blushing, tearing up, that silly grin you can’t suppress when that certain someone is around, fear responses. This article focuses on some other things our brains are up to in certain situations, without our conscious being aware. Let’s explore…the Ideomotor Effect.

In the Victorian Era, the paranormal had become all the rage…with that popularity came those who sought to make money from it. It was a time known for séances, Ouija, table tilting and others. The most noted and hotly debated (today, that is) is the Ouija. Let’s start there. At the Ouija’s height of popularity, the average life expectancy was 50; mothers died giving birth; people wanted to talk to their loved ones. Ouija was even consulted in solving crimes. In the 1920’s troubled financial times, Ouija was used to ask about prospects of an upturn. There was a board in nearly every house. [ibid] Later popularity waned, coinciding with the rising knowledge of the scientific data proving the game was just that – a game, not a valid means of speaking with the dead. The truth of the matter is that the science proving that Ouija is not paranormal was developed by physiologist William Carpenter in 1852, nearly 40 years before the Ouija was even patented in 1891, though used in Europe prior. Ouija remained a benign parlor game associated with nothing negative. [1,3,5]

02Today, the mere mention of Ouija boards sparks a firestorm of debate. Have you ever wondered where the idea that Ouija were evil originated? I certainly did. Hang onto your hats, folks! In 1973, the movie “The Exorcist” took the box office by storm; the story of a girl possessed after playing with Ouija. Almost immediately, the public began cries of Ouija is evil and summons demons. [5] Who knew? Funny how so many people put more stock in fictional movies and television shows than they do hard, proven science. My team has been called to ritualistically destroy Ouija boards for people – all because of a Hollywood created movie! Is it any wonder that National Paranormal Society does not discuss movies or television on the Facebook group?

The “forces” truly at work using an Ouija also apply to many other methods used by some in the paranormal world, including dowsing rods, pendula, automatic writing, and table tilting. Similarly the same principle applies to some methods used in days both ancient and modern to “cure” certain conditions. For the purposes of this article, we will not address the pseudo-medical end if the topic. These “forces” are known as the ideomotor effect.

03As I mentioned in the introduction, our brain does many things without our conscious mind telling it to do so. Using the Ouija again as an example, participants lightly place their fingertips on the planchette, and someone asks a question. Everyone is excited and nervous. The planchette glides seemingly on its own with its soft felt-tipped feet to letters or one of the words on the board. We have an answer! Or do we? Because of the ideomotor effect, a participant’s nervousness/excitement, coupled with their subconscious mind causes nearly imperceptible muscle twinges which start the planchette along its course. The other participants, startled and excited by its movement – “I didn’t do it – follow the movement. This is how the ideomotor effect works. Please note that with ideomotor effect, the participant is not faking (fakery is another issue altogether); they are not conscious of their actions. [1,3,4,5] Prove it, you say? Absolutely! Try having your participants wear blindfolds. [1,3,4] I have personally seen this done. A session is conducted with participants all able to see the table and what is happening. A person associated to a participant is selected and a question asked of their spirit. Question answered. Now, the blindfolds…wait, why is the planchette landing in blank space or between letters now? Even the subconscious mind cannot see the letters anymore. Debunked!

04So what does the ideomotor effect have to do with the other items mentioned? Let’s start with dowsing rods. Again, the user is hopeful of finding what they seek; with rods it can be water, oil, gems, buried pipes, etc. as well as spirits. Answers come with movement of the rods. Human error aside (shaky hands, not holding the rods straight, etc.), the effect is the same. How do we know? Try subtly hinting at a location where you know the target to be, then where you know it NOT to be. Studies show that the user will get movement in agreement with whichever spot is indicated. As in the Ouija experiment, blindfolding the dowser will lead to meaningless indications. [1,3, 4] Again, this is due to the subconscious mind triggering miniscule muscle movement, which in turn causes the rods to move/cross. Table tilting is debunked in precisely the same manner as the Ouija board. Similarly with using a pendulum, which directions the user is told will indicate yes or no will trigger the subconscious mind to move the user’s hand in that direction. Automatic writing and even the latest “Charlie Charlie” (created solely for a movie) are explained in the same way; “the ideomotor effect causes small, unconscious motor movements because of the person’s expectations, preconceptions or suggestibility.” [3] Unaware of their brain’s actions, the results with all of the items discussed are attributed to some paranormal activity, spirit or demon.

