Spirit Box

P-SB7 2A device used for contacting spirits through the use of radio frequency. These devices or so called Spirit box also known as Ghost Box or Frank’s box are used as an electronic medium for the purpose of direct communication with a spirit.

1) The notion of using white noise to allow spirits to speak is nothing new. It’s, in fact, one of the original “tenants” EVP that dates back to the experiments conducted by Dr. Konstantīns Raudive in the 1940’s, till his death in 1974. The belief seems to be, that since spirits manipulate energy in order to manifest and/or move objects, they need some form of energy in order to manifest sound. One of the long held beliefs in EVP was that spirits used the internal sound of the recorder to put their sound on the tape/digital file. This being true it’s possible for a spirit to make a disembodied voice, but… if the theory of energy manipulation is correct, it would be much harder without the “noise” for the spirit to manipulate.

2) One of the big problems with Franks Box/ Ghost Box is that people aren’t fully aware how to use it, or how it should even run. Firstly, asking a simple question and getting a one word answer is well, …. “HOG WASH”. Anything that scans radio frequency is going to pick up random pieces of sound. You’re bound to get a number or a single word. Similarly, I’ve seen people use these boxes as they do a linear sweep, going from one station to the very next and so on then repeating the process over and over. Unless I’m mistaken, the original set up of “Franks box” was supposed to do a random sweep of the signals which would (seemingly) eliminate the possibility of picking up on any solid piece of signal for too long. Granted this still doesn’t eliminate the possibility you could get frequency pollution from a CB or other broadcasting device. Meaning nothing you get is ever “unexplainable” because you can’t eliminate those sources of potential explanation. With that in mind, the Ghost Box is fun to use but I suggest you use it as entertainment only and never try to introduce any audible sounds you may capture as being spirits or any other paranormal phenomenon as there are way too many frequency being cast about to prove without a doubt that voice or sound came from another dimension. And after all that’s what we are all about, finding solid, un-disputable scientific proof that “Ghost” do exist ….Right? If you want to try the “Ghost Box” for yourself the “Franks Box” runs a couple hundred clams, but the good news is you can build one for around 30 bucks using what’s known as the “Radio Shack Hack”.

Here most difficult part in this is learning to hear the messages. Not everything that comes through the box is spirit box communication. Some of it is radio snippets. It takes time and practice to know the difference. I am still learning and probably will be forever. Like anything in life, there is a learning curve and this just takes time. Be prepared to put time into it and be patient and don’t give up. This is not something I can easily explain. I will just say that in time you will know the difference.
Do not hold the box too close to the recorder. If you place the recorder too close to the box you may get interference. The new digital recorders are very sensitive so don’t talk too loud or you will blast out your ears on playback. You may have to experiment with this. Always record your sessions and listen to them afterward. Although I do hear some messages live in real time during the session, much of what I hear is afterward while playing back the recording. Keep your sessions to 20 minutes or less, but I would say no less than 10 minutes. Sometimes it takes a good 3-4 or even 5 minutes to get warmed up and going. Anything longer than 20 minutes can be incredibly tedious to listen back through later and the spirits do lose energy over time. Download a free audio program like audacity and use this to listen to your recordings. Always listen with headphones.

[pullquote align=”left|center|right” textalign=”left|center|right” width=”30%”]My advice to anyone starting out new is first and foremost use some type of spiritual protection.[/pullquote] Keep sessions under 20 minutes. Record each session with a decent audio recorder. State on the recorder if you hear any background noise so you don’t mistake it later as communication. Always show love, compassion and respect to the spirits as well as your guides. Do not encourage any negative energies by provoking them or calling them names or disrespecting them. Educate yourself and learn how to open yourself psychically. And most of all BE PATIENT. Do not give up if you aren’t getting the results you want immediately. It takes time and practice.

