Common Hazards of the Fall Season
By Katie Snow

We all love the fall! A chill in the air, bonfires and the perfect time of the year for tripping hazards when paranormal investigating. The onset of fall brings many areas more rain and with rain comes slip hazards. It can take some time to adjust to the suddenly wet conditions brought about by rainy weather. Rain will lead to wetter sidewalks which will lead to wet floors in the entry ways of buildings and stairwells. When going on an investigation stay mindful of where you step.

Autumn also brings slippery leaves. We all love to peek at the bounty of beauty bestowed upon us and the trees are certainly one of them. Like a paintbrush taken to branches the beauty of the leaf changing season brings us leaves upon the ground in abundance. In abandoned areas, buildings and in many cemeteries this presents a trip hazard. In older cemeteries stone markers are short and many hard enough to see when uncovered but in Autumn the leaves cover them making them unnoticeable so make sure you scout out an area prior to going in darkness. With the wetness comes slippery leaves making them like a sheet of ice. Keep notice of where they pile up and on the weather conditions as being aware helps with most of the Autumn hazards.
If you are going into an area where current residents reside watch out for Halloween decor and wires leading to the yard. Tripping while on an investigation is no joke and could lead to injury. Many of the larger yard decorations have darker color wires to blend in with the ground so watch where you step.

To help always wear proper shoes. If it is going to rain rubber soles may be your best bet. Falling can be traumatic so before getting up regain your composure and make sure you are not seriously hurt. Once you regained your footing take your first few steps slowly making sure nothing is broken. If something seems not quite right tell a teammate and ask for help, there is nothing wrong with asking to stay with someone for a bit.

Autumn is my favorite time of the year though in Florida we get very little of it. It is a fun time for investigating and offers many opportunities to do ghost walks and harvest hayrides, just when you do, make sure you remember that your safety comes first.

The “Kongamato” of Africa
By Katie Snow

Deep within the wilds of central east Africa there lies a creature called the Kongamato.
The large beaked flying bird with lizard like skin with membranous wings creature gained notarity
in 1932. This is when explore Frank Welland described it in his literary works “Witchbound Africa”
stating it is a reddish bat like creature with leathery wings totally devoid of any features with a wing
span of five or more feet, and with teeth in its huge beak.

It looks very much like a pterodactyl when a picture is shown to eyewitnesses. The evidence
for this is the fact that the natives can describe it to such detail and accuracy even when unprompted.
The natives consider it a demon also known as a Mulombe, a very awful thing which is much worse then anything
that haunts these vast african lands. Mr. Welland states in his book that if ever this creature could thrive,
a reptil type bird such as this could thrive in this land.

The Kaonde people of the North-Western Province used to carry charms called “muchi wa Kongamato” to protect
them at certain river crossings from the Kongamato”. In the 1920’s, Headman Kanyinga from the Jiwundu Swamp
area near the Zairean border instantly identified as Kongamato a picture of a pterodactyl. Nevertheless,
as recently as 1958, the science journalist Maurice Burton wrote in the Illustrated London News in 1958
that there had been several reports form Africa of a pterodactyl-like creature, with speculation that
the Bangweulu Swamps might be one of its habitats. He pointed out that off the coast of Africa,
the coelacanth, a deep sea contemporary of the pterodactyl, had been caught by fisherman…”

Alter Pictures Without Software or Apps

Alter Pictures Without Software or Apps.
By Andrew Alvarez

As part of the Photography Team for NPS, I look at data held within the file of the photo. We call this exhif data. It contains data such as time, date, how long the exposure was open, if the flash fired, iso settings etc. One key bit of information held in that data is the type of camera used. If no camera is listed, we can often times dismiss it as being altered or not an original file.

We review pictures, and I have personally aside from NPS, that have all the required exhif data in them, model of the camera included. There seems to be no reason this photo shouldn’t be considered an actual example of a paranormal occurrence. There are many things you can do to unknowingly alter your photo. Here are a few:

Movement: Movement does a few things and is probably the biggest culprit. A camera works by allowing light to enter a focal point and rendering it to an image either on film or digitally. The shutter is the device that allows the light in. For low light shots, it’s recommended to have a slower shutter speed and for bright light, a faster speed. The problem is today most cameras have an automatic mode and are usually set on them by default. In situations where the light detected by the sensors can either be low or high, the mechanism has a hard time deciding which way to go. This results in sometimes an even longer shutter time. While that shutter is open, unless the camera is on a tripod, we will likely move, as our bodies do naturally, and cause what’s called motion blur or light streaks in darker environments. For a quality shot to be achieved, the camera must remain perfectly still while the shutter is open.

When we breath, our bodies also move. And can create the same issues

When we move around, as in walking and sitting, we can also disturb dust or bugs which can cause the orb affect.

——-

Dirty Lens : Often time oil from our hands (especially after we eat pizza) or dirt gets on a lens and we may not even know it. If you are using a cell phone, it’s especially difficult as the lens is about the size of an erasure on a pensile. The oil can distort the light coming through the lens and alter the image. Dirt, or other contaminants, can have the same affect. There’s been videos on social media posted with this as an example to create a vignette effect. The photographer smears petroleum jelly on their lens to get that effect.
——-

Blocking the flash: Have you ever taken a picture and saw your finger in it? Well I think we all have. Unknowingly blocking the flash is just as easy. A flash is designed to wash or fill an area with light. Light travels in straight lines though. If part of the light source is blocked, the rest of the light from such a small light source, doesn’t have the chance to fill the area. Instead you are left with shadows or sometimes a person that looks like they may have an entity near them because they are darker than others around them.

These are just three things we come across as a photo analysis team. Learning what causes these and how to prevent them is an important step in our field. When we can eliminate the variables, our samples will be cleaner and scientifically more acceptable. What are some other things you can think of that can alter an image without apps or software?

The Paracas Candelabra, Peru
By Stephanie Kelly

One of the world’s oddest and oldest mysteries is that of the Paracas Candelabra which is located in Pisco Bay, Peru. This unexplained geoglyph, also known as the Candelabra of the Andes, is approximately 650 feet long and estimated to be about carved into the hill at least 2 feet deep in most places. This man-made creation is large enough that it has, reportedly, been seen from up to 12 miles away by people viewing from both land and sea. The giant ground drawings have yet to be connected to any one civilization, but many artifacts have been located that confirm one or more civilizations residing around the Pisco Bay area.
It is not completely clear what these massive markings mean or what they are meant to look like or represent. It is also not clear when they were created but pottery that was found near this massive landmark were radiocarbon dated back to around 200 BC. Other items found at Paracas include paintings, etchings, and petroforms. Some of these items appear to depict animals and people along with different plants and what appears to be random shapes.
With all of the recorded unexplained geoglyphs, hieroglyphs and petroglyphs people wonder who made them. Could lease be special places or records for an unknown civilization? Would it be possible that these are actually markers and notes for tribes and civilizations that would migrate across the deserts?

Paranormal Activity Can Be Beneficial To Your Health!
By Katie Snow

I have seen many articles claiming the ill effects on the mind to those who may have been met with mental issues of a client, however, did you know there are also many mental health benefits to someone encountering paranormal activity in their life? There certainly are two sides of this argument but I wanted to bring you a bit of information that was a positive benefit to those of us whom feel we have had an encounter without explanation.

As I was searching the Internet I bumped into an article written for the well known magazine called “Psychology Today”. I was please that they offered a flip side to the mental health issue making “seeing ghosts” a positive verses negative impact on the brain and I thought I would share a bit about what they reported.

According to them belief in the paranormal can have a positive psychological effect by aiding many who are going through the grieving process. It seems it can help with the life coping mechanism giving many hope where perhaps there was none. The also go on to say “It can be a key to living. Knowing that you never really lose the ones you love brings peace. Just the knowledge that we go on after we die is enough for people to make positive changes in their lives.”

They do state that “It would be easy to dismiss these claims as a product of a grieving mind. However, there are just as many cases where there has been no trauma in the life of the person who experienced spirit contact.”

I find it a fresh way for the medical field to understand and perhaps change some of their thinking to be more compassionate to those of us who can not prove an experience but know in our heart of hearts we have had an encounter with something other worldly that simply not always has an explanation.

Paxton Manor

Paxton Manor
By: Kent Daniel S. Villavicencio

Paxton Manor also known as Carlheim Manor was a 765 acre property that was purchased for $50,000 in Leesburg, Virginia. Built in 1877 by Nationally Acclaimed New York based architect Henry C. Dudley to be a two and a half story main house covering 20,000 square feet and over 32 bedrooms mimicked the look of Italian villas. The property was built to be the summer home of Rachel and Charles Paxton and their only daughter followed by her only son but ended up being the families home for nearly a century until the time of their deaths. As the years went by, Margaret’s son passed away at the age of five and shortly after Margaret passed away as well. From Mrs. Paxton’s death until the early 1950s, the residence was used as a convalescent home known as the Paxton Home for Children, where children recovering from illness or injury would stay during the summer months. From 1954 until 1980 it served as an orphanage and from 1980 until 2004 it served as a childcare center. The property was quiet from 2004 until 2009 awaiting its next chapter: the arrival of The Arc of Loudoun and its associated programs for children and adults with disabilities and their families.
The properties history goes way back to when the Algonquian Indians, who believed in the afterlife and practiced shamanic rituals. Perhaps their efforts to reconnect with the deceased are what have left portals to the hereafter still open. Two other tribes, the Catawba and the Lenape, frequently butted heads, and had a particularly bloody battle right by Leesburg. You can imagine that the spirits of these warring warriors have been unhappily disturbed by the influx of present day tourists. Leesburg’s colonial era is also marked by much black magic and bloodshed. Though Virginia was not as eager as Massachusetts to prosecute those accused of witchcraft, it too had its fair share of trials. You can be sure that the spirits of the wrongly convicted have yet to move on from the area. Ghosts of dead soldiers are also believed to be a chief source of Leesburg’s paranormal activity. In fact, the famous Civil War Battle, the Battle of Ball’s Bluff, occurred right by the Carlheim estate. It is said that the Paxton house is haunted by traumatized troops who may have sought refuge at the building. There is a possibility that ghosts of dead soldiers and the wrongly convicted potentially of witchcraft, orphans and a man accused of animal cruelty are rumored to occupy the premises of Paxton Manor. Jedidiah Carver, a man who lived at Paxton and was exiled from Leesburg after being found guilty of mutilating animals is rumored to have not left the property, he and his family secretly relocated to the massive underground lake that lies beneath it.

Evidence that can be seen on Youtube by Antietam Paranormal Investigators shows a spirit box recording EVP stating “Help Me” and “No” from an entity on the premises located during the properties annual event “Shocktober” That takes place in October every year. It is rumored that Mrs. Paxton can be seen walking through the house and peering out windows pointing to something on the property. Witnesses say that other bizarre events are still happening throughout the house, like paintings moving from room to room and furniture being rearranged.

Is Akrotiri really Atlantis
By Stephanie Kelly
Many have heard of the Quest for Atlantis; a, somewhat futile attempt to find this mysterious and lost city that many scientists and research refuse to give up on. The first, confirmed, mentions of the lost city of Atlantis was made in Timaeus and Critias by famous historian, Plato. Plato was well known between 424-328 BC and his story concerning Atlantis even had the Greeks split on its validity. Plato himself even states that the story of Atlantis was passed down to him from his grandfather who had heard it from a man in Athens. Plato also says that the Athenian had been told the story by an Egyptian priest. Though many factual stories have been passed down from generation to generation and society to society, Atlantis appears to have been lost without any evidence or finds connected to it reality.
We do know, from Plato, that Atlantis would of been a large island for the time located just past the Pillars of Hercules, commonly considered the Strait of Gibraltar. This island could of had at least 10 cities but the only two mentioned are Royal City and Metropolis. After the people of Atlantis had conquered Africa and Egypt and what is now modern day Italy they attempted to take Athens. Athens quickly defeated Atlantis and they were forced back by the Athena’s led army who also liberated the lands they had captured. Not long after the Atlanteans were forced back, the island was cursed with earthquakes and floods until it finally sank into a muddy sea. According to scholars, Atlantis would of met its end around 1,500 BC, possibly, according the information provided by Plato.
Now that we know the history behind Atlantis, let us fast forward to modern day research, developments and education. Currently in modern day Santorini lays an ancient town, known as Akrotiri, that appears to have faced the same horrific end as Pompeii. The only difference between Akrotiri and Pompeii is the lack of human remains since none have been find within the current excavation of the city. Akrotiri is confirmed as a Bronze Age settlement that left behind many artifacts such as pottery and jewelry that are currently housed as the Museum of Ancient Thira.
The museum appears to have items from Akrotiri that could just match some of what Plato says about Atlantis. Some of these items are fragments of items depicting African scenery and the Adorant Monkeys. The archeologists have been able to determine that the demise of Akrotiri was not sudden. This Aegean center could’ve easily had to deal with earthquakes and tsunamis until the final eruption would have hidden it forever.
Though many scientists, archeologists and historians of Italy believe that Akrotiri is Atlantis there are still many questions that have not been, and may never be, answered. What if we, as researchers, are overlooking the evidence? Could Akrotiri actually be Atlantis? Could Plato have completely made up this story to get people reading his writings? Could Atlantis of been real but Plato’s information is a little exaggerated or inaccurate because of the lack of written record?

UFO Spotted On ISS Live Feed – July 9, 2016
By Stephanie Kelly

One July 9th, 2016, the live feed from the International Space Station was cut off after an unexplained object was seen flying into the earth’s atmosphere. A video of this event can be found on YouTube, posted by Streetcap1, here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FsvCAc4iTU). That alone is enough to make people question what was going on and conspiracy theorists appear to be having a ball with the possibilities, but let’s look at the facts!
First, the world is rather lucky to be able to watch a live streaming video from the International Space Station thanks to NASA. Although, it has had issues with signal loss and technical problems it is a rather reliable feed and can be found on the NASA website (https://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/iss_ustream.html). The space station is also rapidly moving around the earth a rate of once every 90 minutes so let’s make sure to take that into consideration when looking at the video.
Secondly, it is a known fact that there is a large amount of space junk, satellites, other space stations and meteors roaming around the earth just waiting to get caught in the gravitational pull. To give a better idea of how many things are floating around; there are currently 1071 working satellites in orbit and at least 21,000 large pieces of space junk floating around freely! Also, let me add, that a Chinese Space Station, unmanned, appears to be lost in space and some believe that it could reenter the earth’s atmosphere at any second.
Lastly, I have not been able to find an archived copy of the feed for July 9th! I have been able to find out that at approximately 12:06 am EDT the ISS did dock with the Soyuz spacecraft. Other than this docking, NASA is saying nothing about events on that day.
With the information provided, what conclusion can you come up with to explain this UFO? Do you think it is extraterrestrial or space junk? What could explain the sudden loss of live feed? What information can you use to backup your views of this odd event?

