Mel Meters – A comparison

Mel-8704R-KII-SDDThe ‘Mel Meter is a dual purpose combination unit that measures both EMF (Electromagnetic Field) and Temperature simultaneously. The Mel Meter was designed and developed by Gary Galka of DAS Distribution Inc. Gary lost his oldest of three daughters, Melissa. After Melissa’s passing, some incredible things started to happen to Gary and his family. Melissa began to make her presence known through numerous ADC’s (after death communications) to Gary and his family. Gary designed the Mel Meter as a way to communicate with his daughter whom Gary says helped with the healing process.

The device is named after his daughter ‘Mel’ and the model number is her year of birth 87 and her year of passing 04 – “Mel-8704”. For a long time there have been theories that spirits can manipulate the energy fields that surround us. These theories go on to say that energy is heat so when it’s transferred from one location to another it leaves behind a cold spot.

The Mel Meter Model 8704 is an intelligent microprocessor based instrument specifically designed for Paranormal Investigators & Enthusiasts. The Mel Meter incorporates various different features that are combined into a durable unit designed to be operated with only one hand. First and foremost the Mel Meter is the only instrument on the market to be able to record EMF and Temperature simultaneously. There are many theories that surround the use of EMF meters and Thermometers one such theory being that with EMF (Electromagnetic Field) fluctuations come what are referred to as ‘Cold Spots’ these colds spots are a result of heat (energy) being transferred from one location to another again theories dictate that this destination of energy transference is the point of manifestation, again just theory. In addition to this the unit features a large backlit display with numbers large enough to be viewed from several feet away again as an investigator myself this means no more fumbling for a flashlight to read the display. It will measure both mG and UT as well as both °F and °C along with the Minimum and Maximum measurements of both EMF and Temperature. The Thermometer uses what is called a Type K (chromel–alumel) general purpose thermocouple.

The thermocouple consists of two dissimilar metals joined together at one end. When the junction of the two metals is heated or cooled a voltage is produced that is linearized in the Mel’s micro-processor. It can then be correlated back to the temperature. They use a custom welded “bead” exposed type K thermocouple which is mass produced just for the Mel. To ensure temperature accuracy, the voltage generated between the thermocouple plug and the Mel’s circuit board is measured and the appropriate correction is applied. This is known as cold junction compensation. It is a great general purpose and very accurate technique for measuring temperature. Any industry standard type “K” thermocouple probe with mini plug can be substituted and plugged into the Mel.

The EMF feature can operate in a standard or “burst” high speed mode, and will measure extreme low frequency (ELF)as low as 30Hz this is 20Hz lower than the KII Meter which measures only as low as 50Hz. 50Hz is not considered to be part of the ELF range. The theory again being that an entity may be present in the ELF range of the EMF spectrum which commonly registers between 2.0 and 7.0 mG in strength. Most teams use EMF meters to debunk claims of activity claiming that long exposure to high EMF (Electromagnetic Field) can cause paranoia nausea even effect moods but I think it’s important to know that this may not be the ONLY use EMF meters remember that the field of Paranormal Investigation is fraught with theory after theory and until there can be 100% dismiss a theory it remains as much part of the investigation as any other. As long as there is something to the theory we should research and develop tools to test them. Other important observations worth mentioning is that the Mel meter circuit design combined with careful shielding and grounding techniques, is not susceptible to false positives created by Cell phones, Text messages, Walkie Talkies, and other RF transmitting interference devices.

The display is a large display with large easy to read numbers. In fact, the actual EMF number size is 0.60″ and 0.25” for the Ambient Temperature both displayed on the same 2” X 1” screen. The Backlight can be turned on or off manually and is bright enough to illuminate an object approx 8ft away it also aides the user in navigating stairs and such in total darkness.

Another neat feature with the unit is that it has a fold out stand and tripod mount in the back of the device this allows you to place the Mel Meter on a table and prop it up. This is good for recording a session with a camcorder.

Something particularly frustrating with these kinds of devices is battery drain with all that they do you find that half way through an investigation you need to replace your batteries. However, this is not the case with the Mel meter. In fact the Mel Meter will operate for 40 hours continuously without the backlight display and about 15 hours or so with the backlight on continuously. If you have the Mel-8704-ProNavigator with the flashlight, you’ll get 5 hours of constant flashlight and backlight display operation.

Mel-8704R-PSA (21487-750) AC/DC EMF, Temperature, Flashlights, Glow Buttons & Programmable Sound Amplifier

The Mel-8704R-PSA is a very sensitive device that uses a microphone as a detection sensor / transducer. It is designed specifically to detect very subtle sound wave vibrations within the environment. In addition, an audio output with adjustable gain is provided which allows the user to hear sounds at an amplified level. This is perfect for hearing impaired individuals.

There are 5 individual sensitivity steps that you can use. Each time you press the range button, an LED on top will blink indicating the sensitivity setting selected.