“Once a belief is formed and reinforced, the believer does not usually ever give it up.” [3] Each time the planchette moves, rods cross, etc., it serves as positive reinforcement (a behavior modification term that simply means that the behavior of moving the planchette, for example, is rewarded, making it far more likely to occur again). Despite continually failing at blindfold and other objective, scientific testing, users cling to the belief that supernatural forces are at work. This continues no matter how much empirical evidence is presented, proving this thought process incorrect. “The ideomotor effect is a classic example of how we can be fooled by our senses and ourselves. Many people believe in things because they have experienced them for themselves; they trust in the perceived infallibility of their senses.” [3]

Mirror-touch Synthesia

m1In order to understand the topic of this article, we must first understand the term synesthesia. Synesthesia is defined as a perception of mixed sensations: stimulating one sense involuntarily causes a person to perceive it with another sense, for example a sound being perceived visually. [3] Synesthesia is usually a developmental condition, however recent research has shown that mirror touch synesthesia can be acquired after sensory loss following amputation. [2] There are several types of synesthesia, which have been recognized and studied for quite some times. Others are relatively new to the medical forefront, such as Mirror-Touch Synesthesia (herein referred to as MTS), which was first noted in 2005. Synesthesia are hereditary, passed through the X chromosome (females possess 2 X chromosomes and males 1); likewise, a person who has one type of synesthesia is likely to have other types as well. [1,2,3]

Mirror-Touch Synesthesia is a rare neurological condition in which the “synesthete” (person with synesthesia) physically feels what others experience. One example is that if another person is stroked on their arm, the individual with MTS would feel the sensation of their arm being stroked. [2] This condition has received attention recently due to a neurologist with the condition, Joel Salinas, MD a neurology resident at Harvard Medical School. Salinas in one noted example, physically felt the sensation of his tapping a patient’s knee to test reflexes, despite the patient showing no clear reflexes. [1]

One can imagine the difficulty that Dr. Salinas must face every day, being a neurologist and working with people suffering from dystonias (disorders of muscle tone/spasticity), stroke, multiple sclerosis, etc. One early synesthete reportedly witnessed a man being punched and passed out in her car. [1] MTS for many can be debilitating. Imagine having this condition and witnessing a fatal car accident or murder. Some synesthetes become homebound, even unable to watch television lest they have a physical reaction to what they are watching. Studies show that the intensity of the stimulus does correlate to the intensity of the perceived sensation by the synesthete. For example, a touch vs. a punch. [2] When Salinas performs a spinal tap on a patient, he can feel the needle going into his own lower back. “When a psychotic patient goes into a rage, Salinas feels himself getting worked up. Even when patients die, Salinas feels an involuntary glimmer of the event firsthand. His body starts to feel vacant—empty, like a limp balloon.” [1]

m2MTS “has aroused significant interest among neuroscientists in recent years because it appears to be an extreme form of a basic human trait. In all of us, mirror neurons in the premotor cortex and other areas of the brain activate when we watch someone else’s behaviors and actions. Our brains map the regions of the body where we see someone else caressed, jabbed, or whacked, and they mimic just a shade of that feeling on the same spots on our own bodies. For mirror-touch synesthetes like Salinas, that mental simulacrum is so strong that it crosses a threshold into near-tactile sensation, sometimes indistinguishable from one’s own. Neuroscientists regard the condition as a state of ‘heightened empathic ability.’ “ [1] As you might guess from that quote, those with MTS have responses not only to physical stimulus of others, but also emotions. Studies show that persons with MTS “scored significantly higher…on reading social cues that indicated that a person was feeling confident, stressed, sad, perplexed, or mystified. They’ve also found that mirror-touch synesthetes tend to have a greater volume of gray matter in areas of the brain linked to social cognition and empathy, and less brain volume in the temporoparietal junction, which plays a key role in distinguishing self from other.” [1] Hence the relevance to National Paranormal Society.

MTS differs from other synesthesia in that it may be genetic in origin, or may develop following a trauma. Some amputees studied perceived stimulus of pain, touch, movement or cold, for example, in limbs which had been amputated. “Phantom pains” are reported by 98% of amputees. [1,2] Personally I recall a relative having excruciating pain in a leg that had been amputated due to complications of diabetes. Stroke patients with paralysis on one side rendered similar results.

Diagnosis of MTS depends on the presence of three criteria: 1) the synesthete’s response upon seeing another being touched must feel like a conscious sensation (i.e. not a delusion or imagination); 2) the responses are induced by a stimulus would not generally cause this response; 3) these sensations must be involuntary, i.e. not by conscious thought. [2] While quite rare, MTS is among the more prevalent types of synesthesia. It has two sub-types: one, a true mirror touch, where the sensation is felt on the opposite side as that of the person who actually receives the stimulus (as in a reflection), and the other in which the sensation is felt on the same side. [2]

MTS is a relatively new condition which places scientific research and data in the form of brain-mapping, and the relative mass of certain areas of the brain governing traits collectively assigned to empaths, with neuroscientists describing it as basically a hyper-sensitive form of physical and emotional empathy. MTS is still being studied; however, the results thus far are fascinating.

Demons in Buddhism

There are many supernatural beings in Buddhist literature. Many are referred to as demons. Demons serve many purposes in Buddhism which gives us a different aspect of how they affected Buddha and his struggles to reach enlightenment. Demons represent everything a Buddhist wishes to transcend.