Wright Patterson AFB & Hangar 18 – Dayton, Ohio
By Stephanie Kelly

Most people are aware of Wright Patterson Air Force Base located in Dayton, Ohio. Wright Patterson was built in 1917 and is still one of the largest US Air Force bases in existence. This base is headquarters for the Air Force Materials Command with is responsible for research and development of cutting edge technology. The pass is the home for more than 60 units and well over 20,000 civilian and military employees.
Located on the base in the Top Secret Hangar 18. It is believed by some to be the first military location of Alien research and experimentation. A lot of this believe comes from a man named Marion Magruder. Marion was a WWII United States Air Force pilot who was also a member of the Air War College and was sent to investigate materials that were brought to Wright Patterson’s Hangar 18. Pilot Marion Milton Magruder, also known as Mac Magruder, was born in 1911 and died in 1997 at the age of 86. Pilot Magruder made a statement to his sons, on his deathbed, concerning what all he had seen at Hangar 18.
According to the children of Pilot Magruder, he said that he was rarely willing to talk about what happened, and what he had seen at Wright Field until approximately a month before his death. At that time, Magruder said that he was flown from the Air War College with others to Wright Field. Upon his arrival he saw pieces of debris, shrapnel, and two unknown aliens. He said that he saw 2 species at Wright Field; one appeared to friendly while the other was rather aggressive and was considered a military hostile.
Those present as Magruder was talking stated that his eyes would begin to well up as he talked about the aliens. Pilot Magruder, according to his children, arrived when the aliens were alive and watched as the Military performed multiple experiments until he watched them die. Magruder said that he helped move materials from Wright Field to Eglin Air Force Base, this included the corpses of the aliens.
To add to Pilot Magruder’s story, he was also stationed at Area 51! It is also documented that on July 26, 1952 a squad of motorcycle people arrived at Pilot Magruder’s home and escorted him to the Pentagon. This is approximately a week after the first sighting of UFO’s above Washington D.C and the night that the second UFO sighting in D.C. was documented.
Is this all coincidence? Is there something unexplained or extra terrestrial going on at Area 51? Was Magruder’s story true?

SNAPCHAT FILTERS
By: April Abercrombie

Lately people have been submitting photos (screenshots) containing weird faces from their Snapchat apps, which they are concerned may be paranormal in nature.

The Snapchat app has a facial recognition feature built into it that allows the app to map your face, creating a mask. This allows the user to add various silly faces and effects to their image. These masks are completely animated, and will move and react with your facial expressions. It is just for fun, but the technology really is quite remarkable.

How the filters work:

The facial recognition software uses your device’s camera to scan for your face, looking for contrast areas (areas that are lighter or darker in color tone), which tells it where to place a series of points. Once it places these points, it matches them up to its pre-programmed facial features, adjusting them where necessary to match your own unique facial features as closely as possible. It then creates a mask based on this data, which is fully animated and can move, and in some cases, emote with you.

It is not perfect. In all of that mapping and image comparing, it doesn’t always work as expected. You might get a mask that doesn’t fit quite right. Also, it can only find your face straight on front view. If you turn too far to the side or tilt the camera too far, it will lose sight of your face. Lighting is also a factor. Because it is looking for high contrast areas, if your image is too bright or too dark, it will have problems locating your face.

When the software loses track of your face, it tries to relocate it, and then redraws the mask. The problem is, it doesn’t always relocate your face. It can locate another object in view, and be tricked into thinking that is your face.

In other words, just like the human brain, it can experience cases of pareidolia. It may map a face on a ceiling, furniture, a light fixture, etc.

There are a series of different face masks you can choose, one in particular allows you to pick another person’s face out of your existing photos and it will place that face over your own. This can appear very creepy if it manages to map the face where you wouldn’t expect it.

I am including a sample screenshot taken from my phone where the face mask mapped onto a lamp behind me, when I panned the camera too far.

Could this Snapchat filter phenomena ever be considered paranormal?

The reality of it is, most likely not.

Firstly because there have never been any confirmed photos of ghosts. It may not even be possible to catch a ghost in a photo, even if they do exist.

Secondly, there are far too many variables involved with the facial recognition technology employed by Snapchat, not to mention all the variables that go into photography itself, to ever say for certain that your Snapchat filter has found a ghost.

So in closing… even with it being as creepy as it sometimes can be, weird snapchat filter images are completely normal and explainable.

Lights over St. Louis, Missouri
By: Stephanie Kelly

August 2, 2016 at approximately 2:30 am CT, a St. Louis City Surveillance camera caught something no one can explain. At the top of the left hand side of the screen, an unexplained light appears. It’s movement is rather erratic and it’s light seems to turn on and off like it is controlled by a switch.
To give a little background into this sighting; an Illinois resident, Chase Rhoads, original turned a personal recording of this light to the local news station, KTVI-TV. After KTVI-TV’s story aired a man with the Illinois Metro East Parks and Recreation District decided to look at the surveillance videos and was rather surprised when he say the same light doing the exact same thing. The director with the Parks and Recreation District even made a statement along the line that though he didn’t believe in UFO’s but there was something weird with this light. The news station even contacted the Scott Air Force Base along with the FAA and both said that they didn’t know what the source of the light was.
This sighting has caught so much attention for many reasons. The main reason would appear to be that the Metro East Park and Recreation District published the surveillance video on August 3rd through their YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehzVYFSdVMs). To quote the video description, “We guarantee you will be perplexed if you watch all 5 minutes of this surveillance footage!”
Could this be a drone? That was my first thought, but the FAA and the local Air Force Base unable to identify, or give a possible answer to, the source of the light, it makes me thinks it wasn’t a drone. Thinking about it logically, it would be a safe assumption that the Air Force and Federal Aviation Administration know the basics of identifying drones.
Could it be weather related? According the National Weather Service through N.O.A.A. the weather at 2:49am was cloudy with a storm moving in and lightening can be seen in the background of the video. The wind was recording at an average wind speed of 4.9 South to Southwest. St. Louis is listed as having a high of 88 and a low of 73 along with the city only receiving .31 inches of rain.
What logical explanations can you think of for this light? How would you prove or disprove the UFO theory that is the main theory?

The symbolism of the Cauldron

The symbolism of the Cauldron
By: Tamara Ortiz

Cauldron – a large vessel usually made of iron or copper, used for boiling or cooking. Usually associated with medieval times and witches, this is a large iron pot in which poisons, ointments and medicines were concocted.

The word cauldron comes from Latin caldaria meaning “cooking pot” in turn from caldārium, “hot bath” You will find many legends and myths throughout history that tell tales of magical cauldrons. The cauldron is a symbol of rebirth therefore represent the female energy and will often be viewed as the womb.

The cauldron is said to be the center of life for Celtic witchcraft and the most important relic that belongs to the Celtic witch. This is because in ancient times, the cauldron would have been used for all the household cooking, bathing and carrying water back and forth from their water source. For most Celtics during this time the cauldron was the most expensive item in the home and would have had religious and spiritual carvings to embellish the design of the cauldron. The higher the status of the Celtic the more embellished and extravagant the cauldron would be.

The legend of “Dagda’s great Cauldron of Plenty” is a legend that reaches far back into time. The legend states that the cauldron was one of four legendary relics of Ireland, called “The Four Treasures of Eirean.” These four items are Nuada’s Sword of light, Lugh’s Spear, The Lia Fail and Dagda’s cauldron. The cauldron was said to provide those that were worthy with an endless supply of food and water. Eventually this legend would merge with the legend of the holy grail after Christianity came to Ireland. The legend then merged the idea of the cup of Christ with the legend of the Dagda’s cauldron and they became one. Many Celtics churches because of this merge produces beautiful chalices to represent the legends of both the cauldron and cup.

Although I speak of the legend of Dagda’s great cauldron of plenty, there are many legends similar to this legend…these are just a few legends regarding the cauldron.

The Cauldron of Dyrnwich: The Cauldron of Dyrnwich is one of the 13 Treasures of Britain, according to Welsh folklore this cauldron would also only cook for the worthy and if any individual was not worthy, the cauldron was said not to boil.

Medea’s Cauldron: The folklore in ancient Greece speak of Medea and her bronze cauldron. The cauldron represented her power of knowledge, was used for herbal magic. Legend states Medea used the cauldron to help her lover Jason get past a dragon so may retrieve the relic of the golden fleece.

The Cauldron in Germanic and Norse: It is said in the folklore of the Norse, that every night, Andhrímnir slaughters the beast Sæhrímnir and prepares it in his cauldron, Eldhrimnir for the Gods and heroes to feast upon in Valhalla. The name Eldhrimnir means “sooty black from the fire”

The folklore, myths and legends surrounding the cauldron are plentiful and I can go on forever really. I am just going to end with this…an interesting element of all these legends tells the same story. If you are wise and work hard you will receive the fruits of your labor. I say this because the legends when they speak of the cauldron, they state that the unworthy will not be able to use or receive anything from a cauldron they didn’t pay their respects to or have a hand in working for. I believe this to be an important lesson.

The Dingonek, West Africa’s “Jungle Walrus”

Sara Fawley

Sara Fawley

Hello my name is Sara Fawley. I was born and raised in San Diego, Ca Oct 1965. I lived there until I was 19, then moved with my now ex-husband to Texas where I lived for the next 25 years. I have two grown sons who are married and have lives and families of their own. My current husband and I now live in a small town in Arkansas with our dachshund Shabar. I owned and antiques and collectibles shop but closed it down in September 2013 after having a heart attack. I still buy and sell antiques and collectibles and make handmade natural gemstone jewelry which we sell at shows and festivals. I don't recall ever not knowing that there was more than just us out there. My first experience happened when I was a young child and was visited by my godfather "Grandpa Clyde" at the time of his death and for three weeks after that. I have seen one other full bodied apparition in my life and had several other minor experiences that left me scratching my head.I am not an investigator but have a huge thirst for knowledge. I am always looking up this or that legend, myth or story I hear or sometimes I just have random thoughts and look them up to see if anyone else thinks the same way. I am very analytically minded and always like to get to the bottom of things.

The Dingonek, West Africa’s “Jungle Walrus”
By Sara Fawley

9 to 18 feet long, covered in scales with a scorpion-like tail filled with deadly poison the Dingonek is one of the more fearsome cryptids. Also known as the “Jungle Walrus” due to the huge canines protruding from it’s mouth that is in a square head with a large horn protruding from the center of it. This semi-aquatic creature is said to inhabit the creeks, rivers and lakes of Western Africa primarily in the area that was formerly known as Zaire. This creature is said to be extremely vicious and territorial. It is claimed that it hunts crocodiles, hippos, monkeys, humans or basically anything that ventures into it’s territory.

The most noted sighting of the creature was in 1907 by explorer John Alfred Jordan who is said to have shot at but not killed the creature in the River Maggori in Kenya. The story goes that Jordan was hunting along the shores of the river with native Lumbwa guides. His guides came and told him they had just seen a Dingonek in the river and took him to the location. The natives described it at a cross between a sea serpent, a whale and a leopard. Jordan described it as being 14 to 15 feet long with a head as big as a lioness but shaped and marked like a leopard, two long white fangs sticking straight down from it’s up jaw, back as broad as a hippo and scaled like an armadillo. He also stated that it had reptilian like claws. Being frightened, Jordan shot the creature behind one of it’s ears. The beast sprang up out of the water, standing up on it’s tail. Jordan and the Lumbwa ran in fear for their lives.

Jordan’s story was recounted in a book by Edgar Bronson in 1910. There are many word of mouth tales that have been passed down for generations among the natives of Western Africa and to this day there are claims of sightings. If it were just the stories this would be easy to put in the category of myth or wives tale except there is one curious side note. In a cave at Brackfontein Ridge in South Africa there is said to be a painting of an unknown creature that fits the description of the Dingonek to a tee right down to the walrus like tusks.

So is Dingonek a real creature or just a myth passed down through local native tribes to keep the children away from the river banks? Is it a mis-identification of a known creature? Is it several myths and legends put together? Since there has not really been any investigation into the creature that I have found we cannot be sure. One thing is for certain, the locals of the region believe.

BELIAL

By: Christopher “Lobo” Ostrowski

Demonology Team chair

“Belial means “without a master”, and symbolizes true independence, self-sufficiency, and personal accomplishment. Belial represents the earth element.” – “The Satanic Bible”
Anton LaVey (1969) Book of Belial: introduction

Of the Christianity, Judaism or Islam, has heard of Belial. He is Second on to Lucifer in the Hierarchy of Hell. Boys that did have the a Bris/Circumcision were called the “Sons of Belial”.

It is believed that Belial was Created as an Archangel right after Lucifer and helped Lucifer start the rebellion in Heaven. This made him one of the first angels cast out.

In Recent Movies:
More recent adaptations have taken Belial in many ways, sometimes only using the name.
The classic 1922 film Nosferatu says that the titular vampire originated from “Belial’s seed,” implying Belial’s hand in the creation of vampires.
One of the possessing demons in the later film The Exorcism of Emily Rose claims to be Belial, in this case possessing a small child.

In Literature:
Belial also figures in John Milton’s Paradise Lost (1667). There, he is the Fallen Angel responsible for making “atheists” of priests, including the sons of Eli. In Book II of Paradise Lost, Milton depicts Belial as handsome and smooth-tongued, but one who realizes that the war against Heaven is dangerous and hopeless of success. Thus, he counsels sloth and ease. His hope is that if Hell does not provoke Heaven further, that the fallen angels may grow accustomed to the pains and fires of the underworld, and live in comfort. Belial does not advise seeking forgiveness or pleading for mercy from the heavenly victor.

Master of the Earth:
Now, let’s get to the Demonolatry side of the story.
Belial is The Sixty-eighth Spirit. He is a Mighty and a Powerful King. He appears in the Form of Two Beautiful Angels sitting in a Chariot of Fire. He speaks with a Seductive Voice. He gives excellent Familiars, and governs 80 Legions of Spirits/Demons. King Belial must have Offerings, Sacrifices and Gifts presented to him by the Demonolater, or else he will not give True Answers. Remember, He is a King, treat him with respect.

Belial is the carnal side of man, the lust, sex, pleasure and therefore the principal drives that make living worthwhile. People derive all the principal emotions of the higher ego from Belial: Pride comes from self-control and suppression of Belial’s influence. Strength, pleasure and independence come from embracing it. Belial is the Master of the Earth, the force that holds Humankind by its short hairs, any security or stability are results of lessons learnt from dealing with Him.

Belial is the champion of simply being human, for the flesh, the material and the carnal. In essence, a reverence for Belial affirms how “good” the flesh/humanity is. Unrestrained by law or morality; lawless; immoral; dissolute; lewd; lascivious, Unrestrained; uncurbed; uncontrolled; unruly; riotous; ungovernable; wanton; profligate; dissolute; lax; loose; sensual; impure; unchaste; lascivious; immoral, dissolute indulgence in sensual pleasure.

Belial is an excellent spirit to work with if you want a promotion or a new and better career entirely

Hershey Park

By: Christopher “Lobo” Ostrowski

Hersheypark
Hersheypark is a family theme park situated in Derry Township, Pennsylvania, United States, about 15 miles east of Harrisburg, and 95 miles west of Philadelphia. – Wikipedia
Address: 100 Hersheypark Dr, Hershey, PA 17033
Opened: May 30, 1906
Area: 121 acres
Phone: (800) 437-7439
Owner: Hershey Entertainment and Resorts Company
Roller coasters: 13
Water rides: 14

Hershey Park was created by Milton S. Hershey, in 1907, as an outdoor recreation center for his factory workers. The park was an ideal setting for picnicking and boating (“Hershey, The Sweetest Place on Earth”). In the years following, amenities were added including a swimming pool, an outdoor amphitheater, and rides. Admission to the park was free, but the attractions had a pay-as-you-ride policy.