Level 1 = RED is the default (least sensitive)

Level 2 = PURPLE, RED

Level 3 = BLUE, PURPLE, RED

Level 4 = YELLOW, BLUE, PURPLE, RED

Level 5 = GREEN, YELLOW, BLUE, PURPLE, RED (most sensitive)

The Mel-8704R-PSA has 3 modes of operation in the PSA function. The first mode is the “real time mode” which illuminates ALL of the LED’s in a linear, sequential format from right to left with NO Sound. The Mel-8704R-PSA is monitoring ALL sounds within the environment and the LED displays every sound wave as it occurs. The second mode is what is referred to as the “Simon mode”. With this mode, individual LED lights will come on depending on the sound wave strength. That is to say, it will jump directly to the color that represents the “peak” sound pressure level received. It will announce the strength level using a specific colored LED & tone, and then return to the zero (or baseline) point. The third mode of operation is similar to the “Simon mode”, but the individual alarm tones are deactivated. In certain environments, the sound from our piezo alarm may “bounce” off of hard surfaces in the environment so this silent mode prevents this from happening.

The SDD Shadow Detection Works With:

* RED & GREEN LEDs * A RED or GREEN Laser Grid * A RED or GREEN Laser Pointer * LED Flashlight * The Mel Meter Flashlight can also be used as a diffuse reflective sensor up to 5′ away. This feature enables detection of reflective or solid objects that pass in front of the Mel Meter. Or, turn the Mel flashlight OFF to detect self-illuminating or glowing objects in the field of view. * You can use the light from a RED exit sign, street light coming through a window, or any other indirect “stable” incandescent light. SDD Directions: 1. Turn on the Mel-SDD circuit located behind the Mel Meter Tilt stand. The SDD circuit will beep twice and then default to the least sensitive detection range, sensitivity level #1. There are a total of 5 sensitivity levels. 2. On the side of the Mel Meter is a momentary push button labeled “SDD Sensitivity”. Press this Button twice. You will hear a Beep each time the button is pressed. Pressing it twice will increment the SDD to sensitivity level #3 based on the initial Power Up default starting at level #1. 3. Position the Mel Meter on a tripod or flat surface so that the light intensity sensor located above the Mel flashlight is aimed in the general direction of the RED LED illuminator. The RED LED illumination source can be located up to 75′ away. It is not imperative to have the illumination source perfectly aligned with the light intensity sensor because the SDD has an automatic 5 sec. light calibration feature. 4. Test the detection sensitivity by slowly moving the RED LED illumination beam to the left or right side of the SDD detector so that only minimal light is received. The SDD will produce a four step descending tone pattern. Then, move the illumination so that the SDD receives more light and you will hear an ascending tone pattern. Important Note: The SDD performs a diagnostic test and recalibration every 5 seconds. So, if the processor diagnostic & calibration routine falls within the time of your test, it could momentarily reverse the tone pitch. This will be automatically corrected during the next 5 sec. cycle. 5. Once you get a good feel for the way it operates, you can try different techniques. To use the Mel-SDD as a diffuse reflective sensor, adjust the sensitivity to Level # 4-5. Then turn on the Mel Meter RED flashlight. Allow the detection circuit to stabilize with nothing in front of the Mel Meter. Now move your hand in front of the Mel Meter through the flashlight beam. The SDD will detect your hand up to a 4′ distance. Be sure that you are in complete darkness when you do this. To detect a self-illuminating source, turn the Mel flashlight OFF. Strike a match, use a lighter or turn on a flashlight within the Mel-SDD field of view. As always, adjust the sensitivity for best performance based on type of light source, proximity or separation distance and individual application circumstances. If you lose track of which sensitivity setting you have,

simply turn the SDD OFF then ON to reset back to sensitivity level #1 Also be aware that stray light from windows, cars, moonlight, flashlights etc. can all influence the SDD. ATDD +/-5 Degree Hot & Cold Spot Detection

The ATDD is designed specifically to monitor and detect a +5 deg. / -5 deg. ambient temperature (deviation) change that occurs within an environment. When a temperature shift does occur, the device will react quickly and produce a unique, one octave “step” tone for each individual degree change. Incremental “+” changes have a higher pitch while descending “-” temperature drops have a lower pitch. This allows a paranormal investigator to “hear” and validate any temperature change around the device from up to 50′ away (line of sight).

This device can also help investigators become more efficient and thorough by helping to monitor remote unattended areas throughout a house or building during an investigation and help direct attention to an area that may have paranormal activity. In addition, the ATDD device utilizes RED LEDs for a “+” temperature change and BLUE LEDs for a “-” change.

I have always been questioning the paranormal since I was a kid. Having lived all across America and in several countries overseas, I have heard story after story of this place or that place being haunted, and my curiosity always got the better of me. Always looking and seeing things I could not explain, my eye opener was when I was twenty and seeing a full body apparition standing in front of me made me more curious of what actually happens to us when we pass on. I aim to find the truth of what is out there. When I am not finding the truth I am usually taking care of officer business or fencing in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc.). Aurthur is also President (for business only) Chase Manger, director of Cheyenne Mountain Paranormal Investigations, co-owner of Front Range Ghost Shop and also severs 16 years army and has been Medical Retired. Having been station in places like Iraq, Korea, Fort Hood TX, Aberdeen Maryland, Fort Irwin CA and Fort Riley KS just to name a few this hole time caring what ever equipment he could care doing investigation on his time off in all thous places trying to learn what he could and how to be a better investigator. always learning on how to do thing better.