Ancient artworks depict vivid and ominous images. These likenesses have been found in long abandoned caves in the Himalayas; beautiful murals on their walls. Colorful paintings, sculptures and ceremonial ritual objects that are found in museums. All attest to the Buddha’s confrontations with demons.

The Wrathful Deities – are ferocious demonic beings. Terrifying forms, many of them baring fangs, drinking blood or wearing garlands of severed heads. Though these hideous, hair-raising images seem contradictory to Buddhist ideals, they are not the personifications of evil or demonic forces. Rather, the Wrathful Deities are benevolent gods, symbolizing the tremendous task to vanquish evil. These beings inspire determination, destroys negativity and ignorance and instills fear in the enemy. These deities are an embodiment of the “Demonic Divine” and serve as protectors and guardians of the Buddhist faith.

q3Oni – the Oni are great horned demons who appear in a variety of colors. They have three fingers and three toes. Oni is represented as having enormous, thick, misshaped bodies often having the head of an oxen or horse. Sometimes they can be found with three eyes, as well. This demon is a torturer and jailer in the Buddhist hell. Oni is responsible for illness and disease. Buddhist priests performed annual rituals in order to keep the demons at bay. The Oni are cruel and lecherous entities often said to swoop down from the sky to steal the souls of those who lay dying.

Blue Three Eyed Oni

Preta – the Sanskrit word for Hungry Ghost is “Preta”, which means “departed one”. Hungry q2Ghosts are pitiful creatures with enormous empty bellies and pinhole mouths. Their necks are so thin they cannot swallow, so remain hungry. These beings are insatiable; the greedy ones, trapped in agony. The Preta are reborn entities or spirits that are trapped by the evil deeds they have done. Hungry Ghosts are associated with compulsion, greed, addiction and obsession. Preta Hell

Mara – the personification of evil and temptation. Mara is one of the earliest non-human beings to appear in Buddhist scriptures. Mara is a demon, often referred to as the “Lord of Death”. Mara personifies the fulfillment of desire of the “Triple Thirst”; the thirst for existence, the thirst for pleasure, the thirst for power.

Mara’s role in Buddha’s path to enlightenment is significant. The soon-to-be Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama sat in meditation. Mara, the demon of evil and temptation; the seducer; the provider of sensory pleasures; the master of delusions and bringer of spiritual death brought his three daughters, Desire, Fulfillment and Regret to seduce Siddhartha. Siddhartha remained in meditation. Then Mara called upon his army of demons and monsters to attack him. Yet Siddhartha remained untouched.

q1Finally, the Lord of Death claimed that enlightenment seat rightfully belonged to him and not to the mortal Siddhartha. Mara’s horde of demons cried out together, “I am his witness!” Then Mara challenged Siddhartha, “Who will speak for you?”

Mara Attacking Siddhartha

Then Siddhartha placed his right hand on the earth, and the earth spoke, “I bear you witness!” With that, Mara disappeared. As the morning sun broke the horizon, Siddhartha Gautama realized enlightenment and became the Buddha.

In contrast to western representations, the demons of Asia are primarily the powerful ancient spirits of nature, who require recognition and appeasement. Many offerings are set out to this day to placate these demons.

Belief of Djinn (Arabic for Genie) in the gaza area.

ga1By International rep Stephen Russell

Gaza is a region of the state of Palestine. It is on the east coast of Mediterranean Sea.
It is 41 kilometres( 25 miles)long.

The origin of the word is taken from the Arabic word for the semetic root.. Jann which means to hide.
The more know word of genie.. is derived from the French word for genius..which came from the Latin meaning of a guardian spirit.

They are said to have a social structure just like humans.. where there is monarchy and occasions such as weddings and mourning the departed.

ga2They are seen with some traditions as travelling in different forms..such as flying in air (vultures etc)..and snakes and dogs. Even dragons have there place with them.

In recent years at the town of deir al-balah have started to believe that genies are the cause of unexplained housefires in the town itself. The police in the region have stated that it is nothing more than scare mongering and have tried to down playdown the reports. But belief is still strong with these accounts.

The belief in genies has a long history in the region. A region that has a belief system of Fortune tellers and spiritual healing. One of a belief that genies can posses people at ease.

ga3Gaza has a strong Muslim population ,that has a strong belief in the paranormal and Djinn are actually mentioned in the qur’ran as supernatural creatures that are made of smoke or fire. The Muslim equivalent of “satan” is believed to be one also.

The belief has even led to exorcisms of what is believed to be genies. Contrary to the more western beliefs of exorcising due to chritianic demonic enterties.

The belief in genies here, is as strong as it was centuries ago.

Gabon

1by International rep Stephen Russell

Gabon (the Portuguese name of the Kome River) on the west coast of Africa is an independent state, also formally a french territory.

The country itself has diverse religious beliefs from Christianity, Bwiti to Animism and Islam. At least 5% of the population are considered Atheist in their beliefs. Raconteurs, who are story tellers, are working to keep the oral tradition of local folklore’s and legends alive within the culture.