Pools were added in 1929. These were located across from the “Chocolate World” attraction. The story goes that over the years, several kids drowned in the pools. In the 1970’s, these where filled in and all that remains are Lighthouses that were located nearby. There have been reports over the years of children, in old swimming attire, running where the pools once stood.

Night Watchmen have smelled the distinct odor of Cigars. It is a known fact that Milton S. Hershey was a connoisseur of cigars, possibly checking in on the progress of his creation.

Another story of that Night Watchman is The Grand Carousel, with its lights ablaze and the Wurlitzer Military Band Organ piping out “Let Me Call You Sweetheart,” revolving in the wee hours of the night.

In the 1970’s, several tracts of house where bought up from the surrounding land for an expansion. An Elderly women, stressed from the pressure to sell her house, committed suicide from the “Kissing Tower”.
Today people buying French Fries, at the stand nearby, claim to hear her moans and cries for help.

During that expansion period, new rides were installed including the SooperDooperLooper, the first looping rollercoaster on the East Coast. This was plagued with issues from the start. During its Inaugural run, July 4, 1977, the coaster broke down, with the park’s CEO in the front seat, stranding the passengers on the lift hill. All the VIPs had to climb out of the train and walk down the precarious catwalks to safety.

On August 25, 1977, William Harter, a sixteen-year-old Lebanon High School senior, was in a vocational training program, working at Hersheypark as a maintenance man. Harter was working on the SooperDooperLooper, removing bolts from a magnetic control device switch which normally stops the train. He was standing between the track’s rails with his back towards the train. The train suddenly started to move and ran over him. There are reports of seeing him walking the tracks at all ours. Still making sure the ride functions

Perspective [per-spek-tiv]: Noun – A technique of depicting volumes and spatial relationships on a flat surface.

Ever see one of those pictures where someone is holding up the Leaning Tower of Pizza or squishing the sun with their fingers. What you are seeing is a camera trick playing with perspectives. It’s the same reason we can cover the moon or sun with our hands. Obviously, each one of those objects is larger than our hand but we can block them out with such a small object.
Perspective also plays with shadows. Being in the paranormal field, a lot of our work is inherently done in darkness. We often get claims of shadows. A light source close to a small object can cast a large shadow. This is shown sometimes in a comedic manner in cartoons.

What does this mean to us? As paranormal investigators, we may from time to time also get shown pictures from people and asked to analyze those or get the “what do you see?” question asked of us. Part of the analysis we do should take perspective into account. If we get a claim of “See the figure in the door” yet the supposed figure is perhaps half the size of the door or larger, we know there’s most likely another issue such as pareidolia happening. The face in the mirror that covers the full dresser sized mirror is like caused by a combination of smudges and reflections. The large batman shaped shadow may be from your cat or kitten playing close to a light source.

Keep perspectives in mind when you’re analyzing photos and you’ll find more and more normal causes for the alleged paranormal.

Think, ask questions, analyze and re-create.

terThe Bunyip is one of the most fascinating of the water cryptids. This is not necessarily because of any special abilities or features it has but because the descriptions of the creature are so varied, Although Aboriginal accounts of the creature date back to the early 1800’s, the descriptions are all remarkably different even among the Aboriginal tribes from region to region.

Bunyip translates to “devil” or “spirit”. Judging by Aboriginal accounts of the creature this is fitting. In legend it is said to be a ferocious creature that will sneak up on unsuspecting people and devour them. It is said to emit terrifying, bloodthirsty howls before pouncing on it’s hapless victims. On the other hand, modern accounts of the creature report it as being docile and shy of humans, often retreating quickly when spotted and apparently an herbivore as it has been spotted graingon grasses and trees along the shoreline.

Physical descriptions of the animal vary even more. The descriptions of size range from enormous to being the size of a large dog, and everything in between. It is either smooth skinned, covered in hair or has feathers. Reports of it’s body range from like a hippopotamus to an ox to a dog. The head has been described as like a dog with large protruding tusks, the head of a horse and even a head and neck like an emu. It’s habitat varies from swamps to lakes to inland. The only thing really tying all of these sightings together is that the bulk of the reports are from the area around Lake George and Lake Bathurst., although a few do come from other areas.

In 1848, an unnamed Aboriginal from the Murray River region drew a picture of the Bunyip. The picture depicted a large animal with the body of a hippopotamus and the head of a horse. In that same time period another Aboriginal, this gentleman from the Victoria area also drew a picture. His picture showed a large animal with the head and neck of an emu.

One incident of note is that in 1847 a skull was found an reported to be that of a Bunyip. It was displayed at the Australian Museum in Sydney. The exhibit lasted a mere two days before quietly being shut down amid controversy surrounding it’s authenticity. At this same time an article was published in the Sydney Morning Herald regarding the skull. After the appearance of the article , people stepped forward in droves to report their own terrifying encounters with the creature.

How can one creature that has been reported over centuries have such a widely varied description? There are a couple of theories on that. One is that any unidentified animal spotted in proximity to these areas is being reported as a Bunyip. Many of these cases are most likely misidentification of known animals. Some could be seals, alligators, possibly even an actual dog taking a swim, or any other number of local animals whose sudden appearance in the water, at a distance could fool someone who wasn’t used to seeing it into thinking they had witnessed something remarkable.

Another theory, this one mainly dealing with the Aboriginal tales and variances in description is that it could be “cultural memories”. As with any indigenous peoples the Aboriginals have strong cultural practices which include the passing down of lore and legend through word of mouth stories. Thousands of years ago before the first outside settlers arrived, the indigenous peoples of Australia shared the outback with Mega fauna such as the Diprotodon, a giant wombat like creature that could weigh up to 2 tons. Stories of the Diprotodon and other mega fauna passed down through story and song could be the basis for the rarely seen Bunyip of Aboriginal legend and could explain the differences in descriptions. Tribes in different areas would not necessarily have the same creatures to deal with.

Other possible theories as to what the creature could possibly be include the doyarchu (Irish Crocodile), giant otter, undiscovered aquatic marsupial, an undiscovered species of freshwater seal, an Australian fur seal ( which is known to emit a loud cry like that attributed to the Bunyip), the Procoptodon (a giant kangaroo whose fossils have been found in the area) and the above mentioned Diprotodon,

So what is the answer? With so many widely varying descriptions it is impossible to say for sure. Most likely there is some truth in most, if not all of the theories. Sightings have tapered off over the years and while most Australians keep the Bunyip in the category of myth and legend that does not mean it has been forgotten. The National Library of Australia sponsors a traveling exhibition on Bunyips, there are several stories on the government websites about the creature and a set of four postage stamps commemorating this long time Australian legend have been issued. While it may never be proved it will ever live in the memories and folklore of Australia.

What is an Ossuary?

Before we talk about the specifics of this artifact, let’s first talk a little bit about what an ossuary is. Ossuaries are small stone (usually limestone) chests in which the bones of the dead were placed after the flesh had decayed. They were very popular in the Jewish community during the Second Temple perior (40 BCE – 135 CE.) These “bone boxes” are generally 2 ½ feet long in order to accommodate the longest bone in the human body ( the adult leg bone.) They taper slightly at the bottom, have flat or vaulted lids and have designs chip-carved or chisled on the outsides. Some do have a red of yellow wash of paint but most decorations ( plants, buildings, animals) were carved. Many contain inscriptions carved on the side in either Hebrew, Aramic or Greek. The incription generally consisted of the name and status in the family of the person whose bones were interred. .

The emergence of the James Ossuary

In 2001 Oded Golan, a Tel Aviv antiquities collector, announced that he had possesion of a stone ossuary which bore the Aramic inscription “Yaakov bar Yosef akhui di Yeshua” which translates in English to “James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus”. Many biblical scholars and archeaologists went wild. Finally there was solid proof (albiet circumstancial) of the existence of Jesus of Nazereth’s existence. If then inscription held true, then this was the “bone box” of “James the Just” Apostle and brother to Jesus.

The inscription was validated by two of the world’s leading paleographers (experts in authenticating and dating inscriptions based on the shape and stance of the letters) Andre Lemaire of the Sorbonne and Ada Yardeni of the Hebrew University. The ossuary and inscription were also examined and authenticated by the Geological Survey of Isreal(GSI) and Father Joseph Fitzmyer ( the world’s leading expert in Aramic).

In October of 2002 the ossuary was displayed at the Royal Ontario Museum in Canada. Thousands of sholars and the general public flocked to the museum to see it.

The Controversy

In 2003, Oded Golan and four other gentlemen were arrested and charged with fraud and forgery of antiquities including the James Ossuary. The ossuary was seized by the Israel Antiquities Authority and tested by a panel of experts appointed by the authority. This panel included Professor Yuval Goren clay expert at the University of Tel Aviv. Goren reported that he had found fake patina added to the “brother of Jesus” portion of the inscription and that it had been added to the ossuary at a later date than the original portion of the inscription. This was disputed by Mr Golan’s supporters.

The Outcome

In 2005 the trial of Oded Golan for fraud and forgery of many antiquites including the James Ossuary began. The trial 138 witnesses, more than 400 exhibits and over 12,000 pages of testimony. Both sides provided many experts for and against the authenticity of inscription. In 2012, after 7 years of trial, Oded Golan was aquitted of all forgery charges. He was convicted and fined for some lesser charges such as selling antiquities without a license.
What Does This All Mean?

So does this mean the James Ossuary is without a doubt the “bone box” of James the Just? Not necessarily. In the judgement handed down it was made clear that the judgement was in no way authenticating any of the artifacts in question. The judgement simply provides that the prosecution did not prove by a preponderance of evidence that Oded Golan participated or was aware of any forgery or fraud in connection with the named antiquities. Both sides of the issue still have their experts and scholars who stand firmly behind their argreement or objection to the aunthenticity of the artifact.

The bottom line is even if the inscription were proven to be 100 % authentic this does not necessarily mean that the James inscribed on the box is actually James the Just. James, Joseph and Jesus were all very common names in that time period. Many argue that the odds of there being another James who had a father named Joseph and a brother named Jesus in the same time period are astronomical but the fact remains that it is still a very real possibility. Without a provenance of where the box came from (Golan aquired it in the 1970’s but has always been evasive as to from where) we may never know.

Shin-Au-Av; Death Valley’s Underground City
Death Valley, California

For more than a hundred years there has been a legends of the “Ghost land”, also translated to “God’s Land” by the Paiute Native Tribe. According to this legend, Shin-Au-Av was created when Shin-au-av-akaits was told to take a sealed sacked to the middle of the land and open it. Shin-au-av-akaits was young and curiosity got the best of him. When he could wait no longer, he opened the sack allowing hordes of people to escape the sack into the desert. As these people began to run toward the mountains another Godly figure named Tov-wots yelled, rather angrily, “Why have you done this? I wanted these people to live in the land to the east, and here, foolish boy, you have let them out in a desert.” These people, in the legend, reportedly began to dig a tunnel in order to hide for safety. And those the legend of the Death Valley Underground City of Shin-Au-Av.

In 1947, this legend became reborn thanks to a report in the San Diego Union dated August 4. This article appears to mention everything from mummies, ancient markings, signs of an ancient civilization structure and even giants!
According to the article, a man by the name of Howard E. Hill spoke in front of the Transportation Club. Mr. Hill said that a man named Dr. F. Bruce Russell had locate tunnels underneath Death Valley in 1931 and now, with the help of Dr. Daniel S. Bovee, the tunnels are going to be explored and documented. Mr. Hill also stated that crews have removed mummies from the caverns along with giants that were estimated, at the site, to be 80,000 years old.

Howard Hill also stated that he found a ritual hall that had markings and devices similar to what was then being used by the Masonic Order. Along with those findings were, as he stated, remains of animals such as elephants and tigers but it lacked any female remains of any kind.

Mr. Hill ends his speech by stating that a Dr. Viola V. Pettit from London will begin an inspection of the remains.

To add to this legend, the next day, an article was posted in the Hot Citizen Nevada Paper titled ‘Expedition Reports Nine-Foot Skeletons’ in which it was stated that many people were skeptical of Hill’s claims. Even to this day there is question about the existence of Giants and hidden artifacts related to these underground tunnels along with many other places. Some view this as just an exaggerated story while others consider it to be evidence that there is more out there, and possibly being hidden, than citizens can even begin to figure out!

This question comes up quite often – Do we have any authentic photos of ghosts that we can show? The answer is unfortunately no.

For the following reasons, no matter what any expert has said, there are no authenticated ghost photos in existence:

FIRST – Ghosts are not proven to exist. It is impossible to say there is definitely a ghost in a photo if we are not even sure they exist. Until we have proven scientifically that ghosts exist, we can’t say there is one in a photo.

If we ever do get that scientific proof, it is ONLY then that we might be able to photograph a ghost, which would give us an authenticated ghost photo with which to compare.

SECOND – It is impossible to say for sure that a supposed photo of a ghost is genuine and unaltered. There are tell-tale signs of a fake, but if those signs are absent, we still can’t be sure. With the quality of the softwares and talented graphic artists we have today, there can be some really convincing fakes. If only they would use their powers for good! 🙂

THIRD – Even if there is a strange image in a photo that we can’t explain and we are sure the photo is not fake, we STILL cannot say it is anything paranormal. There are so many variables that go into still photography of which we have little control, such as light values, angles, motion, air particulates and other environmental factors, etc. Due to these variables, sometimes we will get weird images in photos – weird, but completely normal images. This is especially true of cell, computer and tablet cameras, which are even more notorious for creating weird images.

We hear it quite often – someone will say they had their photo authenticated by a photo expert.

Well…what does that really mean? – No expert of any kind can do this. No seasoned investigators and not even a professional photographer can do it.

What can they do then? – Experts do have knowledge of known factors that create certain anomalies in photos. They do have softwares to use that can scan a photo for irregularities and they can look at the EXIF info of the photo. All of these methods CAN give some clues as to the authenticity of a photo, but these methods are not fool proof by any means.

The most any expert can say is that a photo does not appear to have been manipulated. In that statement, there is quite a bit of wiggle room.

Any person that calls themselves an expert and then tells you your photo definitely has a ghost in it is not really an expert. Any person who has real, extensive knowledge of photography and photographic softwares would NEVER tell you this.

Kongamato, the African Dragon

By: Tamara Ortiz

Hello Paranormal Seekers,

There is an unknown creature reported to be seen flying through the skies in Africa. This creature is said to be the Kongamato (less known names of Oliatau or Sasabonsam), Kongamato meaning “overwhelmer of boats” or “breaker of boats”. Although most reports come out of Africa, there have been sightings of the Kongamato in North America, Australia and parts of Europe. Some speculate that the Kongamato is an ancestor of the pterodactyl.

Pterodactyl – a pterosaur of the late Jurassic period, with a long slender head and neck and a very short tail

Pterosaur – an extinct warm-blooded flying reptile of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, with membranous wings supported by a greatly lengthened fourth finger, and probably covered with fur.

There are several descriptions of the Kongamato but most individuals describe a very large flying creature with reddish, brownish skin, some report feathers. They go on to describe a long neck, a long tail, pointy ears and a very large wingspan.