You will receive very differing types of voices. Some voices have a lot of vibration to them. Some are quiet, some are loud and clear, some have echos or repeating words, some words overlap other words, sometimes they stutter, some messages come through in a song and sometimes they even answer your question right before you ask it! Allow at least 20 seconds after each question and probably the best advice I can give you is don’t talk too much and no whispering! It is so frustrating to not be able to hear the messages when you are listening to the recording later because you or someone else is talking. And I can’t tell you how many times I thought we captured an amazing evp only to figure out later it was someone whispering-myself included. When you are in a dark room trying to be quiet I’ve found it’s actually rather natural to whisper. If anyone is your group talks they should talk loudly and clearly so it’s obvious that it is their voice. Some messages are one word while others may be an entire sentence. I do believe that the spirits try to come through with a male or female sounding voice but this is not always the case. Sometimes a sentence will have a mixture of male and female sounding voices. If you think you hear something but aren’t sure, clip out that section and save if for later and move on. Once your ears are trained better the message may become quite clear and often times I need to give my ears a break for a few hours then come back to it and it is clear. And don’t force it. If you can’t hear it clearly never mind and do another session to try to get clearer messages. My motto is ‘when in doubt throw it out’. There are 3 classes of EVP’s with a ‘Class A’ being super crisp and clear to all that hear it, a Class B will probably be heard the same by all after you tell them what is said and a class C that will probably be heard as something different by everyone that listens.

Once you come to the realization that you are communicating with spirits it will change your world and outlook on life forever! It took me almost a year to believe and many others have almost given up on it in the beginning. I had no idea what I was doing when I first started and doubted anything that I thought I heard. It’s when you have a commutation of clips that you can listen to over and over that your rational mind will decide that there is no way that this is all coincidence or radio snippets. It’s just impossible!

If you are going to use a spirit box please don’t treat it as a toy. Please don’t disrespect those spirits that come through and please try to use it for a good purpose. Absolutely contact your loved ones and friends. Don’t get too focused on any cuss words or name calling that may come through and don’t fear it. Have a good laugh and move on to more important things. Listen to the messages and if you hear those cries for help, realize that those are people who were once living, who for one reason or another did not go to the light and please try to help them if you can. Remember this could be a child looking for their family or the little sweet old lady down the street who passed. Do not assume that all ghosts/spirits are bad with evil intentions. This is simply not the case. It could be your family members that I or others have contact with and certainly you would want them to be helped if needed. There are many wonderful books available on spirit rescue and it is very rewarding. As this becomes more popular (and I believe it will) I really am hoping much good will come out of this. My personal clues that a spirit may be stuck is they use such words as guilt, fear, dead, sad, scared, angry and they generally focus on negativity and earthly matters and they usually ask for help. Those who have gone to the light generally talk about good, happiness and love.

If you are the type of person that always finds the negative in everything or are very fearful I would not advise using a spirit box. Likenesses attract here and if you are negative you will likely attract negative spirits. Also, if you do not understand the spirit world and earthbound spirits I wouldn’t suggest going out ghost hunting and looking for possible negative energies. It is best to educate yourself first. And remember that negative energies feed off of your fear. Do not fear them!
I’ve seen many people who do this lose all their common sense. Honestly yes I believe spirit can communicate with us this way but I do not think everything I hear is spirit communication. Nor do I see ghosts in every picture I see, nor do I think everything that happens in my life is a sign from spirit, or that spirits talk to us while we’re taking a shower through the white noise created by the sound of the water running. Seriously! Keep your senses. This is a huge pet peeve of mine. Just because we can occasionally hear from spirit through a device such as this, it does not mean that every little ooh or aah sound it makes is spirit. I can barely stomach all the you tube video’s with the little subtitles of nothing but radio snippets. No I don’t always know the difference. Sometimes it’s impossible to tell for sure. Sometimes it’s quite obvious. My ‘could be’ spirit messages file is larger than any other. Sometimes we can’t be sure and we have to leave it at that. This is experimental! Experiment with it. I am a tough person to impress. And no I’m not saying my spirit box clips are any better than others or I have any special connection that makes me better at this than others. I’ve heard some others that have blown me away too-but they are few and far between. Err on the side of caution and keep doing it over and over again until you hear those things that your sane rational mind just cannot explain away. Those are the wows! And they are the reason I believe.

Now here are some others you can buy.