The masks in Gabon culture, are designed for different beliefs in ceremonies depending on which tribe creates them. Made out of rare wood, or precious metals, they are internationally celebrated for there meanings and design. The masks are generally used in ceremonies such as births, weddings, or funerals. The Panu masks have their own use
of warding off evil spirits and witches. The concepts of life or death are very important in the meaning of the masks.

2When used in the appropriate rituals set to the coinciding music, the mask transforms a male performer into an ideal feminine beauty or a spiritual being, while the carved white mask depicts a serine woman. As funeral rites are performed after a death, the masks contrast the rigorous stilt dances that are performed at the same time.

Another tribal mask is native to the Ogoou’e river basin in the country .The pun-lumbo mask. They are highly collectible and considered valuable pieces of African art. They are oval shaped with narrow eyes, high eyebrows and small ears. The male masks are considered ugly by the local people, where the females are seen as more attractive they have been linked to female ancestry celebrations and funerary spirit ceremonies.

Denmark

dn1Denmark is the smallest of Scandinavian countries and occupies the Jutland peninsula. The country also consists of several islands in the Baltic Sea. Denmark is the smallest of the five nations in the Nordic region with a total land mass about the same size as Finnmark County in Norway. The country is a constitutional monarchy and its most important sources of revenue are oil, the medical industry, agrigultural produce and shipping and IT services. For more information on Denmark, go here: http://www.norden.org/…/the-nordic-coun…/facts-about-denmark
There are several reports of over 100 spirits within the castle walls of Draghsholm Castle but one of the more notable of the spirits is known as James Hepburn, the Earl of Bothwell. Hepburn was captured by the Norwegians (whom ruled that was then Denmark-Norway) in the mid 1500s. He was imprisoned at the Dragsholm castle and during which, the seclusion had made him mad. Given barely enough food and water to survive, he was eventually tied to a pillar and left to die. Guests today report seeing Hepburn on horseback, and and many visitors have heard the hooves of horses beating on the cobbled yard. During the 1930’s a skeleton in a white dress was discovered within a small space in the castle walls by workmen. She is believed to be Celine, the daughter of the noble Bovles family. Celina fell in love with a commoner and had become pregnant. This angered her father and he held her as a prisoner in one of the castle’s dungeons. This could explain the apparitions of the “white lady.” In the 12th century, the Bishop of Roskilde, Peder Sunsen designed Dragsholm. The last bishop of Roskilde, Joachim Ronnow was imprisoned in his own castle in 1436. Some speculate that his spirit still haunts the Dragsholm’s tower where his captivity had begun.

Just recently, the Denmark ministry of defense had released over 15,000 UFO sighting archives from over the last 30 years and have also set up a link where you can download accounts of the historic UFO sightings, click here to visit that site: http://www2.forsvaret.dk/Pages/forside.aspx The observations of the UFO sightings vary from China lamps, a bright planet, and other natural occurrences to what is known as the “flying gople.” The air force has stated that most sightings do remain unidentified due to a lack of precise details and some reports have ruled out aircraft and weather phenomena. One curious report occurred on January 5th 1981 at about 12:50 which states a flaming square disc was spotted about 45 degrees over frozen land neat the Thule Air Base. It had vanished as fast as it had appeared; coincidentally radar stations at the American base had recorded an unidentified flying object off their radar also at 12:50.

dn2If so far Denmark seems to offer much a mystery, then it should come as no surprise that the mysterious Sealand Skull was discovered by workers replacing sewer pipes in Ølstykke in 2007. The skull’s discovery didn’t make any immediate headlines nor was it acknowledged by science until 2010. Researchers examined the skull at a Veterinarian high school in Copenhagen concluded that “although resembling a mammal, certain features make it impossible to fit the animal into Linnaean taxonomy.”

Since we have already discussed the discovery of a skeleton at the Draghsholm Castle and a mysterious skull discovered, let’s take a look at Denmark’s 2,000 year old army of several hundred ancient warriors that have been discovered in a bog in the Alken Enge wetlands. The remains seem to tell a story of an entire army’s sacrifice. Some of the remains include a fractured skull and a sliced thighbone. Also unearthed at the site were well preserves axes, spears, clubs and shields. The area in which the excavation has taken place is so massive that archaeologists don’t believe they will ever excavate all of what remains. It is believed that these warriors lost a battle to an opposing tribe.

If occult is in your interest then you will be fascinated to learn that “if ever Denmark is in great danger, from his enchanted sleep Holger Danske will rise and the table to which his beard has grown will split in twain, as he can sleep no more in Denmark needs aid”. *quoted from the encyclopaedia of superstitions, folklore, and the occult sciences by Charles McClellan Stevens Danse is regarded as a Danish national symbol, he is also called Oger Le Danois, his name being the only link to Denmark. Danish national author Hans Christian Andersen had in 1845 written the fairy tale Holger Danse where he was described as sitting fast asleep with his beard having grown into the table in front of him and his sword in his lap, prepared to wake up to action in case Denmark had been threatened by outside forces.