In 1925 a well-known British newspaperman, G. Ward Price and the Duke of Windsor learned of individuals that had been attached by a giant flying creature in Africa. Price interviewed the victims and showed them a picture of a pterodactyl, the victims stated that this was the creature that attacked them.

In 1956 an engineer by the name of J.P.F. Brown reported seeing two prehistoric looking creatures flying over Fort Rosebery, Zambia. Brown reported that the creatures had long tails, narrow necks, teeth and a wingspan of 3 and ½ feet. A year later in 1957 a man was treated for a chest wound at the Fort Rosebery Hospital ER; his report of the creature that had attached him was very similar to Brown’s report.

In 1988 cryptozoologist, biologist, vice-president of the International Society of Cryptozoology and Scientific Director of the Loch Ness Phenomena Investigation Bureau between 1965 and 1975 Roy Mackal PhD led an expedition into Namibia in search of the Kongamato because of reports he had read and studied. There was no hard evidence produced from this expedition but a team member, James Kosi reported to have seen the Kongamato at about 1000 feet above him.

There are many cryptozoologists that continue to search for evidence of this amazing cryptid. So if your ever find yourself in Kongamato territory, make sure you keep an eye to the sky in search of this illusive creature, do this to catch glimpse but also to stay safe, for it is said by many tribes in Africa that the Kongamato is very strong and can pick you up and carry you away.

CROWS, RAVENS, AND RAUM

By: Christopher “Lobo” Ostrowski
Demonology Team Chair

Last night, I had a wonderful conversation with a person that was wondering about seeing large Black Birds (the nature type. Not Conspiracy Theory type).Could these be Demons? Can, indeed Demons shapeshift in to other creatures? Can a demon be bound to a location to repeatedly haunt it?

It has been my experience that they can change their appearance. Marbas is one that comes to mind. He is said to have a Head of a Lion and the body of a man. This can cause a lot of fear in the practitioner. This is especially true when he speaks with his powerful voice. The Summoner can request that he appears in a less frightening state.
This can also be the opposite. If the Summoner is requesting the Demon to appear threatening to an adversary, the Demon can choose to do so.
As I have found, in my experiences, Demons don’t Haunt on their own accord. They generally have a reason. Once the reason is done, so is the “haunting”. Demons are not bound to the Earth as a Spirit might be. Think of a Demon as you would a Deity, more or less. You wouldn’t find an Angel bound to a specific spot on Earth. Therefore, why would a Demon?
Trust me, if they stayed bound, my house would look like the Haunted House at Disney World.

In Demonolatry, They have no real need to Haunt humans. Lucifer is a big on Free Will. To scare someone would do the opposite. It would turn you away and toward “God”. IF, like the Bible says, he is so opposed to “God”, why push you towards “God”?

Now, I will get back to the Big Black Birds.

There are numerous accounts of “Black Birds” in Mythos all over the world.

Odin, or Norse/Teutonic Myths has two, Huginn and Muninn. Their names mean “Knowledge and Memory”. They are said to fly the Nine Worlds and bring him reports

In the Celtic Traditions, The Morrígan (“phantom queen”) or Mórrígan (“great queen”), also known as Morrígu, is often associated with Crows and Ravens.

In Native American Totem Animals; Ravens wisdom includes introspection, courage, self-knowledge, magic, healing, creation, rebirth, keeper of secrets, master magician, shape-shifter, mysticism.
Now to Raum.

Raum is a Great Earl in Hell. He commands 30 Legions. His appearance is that of a Great Raven. But, at the request of the Summoner, will assume a human form. His abilities are stealing riches from Kings, to destroy Cities and Dignities of Men, and to tell all things, Past , Present, and Future. He will also cause Love between Friends and Foes.
He would be one to call upon when you back is against the wall by someone more powerful or influential then you. To summon for learning knowledge of events that are to come.

His “Stealing of Riches” can also be interpreted as stealing of knowledge and secrets. So all of this this would make him and his Legion very formidable against some much bigger then you. Raum is extremely helpful in legal battles against large conglomerates.

It must be noted that Members of the Corvus Family (Crows, Ravens, Bluejays), have extremely well developed memories, can learn to make tools, and have facial recognition abilities. Mourn and bury their dead. They also remember people that have been good to them, and those that mistreat them. They are NOTORIOUS for stealing shiny objects.

Maybe this is a reason why we have collective nouns like; “A Murder of Crows” and “An Unkindness of Ravens”.

Just something to think about before you chase birds away with stones and brooms.

THE U.S. HOTEL

By: Christopher “Lobo” Ostrowski

THE U.S. HOTEL

Address: 401 S Juniata St, Hollidaysburg, PA 16648
Phone:(814) 695-2624
Hours: Open today · 11AM–11PM

The U.S. Hotel is open every day for food service. Plus, the bar is popular with locals also.
Built back in 1835 this historic location has its own history, along with legends and ghost sightings.

The U.S. Hotel located in historic Hollidaysburg (just one block off the Pennsylvania Rte. 22 at Wayne and S. Juniata Streets) is known throughout Central Pennsylvania as the mysterious haunted hotel. It has been the backdrop for several TV and Local Paranormal Investigative teams.

The original hotel was built in historic Hollidaysburg, PA, by John Dougherty, in 1835.The hotel has since had many different owners and at one point during World War II the Navy set up a radio school. Over time the hotel fell into a state of disrepair and the original relics that once sparkled and shined eventually were destroyed. Luckily Karen and Jason Yoder looked beyond the dust and debris when they decided to purchase the U.S. Hotel and bring it to its former grandeur of days gone by.

The business has been closed again Jan. 1, 2013, when former owner Karen Yoder signed over the deed to the property to Altoona First Savings Bank to avoid foreclosure.
Local building contractor Don Delozier, Has since purchased the U.S. Hotel Restaurant & Tavern.
Ghost hunters from all over have investigated the entire hotel. Interviewing customers and the owners and dug deep into the history while attempting to establish a reason why ghosts would inhabit the hotel. One report was of an answer came in the form of a unexpected panic attack causing one investigator that ran out of an upstairs room. They had witnessed an apparition of a pretty woman with long auburn hair lying on a bed in a room completely and utterly writhing in pain and holding her head.

Another report of a group witnessed the shadow of a male ghost carrying an axe. He is believed to be a man stabbed mortally in a bar fight. It is believe he roams the halls looking for vengeance.

The upstairs is no longer taking overnight guests that are among the living. It seems there is an abundance of guests that are permanent residences.

Customers have reported seeing ghosts walk through the banquet hall in period dress. Plates and glasses fall in the kitchen area.

It is said that when parties are held. People can here walking and laughing on the staircase, as if the non-visible residents are coming to join the festivities.

Ladies have reported that there is a “filthy” looking man that watches them lecherously.

Some have seen a bride looking frantically for her lost lover. It is believed that she might be the same woman that is seen in pain on the bed. It is rumored that she committed suicide after being left at the aisle.

Reports of Murder Suicides are believed to be the basis for some of the children that reported to roam the halls and play tricks on patrons. Keys disappear and reappear. People report hair being touched. Giggling and running in the empty areas.

This really seems to be a “Hot Spot” for activity and might be a location to investigate further.

Approximately 2,100 years ago, a massive ship was caught in a storm off the coast of the Greek island of Antikythera. The ship was heavily laden with fabulous Greek treasures of bronze figurines, bronze coins, fine glassware, amphorae, marble statues, silver coins and more.

Fast forward to early 1900 AD. A group of sponge divers were caught in a storm and sought refuge near an island off the coast of the Greek island of Antikythera. There the sponge divers dove into the waters and discovered a shipwreck that contained extraordinary treasure. Among all of these beautiful things was what turned out to be one of the greatest treasures of all: The Antikythera Mechanism. This mechanism has been hailed as the first computer ever devised. It was also used as a celestial calendar, predicting lunar and solar eclipses and providing astrological forecasts. There was a ball of silver and black for the tracking of the moon phases.

Throughout the time after this discovery, many scientists, including Jacques Cousteau (in 1976) were instrumental in retrieving many more artifacts from the shipwreck. But The Antikythera Mechanism itself, was considered the best of the find. It’s remains were found in one lump, looking much like a piece of rock, (later it was divided into three parts, now separated into 82 carefully catalogued pieces). It took modern scientists many years to be able to see inside the artifact due to the fragileness of the pieces. It wasn’t until 2006 when The Antikythera Mechanism was given a computed tomography scan, revealing more of what was hidden inside.

This shoebox sized artifact contained a very complex system of 30 intricate bronze gear wheels used to run a system that displayed the date, positions of the sun and the moon, the positions of the zodiac, lunar phases, a 19-year calendar and a 223-month eclipse prediction dial. The timing for the artifact was set to begin in the year 205 BC. The Ancient Greeks used complex arrangements of precisely cut wheels, with precisely cut triangular teeth ( just like the gears inside of a clock) and a ring divided into degrees (like a protractor). The calendar represented a 360 day year, divided into12 months of 30 days each, plus a five day period which corresponded with the Greek-Egyptian calendar. Like a clock, the housing of this artifact would have a large circular face with rotating hands. Located on the side there would have been a knob for winding the mechanism forward or backward. As this handle was turned, gear wheels drove at least seven hands at various speeds. Instead of hours and minutes, it registered celestial time. Unfortunately, most of the seven hands have never been recovered.

Researchers have found there were once dials present, as well as decorative, but functional pieces (now long gone) as noted in inscriptions found inside the mechanism. This also tells us they carried colored balls: fiery red for Mars and gold for the sun. The dial that represented the zodiac is a 360 degree dial divided into the 12 signs of the zodiac. The planetary dials listed the five planets that were visible to the naked eye at that time: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. The Antikythera Mechanism made astronomical predictions as well and, even predicted when the next Olyimpad would take place.

How did the Ancient Greeks have the necessary technical skills to create such an intricate mechanism? The doubters felt there was no way civilization could have come far enough to create something like this mechanism. There are plenty of researchers that say modern science does not give our ancestors enough credit. New analysis of the Antikythera Mechanism shows the 30 precise, hand-cut bronze gears to be more advanced than previously thought. So much so, that making anything comparable to the Antikythera Mechanism would take another 1,000 years.

Symbolic Languages Used for Secrecy in the Occult

By: Tamara Ortiz

Hello Paranormal Seekers,

You will find that many practitioners of the occult will keep what is known as a “Book of Shadows”, the book will contain very important information regarding ingredients, incantations, rituals and things of this nature. The book of shadows for most practitioners is a very private affair and is usually not shared with anyone unless the practitioner is part of an origination, convent and or temple of some kind. Then the book is usually shared amongst its members but they will all keep the secrets known in the book of shadows. With the secrecy surrounding a practitioner’s book of shadows, more often than not the practitioner will write in some kind of symbolic language to further aid in keeping the information secret.

There are many different symbolic languages out there that are known and used. Practitioners will even spend years developing their own coded symbolic language that is known only to them. I am going to point out only three symbolic languages today, the Celtic Oracular alphabet, Enochian alphabet and the Theban alphabet. I use all three in certain rituals and when writing in my book of shadows.

The Theban Alphabet (also known as the Witches Alphabet or Runes of Honorius)

The age of the Theban alphabet is unknown, and what we do know of its origins is pure speculation. The first documentation of the Theban alphabet appeared in Cornelius Agrippa’s “Three Books of Occult Philosophy” published in 1531. In the third book of the series, Agrippa attributes the alphabet to Honorius of Thebes but there are no known works proving this theory. Also the letters “J”, “U” and “W” were not a part of the original alphabet and appear approximately at the beginning of the 20th century. The Theban alphabet adopted the name witches alphabet because the symbols are carved onto stone or wood and used in a similar way for divination like witches runes. This alphabet is often used in the creation of charms and talisman.

Enochian Alphabet

Enochian alphabet first appears in history around the 16th century. Occultist Dr. John Dee and his associate Sir Edward Kelly reported to have conducted hundreds of communication sessions with angels from 1581-1585. The results of these communication sessions became what is known as the Enochian alphabet. This alphabet is often used in what is known as Enochian magic.

The Celtic Oracular Alphabet (also known as Ogham)

The Celtic Ogham alphabet appears around the fourth century. This alphabet received its name from the Celtic god known as Ogmos, god of communication and knowledge. What makes this alphabet standout from the other two is each symbol has sub meanings. Such as the symbol standing for the letter “B” also represents the Birch tree and stands for purification, cleansing and new beginnings. All twenty symbols of the Celtic Ogham alphabet represent a letter, a different tree and have a divination purpose.

There are very many alphabets and symbolic languages out there. I would love for you to share any language or symbols you may use. Please share the history and mysteries found surrounding these symbols.

Liberia Plantation – Manassas, VA

By:  Kent Daniel S. Villavicencio

“ I grew up on the property that used to belong to Liberia Plantation. When I was a small child, I used to tell my parents that I would see figures in the house, and they wrote it off as ‘overactive imagination’. It wasn’t my imagination. I knew I was seeing a woman in a torn dress looking at me for help. In August 2006, I was 16 years old. I was a rebellious teenager who looked like I had just walked out on Halloween. It was a Sunday morning. Mom and my brother were still asleep, and dad was out on a run. I decided to use the down time in the house to do my laundry. I walked down into the basement (which gave everybody the creeps. My dog wouldn’t even go down there without somebody.) and turned the corner. Standing in my laundry room, was a tall cloaked…thing. There was no other way to describe it. A tall, cloaked, black thing. Almost like how they described the grim reaper. I screamed but was frozen from fear. The thing ran through the wall, and I haven’t seen it since.
The cloaked thing wasn’t the only paranormal experience at my house. My dog would bark at the wall, but it was the kind of barking that made people see the pit bull in him. I would come over and calm him down, but he would stand between the wall and myself almost in a protective stance. I saw shadows at night that weren’t supposed to be there. I was hearing footsteps going and coming when everybody was in bed. The floating smell of lavender. Dishes clinking when nobody was in the kitchen. The biggest thing that freaked me out about these occurrences was that my neighbors all had the same things going on in their homes.”
-Amanda C.

“My sister is a firm believer in the paranormal. I used to think it was b.s. and my sister was crazy. I realized she wasn’t crazy in January of 2009. I was a young police officer in Manassas, and it had just snowed. Manassas had a tendency to shut down when it snowed, and I was excited about stopping by my parent’s house for comfort food and some down time in a warm environment. I received a call that an alarm was going off at Liberia Plantation. I headed to the old house tucked away in the woods, and met the curator of the house at the back door. The snow fell quietly as we stood on the back porch, and the curator offered to give me a tour of the house. I accepted since I had seen the house from the road, but had always been curious about the inside. The basement was creepy, and the curator told me that that’s where the bodies were placed. The main level and the second floor looked like an old farm house. The floor creaked underneath our feet as we walked around. We then went up to the attic. I remember seeing the snow on the floor of the attic and the curator explaining the massive roof repair. We both stopped when we saw the sight in front of us. Foot prints leading to the wall, but none coming back from the wall. That sent a chill up my spine. The curator made sure all the lights were off, and we locked up the door. I sat down in my cruiser to write my report, and felt something telling me to glance up. The light shone brightly from the attic onto the freshly fallen snow.”