ITC Research Device
Designed by Gary Galka of DAS, with Spiritual guidance and influence from Chris Fleming, the Model P-SB7 is the first production built Spirit Box designed exclusively for Paranormal enthusiasts. The P-SB7 made its premier debut on Ghost Adventures “LIVE” show from the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum on October 30, 2009 where the P-SB7 was used by Chris, a Sensitive, Paranormal Investigator and expert in the Paranormal field. From the moment it was turned ON, The P-SB7 provided “real time” responses to his questions over a 40 minute segment of the show. When used by a properly trained individual, under certain circumstances, the P-SB7 will provide results similar that of an EVP recorder, but in real time. Since then, it has become very popular and can be seen frequently on Ghost Adventures where Zak continues to receive consistent relevant responses to specific questions.
The P-SB7 utilizes a milli-second adjustable Forward or Reverse frequency “sweep” technique coupled with a proprietary high frequency synthetic noise or “white noise” distributed between frequency steps. The New 2011 model now offers an enhanced FM frequency sweep which includes an additional 119 new frequencies from 76MHz to 87.9MHz. No other Hack Box or Modified radio currently offers this. A seven step adjustable sweep rate provides user flexibility based on individual technique and session circumstances. There are two discreet audio outputs; (1) 15mW Earphone, and (1) 250mW Speaker. A bright EL back light display with manual ON/OFF select is ideal for viewing in the dark. The P-SB7 uses three “AAA” batteries. The P-SB7 is intended to be used by professional investigators to help promote the field of Paranormal ITC Research.

The P-SB11
Spirit Box is the latest Spirit Box device created by DAS. Results from paranormal enthusiasts, including its premier debut on a recent episode of Ghost Adventures proved to be encouraging. The P-SB11 features user selectable single and dual AM/FM Sweep capabilities, Adjustable Sweep Rates, Forward / Reverse Sweep, Dual Audio Outputs, Selectable AM/FM Antenna Attenuation, Built in high intensity Red LED Flashlight, Audio Mute while Sweeping, Adjustable volume, Visual & Audible Hot & Cold Spot Detection with selectable Sound. Future models of the P-SB11 can be further enhanced using DAS proprietary expansion modules for Natural Field Detection, SDD Shadow Detection, Vibration and other DAS modules.

Enhanced Adjustable MIC Sensitivity Numerical 4-digit (0000) EVP Counter Interface Allows for more advanced question and response sessions. The Numerical Counter Interface with adjustable sensitivity, increments when a response is received, Tags, Dates Time Stamps the EVP Location on the recorded file, and can separate a Class “A” EVP from other weaker responses. Auto ON / OFF Data Logging feature allows the RT-EVP’s Counter Interface to be turned on/off to gather data automatically. This allows the user to place the RT-EVP anywhere and then retrieve it later. If any disturbances are detected during the recording time, they will logged and appear as tagged “counts” in the file. These Tags which identify the exact location of the disturbance, are provided to eliminate unnecessary file review time.
New Custom made 15Hz Sound Isolating ear buds from Koss provides a separate volume control on the real time Playback. This will allow the user to adjust the playback volume control to eliminate any feedback at high MIC sensitivities. Amplify Ambient Sounds up to 81.5dB with the Recorder ON or OFF to hear very low level voices and sounds. Operates in FM Frequency Sweep Mode with Multi Step Speed Adjustment from 50mS to 110mS Operates in FM Frequency Sweep & EVP Combination (Hybrid Mode) with Simultaneous Playback Frequency Sweep Forward or Reverse Intelli-Q, Real Time Data Analysis, permits Audio and Sweep Frequency sounds to be repeated without Interfering with your Recording Session.

I have always been questioning the paranormal since I was a kid. Having lived all across America and in several countries overseas, I have heard story after story of this place or that place being haunted, and my curiosity always got the better of me. Always looking and seeing things I could not explain, my eye opener was when I was twenty and seeing a full body apparition standing in front of me made me more curious of what actually happens to us when we pass on. I aim to find the truth of what is out there. When I am not finding the truth I am usually taking care of officer business or fencing in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc.). Aurthur is also President (for business only) Chase Manger, director of Cheyenne Mountain Paranormal Investigations, co-owner of Front Range Ghost Shop and also severs 16 years army and has been Medical Retired. Having been station in places like Iraq, Korea, Fort Hood TX, Aberdeen Maryland, Fort Irwin CA and Fort Riley KS just to name a few this hole time caring what ever equipment he could care doing investigation on his time off in all thous places trying to learn what he could and how to be a better investigator. always learning on how to do thing better.