Denmark has also more than 500 years of scientific research which provides the foundations of the Danish society as we know it today. One of the most well known inventions to come out of Denmark was Google Maps invented by brothers Jens and Lars Rasmussen. This technology is used all over the world and is one of the most popular go-to mapping services today. So while in Denmark looking for the next haunted location, just remember the Google Maps originated there and you will be sure to find your location as easy as a click.

dn3Finally, if you are looking for any hot spots while in Denmark, I would first start with Copenhagan at Dana Cup where reports claim a little boy was killed playing soccer and reportedly returns to haunt the area. Also be sure to route your way over to Dragsholm castle and see if you can have an encounter with the reported 100 ghosts that lurk within. Perhaps you could bare witness to the white lady, or even James Hepburn or the little boy in Copenhagan.

Haunted Netherlands

n4The Netherlands is a country about the size twice that of New Jersey located in the Northwestern section of Europe. The country neighbors Germany, Belgium, and the North Sea. According to encyclopedia.com, the land area of the Netherlands increases slightly each year as a result of continuous land reclamation and drainage. In its recent years, the country’s government has placed an increased emphasis on preservation due to economic growth. The nation is also known to have one of the world’s highest levels of industrial carbon dioxide emissions although continued efforts take place to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions. Its rivers also suffer from severe pollution due to agricultural and industrial waste. The major spoken languages of the country are Dutch and Frisian (Frisian is closely related to AngloSaxon tongue with a bit of Dutch in it.) Most residents of the Netherlands as well understand English, French and German.

n3In recent years; the Dutch society has become increasingly secular with a steady decline of church memberships. Roman Catholic religion is said to be the most popular religions followed by Dutch reformed, Muslim, Calvinist Reformists, Hindu, Jewish and Buddhist but the largest group of people report to be atheist or agnostic. At about the 16th century, the Dutch Reformed Church originated during the time of the Protestant Reformation under the influence of Calvinistic teachings. The Dutch Reform paranormal belief is the the spirits are actually malevolent who are deceitful as commanded by Satan. They named them demons, evil spirits and even unclean spirits. Similar churches around the same time holding the same theological views were also founded in France, Switzerland, Germany, Hungary, England and Scotland. Though the church was never considered a Dutch state church, the law demanded that all of its public officials be a member. In 1815, the Kingdom of the Netherlands was established in which the church has become more centralized. The new government then imposed new rules and regulations which placed the church under royal control allowing the king to appoint the church head up until 1852. By 1853, the church and the state were completely separated. This church remained the largest church until the mid 20th century when it was surpassed by the Roman Catholic Church.

Participants from the Netherlands were chosen from a paranormal fair and asked to participate in a study related to the fringe sciences which focused on materials and methods. The participants first were instructed to view a set of 38 black and white pictures of faces and houses that consisted of different levels visual noise in each. The point of this test was to study the neural correlates of perceptual decision making. After completing this task, the participants were asked to fill in a questionnaire form about the paranormal at their own pace. Later a regression analysis was conducted in which the effect of paranormal beliefs on accuracy was investigated after controlling for demographic variables such as gender, age and education. You can read more about this experiment and more by following this link: http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article…

n2In the province of Drenth exists a 5,000 year old monument of huge granite stones known as the Hunebedden in which huge granite rocks are rested on top of smaller rocks. The belief is that simple farmers had moved these large boulders to Drenthe to construct a large burial chamber. It is theorized in 1857 by King Frederic VII of Denmark that they selected boulders found with a flat side, some of which had to be dug out from the sand. The stones were then placed on wooden rollers or sleds by use of levers and manpower did the rest. The curious thing about the structure is that similar structures can be found throughout the world in locations including Germany, Massachussetts, Sicily, Italy, Africa, France India, Korea, Ireland and Spain. These structures are known as Dolmens.

A controversial photo of U.F.O. Over the Netherlands surfaced in 2013 by amateur photographer Corinne Federer. Federer was taking pictures outside of the Muiderslot castle in succession when she managed to capture a tubular shaped object that appears to have an S-shaped fin. Federer claims that she hadn’t noticed the object until reviewing the photos later. This is what she told the Huffington Post: “It was a tubular-shaped object that had an S-shaped fin on it. If it had been any type of missile, it would’ve had multiple fins, but facing the same direction. We heard nothing, it was completely quiet out. The more I flipped through the frames, it was kind of creepy,I’ve been shooting for quite some time and I’ve seen other stuff in the news, but I’ve never seen anything [like this] with my own eye.”