THE SEVEN GATES OF HELL – YORK, PA

By: Christopher “Lobo” Ostrowski
NPS Demonology Department Chair

In the Township of Hellam sits one of the biggest mysteries in York Pa.,“The Seven Gates of Hell”. It was the subject of one of Mike Argento’s York Daily Record columns http://ydr.inyork.com/

several years ago and can even be found on ‘Wikipedia’ www.wikipedia.com

, an encyclopedia web site.

In the 1800s a colossal mental asylum stood in the woods of York off Toad Road. Buried in the desolate Pennsylvania woods, it was viewed as the perfect place to ship the insane from all across the state. This was a nightmare straight from Hell. It was home of only the most deranged, most unfortunate souls in PA.

The area is an overgrown wooded area off Trout Run Road in the northwestern part of the Township. I will show rumors that are attached to the area. Supposedly an insane asylum located there caught fire. The patients did manage to get out of the Building, but seven gates surrounding the asylum trapped them. The scene was pure horror. Some of the most deranged and dangerous people in all Pennsylvania had disappeared into the woods as the Asylum burned spread throughout the area. When the fire was finally under control, officials set out to corral all of the inmates. Frightened of the asylum’s inmates reputations and unsure of how to handle the patients, the search party was aggressive with extreme prejudice. There where reports of beating into submission some of those they found and killing others. To this day, no one in York acknowledges this publicly. The ones that survived, reportedly lived on to stalk and murder behind the Seven Gates

Another story Is a typical “Mad Doctor” story. An eccentric local doctor Is said to have erected a large gate at the entrance to his property. Then the rumors sprang up that there was a series of gates. They were all beyond that large one along Toad Road (cue scary music) leading deep into the woods. Out of the Seven Gates, it is believed that no-one who passed the fifth gate ever returned.

Apparitions are often seen along these paths. Strange noises and menacing screams are heard frequently.
The official statement on the The Hellam Township Website, listed below is:
“Just as there seems to be no truth to the rumors about the “Seven Gates of Hell” (no asylum ever existed there, and the local doctor had only one gate and that was to keep out trespassers), there is also no truth to the story that Hellam Township was named for ‘hell’! The fact is that our Township’s name is a corruption of the name ‘Hallam’, named for Hallam, England.”

Mysteries of the City of Cahokia

Located just outside of St. Louis, Illinois is the Cahokia Mounds. Most people, outside of the St. Louis areas, are not aware of a rather mysterious archeological treasure right under their nose! Cahokia is one of of only eight World Heritage sites in North America and by some miracle it still has survived through the development of the areas.

Sitting at about 4,000 acres, 2,200 of which are a preserved state historic site, Cahokia Mounds is classified as the largest archaeological site in the United States. It is believed that the civilization that created Cahokia dates back to around 700 A.D. The site consists of at least 104 individual mounds that appear to show a large and sophisticated civilization long before London or even Rome.

These mounds appear to be prior to some of the known Native tribes that later controlled the areas. It is believed, but not proven, that the Chickasaw, Seminoles and Choctaw were all descendants of the people that once inhabited Cahokia. Others lean more toward the Cherokee, Creek and Natchez being their descendants. All that is known for sure is that the Late Woodland culture inhabited this area about 700 C.E. and there appears to be approximately a 200 year gap between the Woodland Culture and the development of the Mounds.

It appears that Cahokia was slowly abandoned by late 1300 AD. Excavations appear to show no sign of any disaster, warfare or illness that could’ve caused the abandonment of Cahokia but scientists believe that overcrowding, social upheaval or inadequate supplies may have been a cause leading to the end of the Cahokia Mounds.

Not only does Cahokia have a mysterious scientific and archeological history but it also has a mysterious paranormal history. Many people have reported seeing shadows, balls of lights visible with their own eyes, along with hearing chanting or rattling on the ‘Monks Mound.’

Cahokia Mounds are still being excavated to this day and we could only hope that more information would become available concerning it. Who were the people that lived at Cahokia Mounds? Where did they come from? What could be the cause of the unexplained experiences at the Monks Mound? What happened to the tribe or civilization that lived here for so long?

The Minhocao “Big Earth Worm”

The Minhocao “Big Earth Worm”
By: Tamara Ortiz

The Minhocao, which means big earth worm in Portuguese, this creature is said to reside in the forest of South America. You will find a few descriptions of the Minhocao but the most common description of the creature resembles a giant worm or serpent like creature with black skin, a mouth full of teeth that cannot be missed and a pair tentacles that come from its head. There are some sightings that claim the Minhocao also hasa pig like snout.

The Minhocao is said to be a burrowing animal and leaves enormous trenches and holes in the earth in its wake. From reported sightings of the Minhocao and investigations of the suspected trenches and holes from the creature suggest a length of 75 to 150 feet with a body diameter up 15 feet. There have been many alleged occurrence where the Minhocao has been blamed for houses and manmade sutures caving in and rivers have had their courses altered. These occurrences will happen after a very heavy rain, suggesting that the Minhocao prefers to travel during or after these rains because the earth is made softer for them to move easily through.

Cryptozoologist Karl Shuker has a theory that the Minhocao is of the giant caecilian family, the description of the Minhocao fits this theory but the reported size of the Minhocao is much larger than the description of the giant caecilian. Bernard Heuvelmans who was known for being a scientist, explorer and research suggested that these creatures were surviving glyptodont. (Glyptodon was a large, armored mammal of the subfamily Glyptodontidae, which lived during the Pleistocene epoch.)

There are many theories surrounding the Minhocao regarding its origin and its habitat. If you ever find yourself deep in the forest of South America and it happens to be raining you may want to keep your eye out for this allusive creature for it is said the Minhocao
can swallow a man whole…but of course this is just legend or is it.

The Demon named Astaroth

By: Christopher “Lobo” Ostrowski
Demonology Team Chair

The Demon named Astaroth
The Demon Astaroth is a unique Demon. There are many different tales related to this Grand Duke of Hell.

The one I will use is the one that is more plausible to me. That Astaroth is a Female Demon.

The name Astaroth (sometimes spelled Ashtaroth) probably derives from Astarte, a Canaanite fertility goddess worshipped by the Philistines and at Sidon. She was also an early goddess among the Sumerians, known to them as the “Queen of Heaven”. In each culture, though Her Role may have slightly been different, She was always a powerful mother figure. She was a caretaker to humanity in them all. She was possibly the most worshiped deity of her time.

It is believed that the goddess Astarte has become one of the most slandered deities since modern religions took over in the Middle East. Even the name “Astaroth” is a perverted version of Astarte. It is made to sound vile, evil and shameful in the pronunciation of the old languages of the time. When the followers of the “New Religions” came into power, they wanted to remove all sympathy for the old beliefs from existence. They vilified all the reputations of the Babylonian gods and goddesses into “evil demons”.

Astaroth is something of a politician among the demons. She will counsel both humans and demons alike. But she will only help those humans who still believe in her as a goddess. It’s only fair; you must treat a Lady like Lady. She has been beaten up over the centuries, some flowers and chocolates can go a long way. She can help one gain a good reputation. She can create friendships between her followers and people with power and social status in the community. She knows all about the past, present, and future. She also can show to her followers secrets through the prophetic dreams and visions. She can also teach all about the sciences and humanities as well.

Astarte/Astaroth is said to be very tall, beautiful, and elegant with fair skin and long blonde hair. It is said that everything she does is with great ease and grace. She will only work for the greater good of those who are Her true followers. Those who wish to use her gifts to take unjustly from others will be denied her good graces.

Astaroth is said to be the Great Duchess of Hell, in the first hierarchy with Beelzebub and Lucifer; She is part of the evil trinity. To those in Demonolatry the relationship between Astaroth and Astarte can be significant because the possible connection indicates spiritual power. Such power which Modern Religions have strived to diabolize and destroy is returning to help the people.

The Secret Language of Symbols in the Occult

The Secret Language of Symbols in the Occult
By: Tamara Ortiz

Sign and symbols rule the world, not words or laws. ~ Confucius

Hello Paranormal Seekers,

Many symbols used in the Occult and for magickal purposes share similar shapes, forms, ideas, meanings and histories. Knowing the similar histories and ideas of representation behind certain shapes and images found within symbols is “The Secret Language of Symbols.” What is wonderful about symbols is even in different cultures that don’t speak the same language, there will be an understanding of symbols shared amongst these cultures. The language of symbols encompasses the very simple in design to the very complicated. It can take many years to learn but learning how to read and decipher smaller/simpler symbols will lead you to being able to decipher more complicated symbols as you further your knowledge. I am going to discuss the most common symbols circle, triangle and the square.

The CIRCLE

The circle is a symbol of boundary and enclosure, moon and sun, life and death and is found in many cultures its representation is a powerful and profound one. It represents the infinite energy of nature, and of the universe. The circle represents many things but usually the representation is the cycle of a system such as the circle of life and other representations like it. The circle can also be the visual form of the word “us” when a symbol is placed within a circle this can mean group or can even trigger are brain to be drawn into the symbol within the circle, making the viewer connect with the representation involved.

The circle represents what is spiritual and sacred in nature. In Chinese symbolism the circle expresses the heavens and when this circle is viewed within a square (the square representing the earth) this symbolizes the union between heaven and earth. The well-known symbol of yin and yang is circular; this speaks to the duality for a unified balance. Many Celtics believe circles to be symbols of protection. In Egyptian cultures the circle had many meanings but one of its most profound was the representation of the sun god. Throughout the world you can find the symbolism of the circle and its many meanings.

The TRIANGLE

The meaning of the triangle is structured in the number three, the vertical side will represent one aspect, the horizontal side another and then the two sides combining represents the hypotenuse, such as:

Mind, Body, Spirit
Past, Present, Future
Father, Son, Holy Ghost
Love, Truth, Wisdom
Waxing, Waning, Full

The triangle stands out from others shapes in its symbolism because it’s the one shape depending on your view, the meaning can change entirely. For example if a triangle is sitting flat on one of its sides it represents fire, male energy, active, up, father and solar energy but when you flip it on to its point it represents water, female energy, passive, down, mother and lunar energy. The triangle is very much tied to the number three, most practices of the occult incorporates the number three within its teachings thus represents three sides which equates to the triangle. You can find the triangle used in the Celtic culture in the form of the triskelion the triquetra and many other Celtic knots. Another well-known trinity is “Celtic Life:” Birth (renewal), Death (closure) and Life (transcendence). Triangles also represent the elements of fire, water, earth and air. Greek symbolism uses the triangle to represent to delta glyph and this is in representation of a doorway meaning through balanced thought and emotion you receive a higher knowledge.

The SQUARE

The square’s fours sides and straight lines represent foundation, structure, stability, honesty, earth, integrity, male energy and the physical realm. Buddhist believe the square represents the human and the circle represents the divine and when together this means a balance within you. The square can represent the heart in some cultures, the four sides stand for angelic, diabolic, human and divine which equals awareness and inspiration. Although more often than not the symbolism of the square has four parts, it can also represent opposites such as light and dark, up and down, physical and spiritual. In the Hindu culture, the square represents the order of the universe. It is said when you draw the square in representation of the four elements it also stabilizes the elements because of the structural properties of the square.

Other symbolic meanings of the square:
The four cardinal directions (north, south, east, west)
The four major season (winter, spring, summer, autumn)
The four cosmic elements (suns, moons, planets, stars)
The four common phases of human life (birth, child, adult, death)
The four prime elements (fire, earth, air, water)

The vast knowledge of symbols and the secret language found within is a never ending interpretation. There is so much more that can be discussed regarding this amazing secret language. Even the shapes and the symbolism I have discussed today could go so much further and deeper into what they mean, there use in the occult and the history from which they came.

So…When you see a single shape, do you see the symbolism behind it? If so then you speak the secret language of symbols!

New Findings in the Drake Equation

Stephanie Kelly
Stephanie Kelly

Latest posts by Stephanie Kelly (see all)

By: Stephanie Kelly

In 1961, a man by the name of Dr. Frank Drake developed an equation in the attempt to get the Scientific Community talking about the possibility of civilizations other than on earth. To put it simple; the equation was originally meant to summarize the main concepts that scientists must think about when considering unexplained and questionable radio communication.

This equation, N = R* x fp x ne x fe x fi x fc x L, contains many variables including:
N – the total number of civilizations in the Milky Way
R – the average rate of star formation
Fp – the fraction of formed stars that have planets
Ne – the average number of planets per star that has planets
Fl – the fraction of those planets that have actually developed life
Fi – the fraction of planets with intelligent, civilized life
Fc – the fraction of these civilizations that have detectable communications
L – the length of over which these civilizations release detectable communications

For a little bit of honesty behind this equation; Frank Drake originally made this equation just to get people talking! He wanted to figure out a way of combining the work of SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) with mathematics and science. Drake come up with this theory after reading an article by Cocconi and Morrison which fueled his desire to communicate with other beings.

Drake used a 25 meter dish at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory to document his search for signals not created on earth. He named this research ‘Project Ozma.’ Dr. Drake planned on hosting a SETI meetings at the observatory and his preparation for this meeting he, somewhat unintentionally, developed this equation.

Now, let’s jump ahead to 2016! Adam Frank and Woodruff Sullivan, with the University of Rochester, announce their findings after ‘tweaking’ the Drake Equation. Most scientists, prior to Frank and Sullivan, used the Drake Equation in more a research and technology setting and, even then, could only give a scientific guess. Frank and Sullivan where more interested in figuring out how many advanced civilizations, more or less, have developed in the plan of the universe. The first thing this team did was removed the L (length over which these civilization release detectable communications). After that, they got a little fancy; the developed a form of the Drake Equation for Archaeology use. This equation is A = Nast * fbt. This equation takes a new form but is based off of Drakes work. A is the number of technological elements that have ever developed. Nast is the product of R, Fp and Ne of the Drake Equation. Fbt is the product of Fe, Fi and Fc of the Drake Equation.

What did Adam Frank and Woodruff Sullivan discover? Their analysis and research showed that there is less than 1 in 10 Billion Trillion chance that human civilization evolved on only Earth! Does this mean that there are other life forms out there? Does this mean we really are not alone? What is the next step in Science and the Unexplained?

UFO or Drone

Latest posts by Stephanie Kelly (see all)

It would appear, from reports, that many people are seeing more unexplained flying objects all around the world. One possibility that has been brought up often is that of Drones or other Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. Could this uptick in UFO sightings actually be related to the private and professional use of this type of equipment? Drones have become rather commonplace in many areas ranging from a novice who just likes the ability to record a family outing or gathering to them being used by the Military, Law Enforcement and Movie Studios. With Drones being a rather new piece of equipment, it is important to understand what a drone is, what they can do and what they may look like in the sky.
Drones, also referred to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), are basically flying robots. Most personally owned Drones are flown using a controller by a person on the ground. Commercially owned and Military controlled Drones are known to fly using GPS through software embedded in their systems, thus, no person is required to be within a certain range as it flies. Most normal citizens, in the United States, can’t fly their drone more than 400 feet above the ground by law but Drones have been recorded as high as 3,950 meters above sea level. It is possible for people to get clearance to fly their drone above 400 feet depending on location, weather, insurance and expertise. Most of the military and commercial use of Drones is classified as UAV flight or RPAS, remotely piloted aerial systems, flights. These RPAS and UAVs are made from much higher and longer flights, more than 60,000 feet high for extended time periods.
Now, let’s say you are peering up at the sky after the sun has set and see odd lights in the sky. Drones are also known to have multiple light patterns and colors available, most of which can be adjusted or altered at the flick of a switch or push of a button. The most common light set up for a drone would be 4 lights, typically white or blue, located on the bottom of the craft. Circular drones are known to have lights all the way around. RPAS can have lights that are white, blue, red or green and all them can be operated individually or shut off for surveillance purposes. Just because these shapes, patterns or colors are the norm doesn’t mean they can’t be altered or personalized, most can be completely redone at the owner’s desire.
The next time you see something in the sky, before jumping to the unexplained, try comparing them to known Drone images. You would be surprised at how many different types of UAV’s and different color patterns are available for purchase.