In Amsterdam, Netherlands you can find Anne Frank’s secret annex. It is believed that you can feel cold spots in certain areas of the room and sometimes while walking around towards nightfall, you may be able to see a figure of a young girl. Also in Amsterdam you can find the bell tower which is said that a boy dressed in early 20th century period clothing walks up the flight of stairs and disappears. The most notable of haunted locations in the Netherlands exists in Waardenberg at the Waardenberg castle. At night an unseen spirit will travel the stairs and in some rooms you can hear whispering voices, and toilets flushing in an area where there isn’t a toilet. On the east wing there is a room known as the ghost room where objects are said to move by themselves. You can also travel the house and notice cold drafts in some parts. It is said that human bodies were found in its cellars. It is also said that medieval wizard Dr. Faust had lived at the castle and was supposedly taken to hell from the location by the devil himself. At the location in its window exists two hand prints made of blood that can’t be washed, perhaps the marks left behind by silent witnesses of the happening.

n1Near the river Scheldt in Antwerp it was once believed that Druon Antigoon, a giant would sit by the river and charge a toll in order to cross. If any traveler should refuse to pay the toll, Druon Antigoon would proceed to cut their hand off and toss it into the river. The giant was later defeated by a Roman soldier by the name of Silvius Brabo who managed to cut off the giant’s hand in combat and toss it into the same river that Druon Antigoon would toss the severed hands of nonpaying travelers.

Haunted Russia

r1Russia is known as the largest country in the world, and is said to take up 1/6th of the earth’s land mass and consists of every type of climate except tropical. Though the climate is varied, Russia’s Winters are long and cold and the Summers seasons are brief. The coldest recorded temperatures have been recorded in the eastern Siberian tundra at -68 C (-90 F) The European and Asiatic Russia are traditionally divided by the Ural mountains. Half of Russia is covered with great pine forests and south of these forests are prairies that consist of rich and dark soil. Just south of the prairies exist a subtropical zone just along the shores of the Black and Caspian seas. The majority of the ethic Russian Federation is eastern Slavic, though the federation is a multi-ethnic state that consists of more than 100 ethnic groups, some of which are Eskimos. Russian is the common language in the country’s government and education though most groups are distinguished by their own language and culture.

The majority of today’s Russian religion belongs to the Orthodox Christian denomination, in which, the country adopted Christianity under Prince Vladimir of Kiev in 988 during a ceremony pattered on Byzantine rites. Russia’s baptism then laid the foundations for the rise of the Russian Orthodox Church. In the 17th century, the Patriarch of Moscow and Russia (1652-1658) had made vigorous attempts to modify church rites. His reforms had eventually led to a religious split and emergence of the Old Belief. This survived in Russia until the early 18th century when in 1718, Peter the Great had introduced collective control into the Russian Church. His innovation had worked until 1721 when the Ecclesiastical College was transformed into a ruling Holy Synod which was instituted as an administrative entity of church power of the Russian Orthodox Church. By 1917, the local council of the Russian Orthodox Church adopted resolutions that restored patriarchal rule. By 1990 many laws were passed on the freedom of religion under which many of the existing restrictions were removed, allowing them to step up to their activities. For much more information of Russia’s history and current religion, I encourage you to visit http://www.newzealand.mid.ru/religion-in-russia.htm According to Brian P. Bennett, (author of Religion and Language in Post-Soviet Russia); the Church Slavonic which is part of the post-Soviet landscape is where the interest in Slavic prehistory, and the trend towards alternative history, conspiracy theories, and paranormal phenomena converge. Beliefs about the mysterious nature of letters have a long history not only in Christianity as a whole but specifically in Russian Orthodoxy. The Orthodox discourse has been joined by other forms of the alphabetic mysticism, often in combination with conspiracy theories of Russian history. Some Orthodox nationalists believe the country is under the spell of Jewish Kabbalah. Some new age discourses suggest that modern Cyillic alphabet is the master-plan of the universe, a kind of cosmic table of events; others claim it as the oldest alphabet in the world, and that all writing systems—including Egyptian hieroglyphics—ultimately derive from it.
In the 20th century, Russia was said to had spent about 60 million rubles annually on psychotronic research. In 1984, Russian healer Djuna Davitashvili participated in a 10,000 mile remote viewing experiment with Russell Targ. She was given the task of describing where a colleague would be hiding in San Francisco in which she had to focus her attention ten thousand miles and two hours into the future to correctly describe his location. While the experiments were performed, they were under the control of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Djuna hit the mark on all counts and the experiment was declared a resounding success.

r3In recent history, a team of archaeologists discovered a well preserved mummy which was believed to belong to a lost civilization is Northern Russia that dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries. The archaeologists speculate that these remains could be that of a teenager or even a child, though they have yet to open the coffin. The recovered remains were were discovered wrapped in birch bark containing copper, in which, when combined with the freezing conditions had created a tomb. According to Alexander Gusev, fellow of the Research Center for the Study of Arctic; “The mummification was natural. It was a combination of factors: the bodies were overlain with copper sheets, parts of copper kettles, and together with the permafrost, this it gave the preserving effect.” In 2014 more mummies were discovered at Zeleniy Yar in Siberia in 34 shallow graves. 11 of the bodies which were discovered in the medieval burial place had either smashed skeletons or missing and shattered skulls. The belief is that this new discovery is linked to these bodies and is part of a lost civilization.