Pagan Celtic Celebration of Beltane

By: Christopher “Lobo” Ostrowski
Demonology Team Chair

Today is April 30*. Starting tonight at Sundown is the Pagan Celtic Celebration of Beltane. Imagine, centuries ago. The Fires of Bel would be light on the Mountain sides throughout the Celtic region of the World. The local tribes would pick a May Queen to symbolize the Goddess. She would choose a Male to represent the God that the Goddess gave birth to at the Winter Solstice. They would go off into to the woods to celebrate their Union.

Beltane’s fires also mark the bright half of the year. Since it lies in the northern hemisphere, we consider it spring. Actually it marks the start of summer whose middle point will be celebrated at “Midsummer” in June.

Other names for Beltane include: May Day, Cetsamhain, The ‘opposite Samhain’, Walpurgisnacht (in Germany), and Roodmas (the medieval Church’s name). This last came from Church Fathers who were hoping to shift the common people’s allegiance from the Maypole (Pagan lingam – symbol of life) to the Holy Rood (the Cross – Roman instrument of death)….

A good portion of ancient Celtic magic is sympathetic. This means that all actions were performed to simulate the desired result.

The Maypole is an important aspect of the Celebrations. It is the Symbol of the God. The Maypole dance was an important aspect of encouraging the return of fertility to the earth. As people passionately dance around and around the pole holding the brightly colored ribbons, the energy it raises is sent down into the earth’s womb, bringing about Her full awakening and fruitfulness
May was also the time to encourage crops, animals, and people to grow and reproduce abundantly. Unions among unmarried partners were a way to encourage this result, but it was considered unlucky to marry at this time of disorder
May is not the month to marry. May is the Goddess and God’s handfasting month, all honor would be Hers and His…

When the Romans invaded Western Europe and Britain, much of the symbolism and rites of the Floralia and Beltane became comingled. It became the holiday we now call May Day or Walpurgis. The custom of going ‘a-Maying’, which is collecting flowers, greenery and the maypole early on the morning of May 1, survives to this day. The lighting of Bel fires in Britain, Germany and other countries of Europe, also remains intact. The sexual aspect of the holiday, however sadly, has become almost extinct in many countries. The festivities became viewed as sinful by some Christian leaders, and in 1644 the celebration was banned by the Puritan-controlled Parliament in Britain….

Beltane, just like its counterpart Samhain, divides the year into its two primary seasons, Winter and Summer. As Samhain is about honoring Death, Beltane is about bringing forth Life. It is the time when the sun is fully released from his bondage of winter.
Beltane, also like Samhain, is a time of “No -Time”. “No-Time” is an in-between time, when the veils between the two worlds are at their thinnest. “No- Time” is when the two worlds can intermingle. It is when the strongest Magic can be performed. It is the time when the Faeries return from their winter respite.

On the night before Beltane, people would place rowan branches at their windows and doors for protection, many otherworldly occurrences could transpire during this time of “No-Time”.

* Although Beltane is now usually celebrated from sundown April 30th to sundown on the first of May, it should be noted that in earlier times, before the calendar changes of 1752, all dates year-round would have come some days later — precious extra days, in springtide especially, during which time the hawthorn (“mayflower”) and many more trees and flowers would have begun blooming.

Marbas

Marbas

Marbas is a Demon that is classified as a President of Hell. He commands 36 Legions, a Legion is 3,000-6,000 strong, of Demons. Is a Demon that is Patron to Craftsman and Healers alike. He teaches mechanics or the machine as well as the body. It is also said that He can show Man how to Shapeshift.

He is believed to have taught men to forge steel for weapons. This has brought comparisons to him and Tubal Cane of Biblical and Hephaestus/Vulcan of Greek and Roman myths.

He has taught men to Heal well as curse. Is brutally honest when asked if a person can be cured or not. This makes him compared to Apollo and The Archangel Michael.

In Marbas we see a Duality of Healing and Destruction. The Creation of Metalwork and Tradesman for Farming tools as well as weapons of War. The Ability to Heal and to Curse are common practices of the Shaman and Herbalists all over the world. “The difference between Medicine and Poison, is the dosage.”
Marbas (sometimes called Barbas) appears to the Practitioner as man with the head of a Lion. Peaks in powerful, yet pleasant voice. He will also alter his appearance if the Practitioner finds it too intimidating.
I think Marbas shows us just how Free Will comes into play. He is a giver of knowledge that can be used to Hurt or Heal. It is our choice on how we use this knowledge

Northern State Mental Hospital (also known as Northern State Hospital for the Insane and Northern State Hospital for the Criminally Insane)
Sedro-Woolley, Washington State
By: Lillee Allee

Northern State Mental Hospital, near Sedro-Woolley, was built in 1912 due to the overcrowding at the two asylums in the region. This cottage plan was designed so the institution could be be self-sufficient and to offer therapeutic work for the patients. The first homicide of one patient by another offered in February 1922.Throughout its history, the actual diagnoses were questionable as patients were placed in the hospital by well-meaning and perhaps not so well-meaning family members. Deaths occurred due to such reasons as excessive labor, electroshock therapy, and lobotomies. Though many felt that the name “the Bughouse” as it was locally known was a derogative term, Bugtown was actually the name of the area before the asylum was ever built. By the 1950s, the facility housed 2,700 residents, which was its full capacity. The hospital was closed in 1973. There were 1,500 unmarked burials in cemetery, and at its closing, 204 containers of cremated remains were found in the morgue. These were later buried in Mount Vernon at the Hawthorne Cemetery.

Part of the complex is used as a Job Corps office and a drug treatment center. Some of the building have been torn down or condemned so trespassing would be a dangerous as well as illegal behavior.

Hauntings reportedly include a little girl playing with a ball, a man who seems to follow her, and a nurse who is pushing a male patient in a wheelchair. In 2006, a paranormal group got permission to investigate and caught some compelling evidence on film.

Mano Cornuto (Horned Hand)

Hello Paranormal Seekers,
Mano Cornuto (Horned Hand)
By: Tamara Ortiz

Mano Cornuto, meaning horned hand in Italian. The horned hand is usually associated with the Wiccan traditions representing the Horned God or as the horns of the Moon Goddess. This symbol is used in the Occult as a charm or symbol to protect against the evil eye, similar to the hand of Hamsa (Arabic) and the hand of Hamesh (Hebrew). It is unclear in history if the Horned Hand symbol originated as an image of ‘horns’ or as a “poking out the evil eye” gesture. It is common belief in today’s day and age, although untrue that the Horned Hand is a representation of the devil or stands for some uncommon evil unseen force. This is so very untrue. It wasn’t until the late 70’s and early 80’s is when this symbol started to be utilized by heavy metal bands, furthermore associating the symbol with negativity and such things as the devil.

Even Salt can look like sugar, or sugar like salt but they taste completely different.

I bring up this analogy and this symbol today because the trends I have seen recently. When it comes to such things as the paranormal, please remember to do you due diligence in research, education and investigating.

Ouroboros

Hello Paranormal Seekers…
The Occult department would like to present to you the Ouroboros!
By: Tamara Ortiz

The Ouroboros is an ancient symbol usually depicted as a serpent or dragon. The symbol originated in Egypt as a representation for the sun although the name originates from within the Greek language “oura” meaning “tail” and “boros” meaning “eating”. Sometimes you will find the Ouroboros symbol represented at a lemniscate (figure eight). The Ouroboros can also have the symbolic representation of coming of full circle, the renewal of life and infinity and represents the cycle of life, rebirth and death. The Ouroboros can be found in many cultures such as the Aztec serpent God Quetzalcoatl and the Chinese alchemical dragons have both similar shapes and meanings. This is because of the serpent’s representation of rebirth by shedding its skin and starting a new. The Ouroboros can be represented very simple or a very intricate design. Mojo Bags and Amulets in the Occult

Hello Paranormal Seekers,

Mojo Bags and Amulets in the Occult
By Tamara Ortiz

Mojo bags and amulets are tools used and created often in Occult practices for a variety of purposes. They will be utilized by the practitioner or given to another person. They come in many different forms and containers depending on the practitioners need. The construction and rituals/rites associated with the mojo bag or amulet will vary widely based on the practitioner’s personal and religious viewpoints.

The origins of the mojo bag can be traced to the Congo regions of Africa (from the word moyo, meaning soul or life force.) The practices of the mojo bag migrated to the southern regions of the United States with African American slaves in the early 1600s. The mojo bag can be found in multiple cultures, occult practices and can have both a negative or positive influence depending on the purpose it was created. In the Haitian culture, mojo bags are believed to have the energy for which it was created for, whereas in Creole cultures the mojo bag is thought to be a symbol of black magic and will harm anyone it is given to or placed upon.
Although I have chosen to pin point the Mojo Bag in this discussion, the idea of adding annotated, blessed and or smudged items and herbs into a container stretches across many different practices and throughout history. A spell/charm bag, pray bag, conjure bag, trick bag, root bag, toby and gris-gris bag just to name a few are all forms of mojo bags in a way, just different perspectives.

Mojo bags are typically made with soft red woven fabric and a drawstring in origin but with color and material of the container playing a role in the symbolism of different, energies, deities, elements and things of this nature. They can be made of many different materials such as silk, leather, metal, wood and or glass, but remember the container is part of the spell more often than not. Items found within and used to create the mojo are stones, crystals, fossils, feathers, pieces of wood, nuts, shells, dried flowers or other herbs and seeds, just to name a few. The look and feel of the mojo will vary from practitioner to practitioner.
How to create Mojo or Charm/Spell bag:

I must reiterate that these are not a set in stone, list of rules. As you become more educated and diverse in the knowledge of the Occult as a practitioner, you will have the opportunity to explore, learn, consider, hypothesize and ultimately decide how you want to create your own.

1. It is created on the cardinal points, or on the point of a specific spirit depending on the need.
2. Color of the bag is important. Choose a color specific to the purpose for what it is being created for.
3. You can put as many items and you desire but remember your going to be channeling the energies of these items, so the more items, the harder it is believed to be to do so.
4. It must be filled with items that are specific to your need or the person it represents.
5. It must be annotated or blessed with a liquid of some kind.
6. Be very careful of the words you speak, words create energy that will become a part of the bag and or amulet.
7. Depending on purpose, you may need to smudge each ingredient or item that will be in the bag or amulet.
8. This step is optional depending on purpose. Use a magical alphabet or a magical symbol/seal drawn on a piece of paper and you will place or sew this into the bag. The type of parchment used can be important so keep this in mind.
9. Words of power and strength are spoken over the bag and or amulet activating the energy.
10. The final act is to breathe on the bag and or amulet to give it life.

My Mojo Bag…The pictures I have included are of a mojo/spell bag I have created for my own personal use. It was created for healing and protection purposes. I will describe the contents and symbolism found within.

The Bag – is blue silk to pull the energies of peace, tranquility and healing. The gold silk embroidery represents the God energy and the silver silk embroidery represents the Goddess energy. The Items inside – necklace with four archangel medallions (Michael for strength and protection, Raphael for healing, Gabriel for purification, and Uriel for peace.) One rose quartz crystal to push out negative energy. Herbs – valerian root, angelica, rose hips and flax seed for healing, protection and grounding. Blessed sea salt for cleansing, grounding, and protection. I used two magical symbols. The Sowilo “soe-we-low” for strength, healing and the suns energy and the Dagaz “theaw-gauze” for healing and the moons energy.

Tree of Life

Tree of Life

By: Tamara Ortiz

Hello Paranormal Seekers,

This post was inspired by a comment from a member on a previous post from the Occult department. She brought up the idea of and the symbol “The Tree of Life” being used in the Occult. Being such a complex symbol, I thought it wise to dive right in.

The Tree of Life is a universal symbol found in many spiritual belief systems including parts of the Occult. The tree of life represents wisdom, protection, strength, bounty, beauty and redemption throughout these beliefs systems. (Catalogs, 2016) I believe one of the factors that make this symbol so meaningful is because the tree is a very powerful symbol within its self. It is the one thing in nature that never stops growing even when it is dying it still continues to grow. In ancient Egypt the tree of life represented the hierarchical chain of events that brought balance between life and death. Buddhist believe that the tree of life is the very tree Buddha sat under while finding enlightenment. Chinese mythology represents the tree of life accompanied by a phoenix and a dragon, the dragon representing immortality and the phoenix representing rebirth. (Symbolic Dictionary , 2016) The most complex system of the tree of life is found in the Kabbalah, It embodies creation, existence and the return to the divine in ten spheres and twenty-two connecting paths. I find the tree of life and its representations across all platforms to be so beautiful and it is such a magical symbol. (Real Wiccan Spells, 2015)
I have decided to talk about this particular symbol because of a members interest but also I have been asked several times on previous post if symbols can be interchangeable, used across multiple platforms. I personally believe so and the tree of life is a perfect representation of this.

A symbol represents little more, and nothing less, than what the bearer chooses to have it represent but this is just my opinion.

What are some of your favorite symbols found within the Occult culture and there history?

What does this symbol mean to you?

Lilith

Lilith

By: Christopher Lobo Ostrowski

So many people have heard the story of Adam and Eve. But, few have learned of Adam’s first wife, Lilith.

In Genesis 2:18, it states that “God Said, ‘It is not good for man to be alone’” According to from Alphabet of Ben Sira (ca 700-1000 CE), “He then created a woman for Adam, from the earth, as He had created Adam himself, and called her Lilith.” There soon grew to fright. Lilith would not take a role or position of submission/subservience to Adam. Lilith believed that because they both were made of the Earth, they are then Equal. But Adam refused to see Her point. So, Lilith raging with anger, cried the “Ineffable (incapable of being expressed or described in word) Name of God” And flew off in the direction of the Red Sea. This left Adam miffed. He cried to “God” that Lilith had left. At once, “God”, sent these three angels to bring her back. She refused and was cursed to The Red Sea.

Some stories also state that Lilith is the mother of Cain, Making him Half Demonic. This making Eve the Mother of Abel. That is the reason “God” rejected his offering. Starting the SECOND biggest fight and first Murder.

Lilith and Samael /Asmodeus:

Yes, this is a two parter. It seems Lilith didn’t say alone long. The Archangel Samael, which later gets a name change to Asmodeus, for no reason, found her walking. Samael and Lilith mated and are to have produced legions of “Unclean Spirits”, (Demons). Some of these Demons were believed to be Incubus and Succubus. It is also believed that if a baby laughs in its near the Sabbath, Lilith is playing with it.
She is also the first of Samael’s four wives. Lilith, Igrath, Naamah and Mahalath, each of them the mother of her own brood of Demons.

During Medieval Times, and in some places today, Lilith and her Daughters are said to “lay with” young men as the sleep. This is said to help produce more Demons.

In The Treatise on the Left Emanation

Lilith and Samael were created at the same time that Adam and Eve were. They were intertwined as was Adam and Eve. They gave birth to Cain and all the Demons.
It is believed that it was Lilith, in the guise of a Serpent, that seduced Eve in the garden of Eden, to eat the Apple. A lot of the medieval iconography show The Serpent in a feminine form.

The Appearance of Lilith

There has been much speculation as to what Lilith looks like. The most come is said to be that of a woman with Red Hair, wings, and talons for feet. There are others that say She is a woman above the waist, a serpent below, red hair, and wings. There is also a report of Lilith being a woman, but with “Fire” below the waist.

Lilith in Modern times

Lilith has gain popularity again as a Strong Feminine Mother/Woman. Always referred to as “Mother” and possessing the Feministic stance. Demanding equality and freedom from the oppression of a Patriarchal system.
In Luciferianism, she is the Consort of Lucifer. Lilith, being the Bride of the Devil, is one part of the Adversary as being the dark instinctual side of man and woman, feminine, yet horrific and loving all within the same Being.

Dermot and Grania’s Bed

Dermot and Grania’s Bed, also known as Dunnamore, is a megalith located in Cookstown, County of Tyrone, Northern Ireland. This megalith appears to be made up of at least 6 slabs. All of these slabs range in height and width with the largest single stone being approximately 26 feet long.
This megalith was first documented, though briefly, by men of the names Westropp, Borlase and De Valera. In Westropp’s review of the site it appears that he believes it to be nothing more that a split rock. He appeared to be very set in his thinking that Dermot and Grania’s Bed was nothing more than a natural rock formation. Borlase appears to be unsure exactly what this stone formation is and only mentions its existence without giving a cause for it. De Valera and an associate take a difference stance. They stated that the site could be a “roughly built megalithic tomb” but also note that Westropp’s thought of it being a split rock was preferred.
Dunnamore is one of many megaliths that seem to still be a mystery. It does appears that this site has not had much excavation or research done to help determine its place in history. Many feel that this stone formations could date back to the Bronze Age though excavation and research have not been done to accurate date Dunnamore using today’s scientific testing.

The Ghosts of Carlisle Barracks

By: Christopher Rogue Ostrowski

Carlisle Barracks is located in the Cumberland Valley in Pennsylvania. It is considered one of the best military schools in the world.
Of its Graduates: John J. Pershing, Dwight D. Eisenhower and Omar N. Bradley are the top three recognized

Originally, a spot were early traders and settlers stopped to rest before they made their way across the Allegheny Mountains. It was made a Military post in 1757.
George Washington had visited the area during the Revolutionary War. He wanted it to the spot for the New Military Academy. But it lost out to West Point
The Post did serve as the U.S. Army Mounted Cavalry Training Area in the 1830’s
During the Civil War Union troops occupied both the post and the town of Carlisle. Major General J.E.B. Stuart a Confederate soldier demanded the post and the town surrender, when they didn’t he shelled both and set fire to the post.
In 1879, Carlisle Barracks became the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. Its most famous student and the best athlete was Jim Thorpe.
At the onset of World War l the Barracks was returned to the War Department. It became a hospital that specialized in the treatment of mental rehabilitation for those suffering from the newly identified trauma–called “Shell Shock”.
By the 1920s the Medical Field Service took over the Barracks.
In 1951, the U.S. Army War College relocated to Carlisle and to this day prepares senior officers for high command.
The Barracks assorted history has left the Barracks haunted by a plethora of ghosts. Some say Jim Thorpe can be seen in the Gym. Along with sounds of shuffling sneakers Many confounded Visitors hear faint 20’s and 30’s music from the Bandstand. When this music is heard it is often played off key so it felt that this was probably a young student band from the school preforming a concert.

At the Letort View Community Center, other ghosts can be seen including a well-dressed female student and a man dressed in farm attire. The cellar of this building is so active it has been dubbed, “Purgatory”.

Some of the ghostly activity reflects to the Revolutionary War. At Carlisle there is a building that was originally used as a powder magazine. Today this building is used as a museum that houses a variety of military artifacts.
It is believed that the Hessian soldiers who were forced to construct it in 1777 still haunt it.

Samael

By: Christopher Rogue Ostrowski

Samael is an Archangel that is a very complex Angelic character. His name means “the venom of God,” and is believed, by some to the “Satan” in the Bible. He is mentioned in the Talmud as accuser, seducer, and destroyer who slays humans with a single drop of poison.
Samael also is said to have planted the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil in the Garden of Eden This is where He also crosses paths with Lilith, the original Wife of Adam, according to the Jewish faith. He is said even to have possessed the serpent to tempt Eve. According to the Book of Enoch, which is not recognized by the Christian Faith, he taught humans Magic and was directly involved in the Angelic miscegenation that produced the Nephilim. Believed to be the race of ½ man and ½ angel that “God” tried to erase with the “Great Flood”.
Samael, like Azrael The Archangel of Death, has Twelve wings, and also holds full Archangelic status. Samael has the function of bringing Evil misfortunes and punishments upon Humankind, in God’s behalf. Yes, you read that right. There is a reason for misfortune. We can see, as it is stated in Isaiah 45:4-7, “God is the Source of all.” Even though this work depicted him as being one of the most wicked angels, he is nevertheless said to be an angel in the service of the Lord.

The Zohar* associates Lilith and Samael when speaking of the quaternion marriage. The quaternion marriage involved two couples; God and Shekina** above and Samael and Lilith below. But it is alleged that following the destruction of the temple that Shekina descended to be with her flock or people while her handmaiden Lilith ascended to become the consort of God, thus showing her importance.

Central Catholic High School

Central Catholic High School
By: Christopher Rogue Ostrowski
William H. Luden was the famous developer of the menthol cough drop and founder of the Luden’s company, which is also known for the original “5th Ave. Chocolate Bar”.
Luden launched a backroom candy business in 1879 in the rear of his father’s jewelry shop at 35 N. 5th St., Reading, Pennsylvania;
Luden built two mansions, one on 5th Street in Reading Pa., and one at1400 Hill Rd, Reading, PA. The latter called Bon-Air.
Luden sold the mansion to the Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia in 1939. It was turned into a Catholic High School. It welcomed its first students in 1940. An expansion the following year, roughly doubling its size, linked the mansion with its carriage house.
The doors may have closed on Central Catholic High School in 2011, the ghost stories that have spun out of the former Luden Mansion on Hill Road, may never stop operating.
The hauntings of the stately structure range from the natural deaths of Luden family members to a report of the suicide of one of William H. Luden’s sons.
Built over an old iron mine, the home he called Bon Air was a spectacular residence with a ballroom, bowling alley and a total of 33 rooms, including servants’ quarters on the third level. There were tunnels and nooks beneath the building.
Seated above what is now “City Park”, the mansion’s western side of the estate gave the Luden family a large view of the city.
And it is said that on that porch, one of William Luden’s sons hanged himself
The tales of death there have taken lives of their own. Stories of murders and mayhem have in numerous websites, in Urban Legends on the streets of Reading and in the stomping and shouting of upstart paranormal groups, which clumsily parade floor to floor.
Staffers have told stories of Temperature fluctuations, Papers being turned slowly on desks. “Things” that are walking around after hours. BUT, because of fear of repercussion, no one will allow a name or Title to be used. This hurts, of course, credibility

The Quaker church

The Quaker church

BY: Christopher Rogue Ostrowski

on Quaker Church Road in Perryopolis Pa., contains multiple different ghost stories. Now Quaker Church was founded by none other than a bunch of Quakers in the 1700’s. It was a sight where they killed supposed witches and where others practiced black magic later. The hellhound that haunts the church is just one legend.

Supposedly, past investigators have talk to people that have driven or walked past the church. One even stated that he hit a big black dog and it rolled up his hood and over his car. The dog got up and started chasing the car, It is stated that the Dog kept up with the car. But, once he cleared the church it had disappeared.

There are many more “Legends” about this once, a Quaker Church. One is that inside there is believed to a written description on the wall about how someone, a supposed witch was killed and if you read, that’s how you die. There is graffiti, quite a bit. It looks as if there “Satanists” and “Devil Worshipers” there at one time.***

Now there is an old tombstone that glows, supposedly There is a very creepy inscription on it,

A similar Inscription can be seen at The church of Sta. Maria Novella, in Florence. There is a fresco by Masaccio, “The Trinity” (ca. 1427). Below the fresco is a skeleton in the wall, with the epitaph, “io fu gia quel che voi siete e quel chio son voi anco sarete” (“I was once that which you are, and what I am you also will be”).
But this inscription is Americanized and says:
“Remember youth as you go by. As you are now so once was I. As I am now so you shall be. Prepare for death and follow me.”

The “legend” says if you sit on the tombstone when it’s glowing and read the inscription you and everyone you’re with will die. I don’t know if it’s true,

*** Probably just kids out for kicks. No respectable Satanist, Luciferian or “Devil Worshiper” would destroy a place like that

The Draugr

The Draugr

By: Christopher Rogue Ostrowski
Zombies seem to be the main attraction in so many movies and TV shows lately. I would be remiss to leave them out of my weekly article. Since my Ancestry is
Norse/Teutonic, I wanted to do their take on the Zombie or Draugr.
The Draugr are said to have pale flesh or skin as black as Hel, Hel being Norse Hel. She is the Goddess of the Helheim. She is said to have a face that half a beautiful woman and the other half of a Corpse.
Think the colors of a nasty bruise. The deep blues, plums, sickly greens and yellows. That would pretty much make up the every square inch of the Draugr’s body.

There are stories of Draugr being able to shapeshift. Horses, bulls, seals and cats are the common stories. Imagine going to bed with your new stray cat. It curls up on your chest, purring away. Then slowly gets heavier and heavier till it crushes you to death.

Draugr’s are said to be “as big as an Ox” Their swollen bodies are used to ram down doors. Smash through Halls. The all take part in an activity called “House Riding”. The climb to the top of a house, straddle it like a horse and drum their heels on the sides of the roof. Terrifying those below, while they are destroying the rafters.

While our Western image of the zombie draws more from the Caribbean influence of voodoo, it’s good to keep in mind the other traditions that have dealt with the undead. Norse mythology certainly has some great twists on the myths.

Honey Island Swamp Monster – Louisiana

Honey Island Swamp Monster – Louisiana
By Jessica Stacey-Miller

The Honey Island Swamp monster, also known as the Louisiana Wookie, is a fascinating humanoid cryptid believed to have been seen lurking in the swamp since 1963. Honey Island Swamp is one of the most uncorrupted swamp lands in the U.S.A. covering over 70,000 acres of protected wildlife land. The swamp is inhabited by many animals including alligators, wild boars, snakes, black bears and bald eagles.

The first reported sighting was by Harlan Ford, a retired Air Traffic Controller who had a passion for wildlife photography. The monster gained notoriety in 1974 when Harlan and his friend Billy Mills reported to have found odd footprints as well as several bodies of boars with their throats slashed open. Harlan was able to get a plaster cast of the footprint showing webbed toes. The Louisiana Wildlife Commission and zoologist at the Louisiana State University were called out to examine the footprint and it was determined not to be a hoax. They estimated the weight of the creature to be around 400 pounds and an animal of unknown origin. Harlan kept searching for the monster for several years and after Harlan’s death in 1980, a film reel was found with footage of the monster. Though the video is not clear, you can still find a clip of the film online. Another man, Ted Williams, claimed to also have sighted the creature. When asked why he didn’t kill the creature, his response was that he didn’t feel threatened and didn’t believe it wanted to hurt him. Ted took his boat out one day to set trout lines and was never heard from again.

According to legend, the creature is reported as having two rear limbs, roughly 7 feet tall with matted grey hair and yellow or red reptilian eyes. Locals in the area have theorized that the creature is to blame for many livestock deaths as well as cases of missing adults and children. An interesting legend is that of a train wreck in nearby Pearl River in the early twentieth century. According to legend a train full of exotic animals from a traveling circus crashed and the animals fled into the swamp. Supposedly the chimpanzee’s mated with the alligators and the Honey Island Swamp monster is the product of their union. However, this is impossible as monkeys and alligators cannot interbreed.
The creature was featured in many television shows including Lost Tapes, In search of…, Fact or faked: Paranormal files, Swamp people, and Monsters and mysteries in America. There is a real plaster cast footprint of the Honey Island Swamp monster on display at Abita Mystery House. The plaster cast was donated by Dana Holyfield, the grand-daughter of Harland Ford.