r2Russia has recently claimed that they can predict when a UFO will appear in the skies above them and they’ve also learned how to summon them. Major General of FIB in reserve, academician of the Academy of Security, Defense and Law Enforcement went on record saying “We can say that we learned to summon UFOs in Vladimirovka. To do this, we dramatically increased the number of military flights and movement of the equipment. If the intensity on our side increased, UFOs appeared with the probability of 100 percent.” Russia’s Navy has recently declassified records of numerous encounters with unidentified objects. According to Vladimir Azhazha, a UFO researcher and former Military Naval Officer; “Fifty percent of UFO encounters are connected with oceans. Fifteen more—with lakes. So UFOs tend to stick to the water.” More information about the declassified records can be found here: http://www.wired.com/…/russian-navy-declassifies-cold-war-…/

One of Russia’s most haunted sites is the Kremlin where in recent times the president of Russia has had his offices which is located in Moscow. It is believed that among the spirits of the Kremlin are Tsar Ivan The Terrible whom reigned Russia in the 16th century; Vladimir Lenin, who led the 1917 Bolsevik Revolution; and the notorious Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. The hauntings range from eyewitness sightings to hearing footsteps and even cold spots. The most frr4equent of the experiences in the Kremlin are of Joseph Stalin in which his spirit typically appears when Russia is hit by deep crisis. The signs of Stalin’s hauntings usually begin when the room suddenly gets cold for no explainable reason. Outside of Kremlin’s hauntings, an archive notes from the 19th century that claims of a strange object had been seen above the Kremlin. It appeared to stop before a sudden flash of light lit up the sky. It then flew up and away. Some modern observers suggest that these accounts similar those of modern UFO sightings.
In 2008, several Russian websites surfaced with photos of the cryptid creature known as the Giant Triops. This is the story that accompanied the photos: “Look what they have found in Chelyabinsk city. The story is that there was a construction site with a deep foundation ditch. They have touched some underground river in the place, so the water in the ditch didn’t go away. It stayed there full of water. Then, some workers a few months later spotted some movement in this water. They threw some pieces of their lunch in the trench, which caused big activity inside. They were puzzled. Who is there? And then they caught one of the creatures. In a panic, the workers stepped away because it tried to bite them. They had to kill it with some equipment, and here are the remains of it. It was around 5 feet long. Not one of them had any idea of what it was.” Some possible explanations suggest that a triops may had been exposed to radiation though they aren’t native to the area. There has also been speculation that the creature was maybe a horseshoe crab, however, the surfaced photos clearly show a triops of an enormous size. Typically, the triops are a tiny species (the largest being only a few inches long.) If you observe the original photos that surfaced in 2008, the creature pictured is beside a manhole cover, and unless the cover is fake, you can clearly see that this creature was well over 5′.

Greece

g3Greece is a country in South Eastern Europe (Known in ancient times as Hellas) . The Greek population is around 10.8 million and the capital city is Athens.

The Haunted Houses of Athens.

Over several areas of the city is said to be a hotbed of paranormal activity with various houses in the Greek capital has had several witness accounts of strange activity.

The Tower Of Dreams has been abandoned for a long time is said to be visited by the previous owner who was said to an ambitious and greedy man (a type of Greek Scrooge). Witnesses have reported hearing a man screaming “IT IS MY HOUSE”.

The House Of The Disinherited Sisters. This was the home of 3 spinsters, people have reported seeing apparitions of these women around the house and sometimes seen looking out the windows.

g1On of the locations I found the most intriguing is “The Villa Kazouli”. This house was used in the 2nd world war by the Germans to torture Greek soldiers and in an excavation, 12 bodies were unearthed in the garden. Eyewitness accounts have heard screams coming from the house as well as seeing shadow figures moving around the area.
Historically Greece has been a hotbed of UFO activity, most notable was an encounter a pilot on flight 266 from Athens to London in 2008. The pilot reported seeing a bright object in sky, the object was noted to be changing its position several times and was only reported by the pilot to the control because he was concerned the object was going to collide with the plane. After the flight left the airspace, the control tower continued to monitor the object ( it was reported it could be seen by the naked eye). The Greek air force were also monitoring the object and launched 2 f-16 jets to intercept the object while they continued to monitor it from their control tower. It transpired that the f-16s couldn’t track the object and returned with no further information. The Greek national news channel broadcast the radio conversation between the pilot and the control tower a month later.

g2A recent photograph of a strange sea creature was photographed off the coast of Corfu by Scotsman Harvey Robertson while he took in a boat trip while on holiday on the Greek Island. The photo was analysed Loren Coleman director if the “International Crypto Museum” said it could be a configuration a type of behavioural restructuring of the bodyform of a mundane species like a squid for example, not usually seen.

The Eleusinian is probably the most famous ancient mysteries and occults in Greece. The cult/religion was celebrated in the city of Eleusis to honour Ceres and Persepne.

The people of the Eleusinian School were famous throughout Greece for their beauty and their high standards of morality. The rites if Eleusis were divided into 2 categories, the lesser and the greater mysteries. The lesser were celebrated in the spring in the town of Agrae and the greater in the autumn at Eleusis or Athens. Women and children were admitted to the Eleusinian Mysteries, and at one time there were literally thousands of initiates. Because this vast host was not prepared for the highest spiritual and mystical doctrines, a division necessarily took place within the society itself. The higher teachings were given to only a limited number of initiates who, because of superior mentality, showed a comprehensive grasp of their underlying philosophical concepts. Socrates refused to be initiated into the Eleusinian Mysteries, for knowing its principles without being a member of the order he realized that membership would seal his tongue. That the Mysteries of Eleusis were based upon great and eternal truths is attested by the veneration in which they were held by the great minds of the ancient world. M. Ouvaroff asks, “Would Pindar, Plato, Cicero, Epictetus, have spoken of them with such admiration, if the hierophant had satisfied himself with loudly proclaiming his own opinions, or those of his order?”

The garments in which candidates were initiated were preserved for many years and were believed to possess almost sacred properties. Just as the soul can have no covering save wisdom and virtue, so the candidates–being as yet without true knowledge–were presented to the Mysteries unclothed, being first: given the skin of an animal and later a consecrated robe to symbolize the philosophical teachings received by the initiate. During the course of initiation the candidate.

Poland’s Auschwitz and The Paranormal

p1In a country where atrocities such as the German regimes concentration camps of WWII, one can only wonder if the scars of yesterday left a paranormal marker for today’s paranormal inquisitors.

Auschwitz concentration camp was a network of German Nazi concentration camps and extermination camps built and operated
by the Third Reich in Polish areas during World War II. Being of Polish ethnicity and only 2nd generation American, the paranormal findings of this camp holds a special interest for me. my Father served in the war and saw the horror first hand as he would tell us stories of his time spent there and some of my family visited this camp first hand which is now a World Heritage Site. At least 1.1 million prisoners died at Auschwitz, around 90 percent of them Jewish.

p2Currently Poland consists of many beliefs, however the majority of its population adheres to Christianity. Within this, the largest grouping is the Catholic Church with 87.5% of Poles in 2011 identifying themselves as Roman Catholic which is higher than any other European country. Some believe this religious statistic to be because of the concentration camps as Poland has a lineage to it’s Jewish heritage.

Poland lies in eastern Europe on the Baltic Sea and has a strong architectural medieval flair. The people are artsy and intricately woven to their thousand year history. Poland is proud of it’s achievements and now stands as a highly developed country. According to nations encyclopedia “Poland’s average altitude is 568 ft; 75.4% of the land is less than 656 ft above sea level. The highest point, Mount Rysy (2,499 m/8,199 ft), is located in the Tatra Mountains on the Slovakian border.”

p3Auschwitz lies approximately 37 miles west of Krakow near the prewar German-Polish border in Upper Silesia, an area that Nazi Germany annexed in 1939 after invading and conquering Poland and was the largest of its’ kind. According to the American Holocaust Museum, ” The SS authorities established three main camps near the Polish city of Oswiecim: Auschwitz I in April 1940; Auschwitz II (also called Auschwitz-Birkenau) in October 1941; and Auschwitz III (also called Auschwitz-Monowitz) in October 1942.”

This is a first hand account by my Brother upon returning home from his trip to the camp back in 1979, he stated, “It was the most depressing place I have visited during my stay. The smell of death lingers in the air as if it wraps its’ arms around you, dragging you in to feel the sadness that occurred there. There were claw marks from those contained in the gas chambers upon the cement walls, I felt a tear roll down my cheek. I did not feel as if they ever left, meaning the spirits of those departed.”

p4As I searched for paranormal information on Auschwitz, I found my Brother’s thoughts were not unfounded. It seems he is not alone on his feelings. the personal blog of heparanormalblogging.blogspot.com/…/auschwitz-most-haunted-…, also felt the despair of the
gas chamber. It is also noted that visitors to this camp have captured pictures and videos of strange forms in the gas chambers, also some visitors have noticed cold spots and the feel of being touched by in non-existent hands.

In the small gift shop located in this dim dark remembrance of a time best left laid to rest, they sell small flowers to place throughout Auschwitz
as the Poles believe flowers calm the spirits that roam the halls. From screams heard and cold spots, to the gripping almost unnerving feel of death that haunts this place, I can only imagine if any place could be haunted this would be high on the top ten list.