Vietnam Rock Apes

Sara Fawley

Vietnam’s Rock Ape
By Sara Fawley
With the coming of the War in the 1960’s and 1970’s and the influx of American Soldiers into the jungles of Vietnam tales begin to emerge of encounters with strange ape like creatures that came to be known as “Rock Apes”. The creatures are said to be 5 to 6 feet tall, covered mostly in reddish brown fur except for certain areas such as the face, knees, palms of hands and bottoms of feet. They are bipeda with no tail, travel either alone or in small groups. The natives referred to them as Nguoi Rung or “jungle people” and had long known of them. To the locals they were just a fact of life and part of living in the interior jungles.
In fact tales of the same or very similar creatures have long been around the area. Not only Vietnam but Laos, Camnodia and Northern Borneo as well. The creatures have other names besides Nguoi Rung and Rock Ape as it was dubbed during the war. They are also known to locals as Batutut and Ujit. They are all similar in appearance though the ones in Borneo are said to have grayish hair and an aggressive nature with a tendency to attack humans with no provocation.
Although they were well known to the locals these humanoid, hairy bipeds were something new and frightening to the soldiers. While patroling the jungles, fighting off the Viet Cong as well as mosquitoes and other jungle life, stories of encounters with these “Rock Apes” began to become common place.
There are numerous tales ,one of the most well known is told by Veteran Kregg P.J. Jorgenson in his book Very Crazy G.I,.- Strange But True Stories Of The Vietname War. In his book, Jorgenson relates the encounter had by a 6 man unit of the 101 Airborne Division while they were on patrol in the mountainous jungle terrain of Vietnam. It was an arduuos hike carrying heavy packs through an unforgiving environment so the group stopped to take a rest. Although they were exhausted and resting they were still alert and attuned to their surroundings since they were aware that the enemy was everywhere. As they sat there some trees about 15 yards uphill began to violently shake. Assuming it was the enemey the men readied their weapons and sat waiting, watching the trees. But what emerged from the underbrush was not the Viet Cong as they feared. What they saw was a strange creature covered in matted reddish hair. The creature had a muscular frame with an oblong head, large mouth, deep set eyes and stood about 5 feet tall on two legs . The creature seemed to stand just observing them. The soldiers started speculating as to what it was, at first assuming it was an orangatuan until one of them pointed out that orangutans are not native to Vietnam. As they sat arguing, trying to assimilate what they were seeing the creature apparently became bored and slipped back off into the jungle.
There are other tales , many of much more violent than Jorenson’s account. Several of these involve a strategic position known as Hill 868 in the Quang Nam province. Alllegedly this particular site was so overrun with the “Rock Apes” that it became known among soldiers as “Monkey Mountain”. One of the encounters is related by Veteran Steve Canyon. According to Canyon a unit of Marines was out in the jungle of Hill 868 at night testing out a new muzzle flash and noise suppresser for their weapons. As they were getting set up to begin testing they noticed a Rock Ape staring aggresively at them from the nearby vegetation. After sitting there glaring at them for several moments the creature let out a loud barking sound. One of the soldiers threw a rock at it to scare it off. He hit it dead on with the rock, at this point the Rock Ape picked up it’s own rock and hurled it back at the soldiers. The group then noticed that while they were watching the single creature several more , about 20, had gathered around them in the jungle. The creatures began letting out howls and screeches and throwing rocks at the soldiers. The unit made a hasty retreat out of the jungle and back to the hill without engaging the creatures. When asked why they did not fire at the creatures, Canyon stated that “it just didn’t seem right to fire at them with their weapons”.
Now when reading these accounts you may think these were young men taken from their homes and families to fight an unknown enemy in a strange country and environment nHe ew to them so of course theses accounts were probably encounters with misidentified know species native to the area. These would be reasonable assumptions if not for the fact that encounters were not only had by the Americans but there are also tales from the other side of the lines as well. So much so in fact that in 1974 the North Vietnamese party Secretariat ordered a scientific expedition to find definitive proof of these Rock Apes. Professor Vo Quy of the Vietnam National University headed the expedition. They did not see any of the creatures but did find some curious tracks in the deep jungle. Casts were made of the footprints and sent to be analyzed. The analysis found that the print was wider than a human but much to large to be that of an Ape. There were other expeditions including one led by North Vietnamese General Hoang Minh Thau which were also unsuccessful.
Adding weight to the possibility that these tales are more than just campfire stories coming from the overstressed minds of young men fighting for their lives in unfamiliar surroundings are the claims of noted zoologist Dr. John McKinnon. In 1970, Mckinnon claimed to have found tracks of the creature which locals told him came from what they called Batutut. Mckinnon believed that the tracks he found were of hominid origin, possibly similar to the Maganthropus. The tracks were said to have human looking toes but about the size of an Asiatic black bear which are not native to Vietnam. Mckinnon wrote of the findings in a 1978 book, In Search Of The Red Ape. Although he never found solid evidence of the existense of Batutut , Mckinnon did discover several new species of large mammals in the Vu Quang Mountain rainforest in 1992, proving that the region was indeed capabale of hiding and sustaining large unknown species .
So do the Rock Apes exisit and if so, what are they? There are several theories that have been proposed over time. One theory being that the tails are a misidentification of a known species, the Tonkin snub-nosed Monkey. On the surface the snub-nosed monkey sounds like a good candidate. They live in mountainous areas in groups of up to 600. Show little fear of humans and have a wide range of vocalizations including one that sounds remarkably like a bark. Unfortunately this is where the similarities end. The snub-nosed monkey is active in the daytime, is exclusively tree dwelling, has a long prominent tail, is not bipedal and is nowhere near the 4-5 foot stature of the Rock Ape. Rock Apes conversely are bipedal, ground-dwelling, tailess nocturanl creatures.
Another theory is that the American soldiers were well known for imbibing in illict drugs including hallucenogentics and these encounters were just the product of over stressed drug-hazed minds in a stressful situation. There are a few problems with this theory. One being that stories of Batutut, Ujit or Nguoi Rung were known among the natives well before the war and American Soldiers. Also the fact that stories come from both sides of the conflict. Add in the fact that while the may have been some recreational drug use among the soldiers it is highly doubtful that this was happening during combat situations and there are numerous stories or Rock Ape encounters during combat. To believe this theory one would also have to believe that both sides of the conflict spent the entire war in a drug induced haze.
The most logical theory to my mind is that there is some as yet undiscovered species of ape hidden deep in the mountainous jungles of Vietnam. The fact that numerous new species of mammals have been discovered in this area in recent years just solidfies this theory to me. As always, do the research and reading and you decide. For me I will not be surprised if and when a new primate is discovered in the jungles of Vietnam.

The Rehmeyer House

The Rehmeyer House

By: Christopher Rogue Ostrowski

In a Place now known as Spring Valley Park, stands the Rehmeyer House. This place was once Rehmeyer’s Hollow, named after the owner of the House, Nelson Rehmeyer.

Nelson Rehmeyer was what called, in this area, a Pow Wow Doctor. This hits a chord with me because I too practice this type of Folk Medicine.

On Nov. 27th, 1928, Nelson was murdered by a gentleman and three accomplices. John Blymire believed that Nelson Rehmeyer, believed to be a witch, cursed or hexed him. He consulted Nellie Noll, known as the Marietta River Witch. Noll told him that 2 things needed to be down to break the Hex:
1. Steal Rehmeyer’s spell book “The Long Lost Friend” and burn it.
This is a book written in 1820 by John George Hoffman. A type of “Spell book” for this PA German Shamanic Folk Medicine
2. Cut a lock of Rehmeyer’s hair and bury it 6-feet in the ground.

Blymire and his two accomplices broke into Rehmeyer’s home. There was a fight. They brutally beat Nelson and strangled him. The home was set ablaze to cover their tracks.

Somehow, the flames extinguished themselves. The police found enough evidence from the body and scene to charge all three men with Murder of Nelson Rehmeyer.
This became known as the “York Hex Slayings”

Since the Murder, there have been reports of Black dogs with red eyes on the grounds and in the woods. “Smoke” is seen coming from the home. Even “UFO sightings have been reported.

The grounds are said to be “Bad Grounds” by local Native Americans.

Soucouyant

By: Christopher Rogue Ostrowski

Soucouyant

The Soucouyant has its origins in The Caribbean. It is believed to be a Vampire Witch.

A Witch is said to have made a deal or “Pact” with a Demon named Bazil that lived in a Silk Cotton tree. The witch will start to bring blood of the victims for the demon in exchange for Evil Magic Powers.
Upon the Witch’s death, the Witch will then become a Soucouyant.

The Soucouyant is Shape Shifter. During the day it will appear as an old woman, very reclusive. When night falls, She will remove her skin and place it a mortar. In her true form, she appears as a fire ball the streaks across the sky looking for victims. Once a victim is found, the Soucouyant can squeeze through any crack, keyhole or crevice.

The Soucouyant sucks blood from soft parts, arms, and legs of the victims. This leaves a Blackish-blue mark in the morning. If it drains too much blood, the victim will die and become a Socouyant itself or die completely. Then the Soucouyant can use its victim’s skin.

To expose a Soucouyant, one can place a heap of rice at crossroad. The Soucouyant will feel compelled to count every grain of it. It is said to pile the rice high. If the Soucouyant can’t get back into her skin by sunrise, she will die. Also, if you can find her skin and throw salt on it, she can’t put it back on.

To protect your home, place salt at the door and an upside down broom.

Spirit Guides

Spirit Guides

By: Christopher Rogue Ostrowski

I want to take a moment and talk about something that is common in all cultural Belief Systems, “Spirit Guides.” Whether we are talking about Norse, Celt, African, Native American, or Judeo-Christian, they have a form. Angels, Ancestors, Lwa, etc.. They are basically the same. They are an intermediary between the Corporal World and the Divine. They consul, guide and protect us. It is believed that some Spirit Guides are Humans that have learned and became enlightened. They now are advancing in their Spirits progression. They are now in a position to help others advance.
Now, “why is this on a Paranormal Page like NPS?” Well, it’s simple. Being that we are not as connected with our ancestral roots and teaches and the influence of various Religions, what really is that shadow in the corner? We have been taught “that monsters hide in the dark,” “anything that is unexplained must be feared,” “if it goes against or customs, it is evil.”
How do we really know that all the stories are true? We have no “Scientific Proof.” Although, we do, sometimes try to fight off on unproven entity with another unproven entity. If we are going to believe that there are “Bad” ones that are based on a Faith, we need to admit there are “Good” based on a faith. We are so quick to throw Holy Water, Sage and Prayers at something that we don’t understand. If it is a Spirit, why is it here? Is it really malevolent or are we letting paranoia affect us? Maybe it is a Spirit Guide. Spirt guides can come in all forms. The fox along the road that you drove past, might have interest in your wellbeing. The “Shadow Person” in the corner, might be an ancestor trying to warn you about something in your life. The Poltergeist might need to stop you from staying in that house because the pipes are bad.
Science and Beliefs can work together. The more you study, the more you know about both.

Alma – Wild Man of Central Asia

Ashley Ann Lewis

Ashley Ann Lewis

Director / Dept Chair Occult at National Paranormal Society
Ashley became interested in the paranormal at a young age, but at that young age she did not have much understanding in it at all. I wasn’t until 2010 that she really became interested. Thanks to a Resolve carpet cleaning can that flew across the room, Ashley among three others who witness what happen that night, they pulled a team together. Ashley is a heavy researcher and though she may find the answer to what she is searching for she’ll search even harder. She’s overly determined and takes her part in the paranormal field very seriously. Between working hard and spending every dime she had she became a found of a paranormal team that is based out of Historic Louisiana and was honored to take on a position as a Representative with The National Paranormal Society. There is still so much she does not understand which drives her to work even harder and to further educate herself on everything.

So we have the Yeti, Bigfoot and then there’s the Alma. Is it the same creature? Or are there different types, breeds, of these creatures. People have different sayings, experiences and even pictures of these creatures but in each place there’s a different story.
The “Wild Man” of Central Asia
In central Asia, in what, until a few years ago was the Soviet Union, there are stories of a large, ape-like creature that inhabits the mountains. It goes by the name of the Alma.
Unlike the better known Bigfoot and Yeti, reports about the Alma say that the creature is much more of a rough, hairy human than an ape. Professor Boris Porchnev, of the Moscow Academy of Sciences, published a description of the creature based on detailed stories he’d gathered from people who had seen it.
“There is no underlayer of hair so that the skin can sometimes be seen,” says the report. “The head rises to a cone-shaped peak,” it continues, and “the teeth are like a man’s, but larger, with the canines more widely separated.” Porchnev’s description also noted that the Alma can run as fast as a horse and swim in swift currents. Breeding pairs remain together living in holes in the ground. For food they eat small animals and vegetables. The creatures are mainly active at night. The report also noted that the animals have a “distasteful smell.”
The first stories of the Alma were gathered in 1881 by N. M. Pzewalski, a traveler in Mongolia who also discovered the Mongolian wild horse. During the Second World War refugees, soldiers, and prisoners of war, often reported seeing the Alma. Slavomir Rawicz, in his book The Long Walk, the story of his escape from a Siberian labor camp, tells of being delayed by a pair of Almas. Chinese soldiers reportedly put food out for the Alma and watched it eat.
M.A. Stonin, a geologist, was prospecting near Tien Shan in 1948. One morning he awoke to cries by his guides that the horses were being stolen. Stonin grabbed his rifle and headed outside to find a figure standing by the horses. It had long red-hair all over it’s body. The creature moved off at Stonin’s shouts and he chased after it. The animal was so man-like, though, that Stonin couldn’t bring himself to shoot it and the thing escaped.
In 1957 a hydrologist named Alexander G. Pronin, on an expedition to study water resources, reported seeing “a being of unusual aspect.” It stood at a distance in the snow with it’s legs wide apart and with arms longer than a normal man’s. Pronin watched it for five minutes, then the creature disappeared behind a rock. Three days later he saw the figure again briefly. Then a week later one of the group’s inflatable boats disappeared without explanation and was later found upstream. Pronin found out that the locals often blamed the “wild man” with stealing household items and taking them into the mountains. This made Pronin wonder if the Alma was responsible for the missing boat.
Alma’s have reportedly been shot and killed, but the carcasses have never been examined by scientists. In 1937, during a clash with the Japanese, a Russian reconnaissance unit in Mongolia spotted two silhouettes coming down a hill toward them. When the figures did not respond to a challenge, sentries shot them. Then next morning the recon unit was surprised when they examined the bodies. They were of a “strange anthropoid ape” that was about the size of a man and covered with long red hair. Unfortunately, because of the war, the bodies could not be returned to Moscow for a proper evaluation.

The purpose of this demonstration is to show how you can get streaking in your photos, even if you are using your flash. You do not need a long exposure to have this happen.

The photos provided are a couple of shots I took with my iPhone 5s. I have included screen shots of the EXIF data from both photos. Notice how the exposure time is the same for both photos.

With the first photo, I held the phone as still as possible. In the photo with the streaks, I moved the phone slightly as I took the photo. It takes only a very light movement to cause streaking from any light sources in the distance.

If you are walking around outside at night snapping photos here and there, it is very easy to unintentionally have your camera in movement as you take a photo.

Cadborosaurus

Cadborosaurus

By: Jessica Stacey-Miller

There is a long history of Cadborosaurus, affectionately nick named Caddy, a sea serpent creature well known in British Columbia, Canada. Caddy was first seen off the coast of Victoria Island and described as having a long neck with a camel or horse-like head, a pair of front flippers and a large fan-like tail. Some accounts have the description of hind flippers rather than a tail. There have been over 300 reported sightings in the past 200 years. The earliest reports of Caddy were in the aboriginal tribes of British Columbia, as well as Alaska. The sea creature is also known as “Hiytil’iik” by the Manhousat tribe, “T’chain-ko” in Sechelt mythology, and “Numske lee Kwala” by the Comox tribe. The Inuit tribes often painted the creature on the sides of their canoes to ward the creature off.

Stories have existed since the 1800’s but the first sighting reported was in 1933 by a Victoria resident and his wife while out on their yaht. They described their encounter as seeing a “horrible serpent with the head of a camel.” Another report came soon after in 1934. This time it was the government who reported seeing the creature and the exact same description was given. Some local fisherman that same year also reported seeing two serpents in the water. One was over 60 feet long and the other was half the size at about 30 feet long. Some hunters claimed to have seen Caddy rise out of the water, swallow the duck they just wounded and then submerge back under water. One of the most notable reports came in 1937 when a whaling station in Vancouver believed to have finally caught Caddy. Inside the stomach of a sperm whale was a carcass 20 feet in length, with the head of a horse, a snake-like body and a spiny tail. They were able to capture a picture but the remains of the serpent somehow mysteriously disappeared. Another picture was taken in 1939 by Captain Paul Sowerby. More accounts came about several years later in 1953 when 10 people saw Caddy from various vantage points and every description was the same. A video was also released in 2009 and a short clip of the video was featured on the Discovery TV show Hilstranded. The clip can also be found on youtube.

There are various theories of what this sea creature could be. Most of those theories do not fit the description at all. Some of those theories include basking sharks, sea lions, and pipefish. Two possible explanations could be that of a giant oarfish which are known to reach up to 65 feet in length. Another possible explanation is a Zeuglodon, which is an ancient whale thought to be extinct. Edward Bousfield, a retired marine biologist has made huge efforts in the attempt to find and prove the existence of Caddy. Mr. Bousfield and his partner Paul Leblond, chairman and founder of BCSCC, Canada’s cryptozoology organization have been pushing to formally introduce Caddy as a new species, Cadborosaurus willsi. They have also called upon the scientific community to help find Caddy. So if you ever find yourself in Victoria, keep your eyes on the water. Perhaps you will spot Caddy!

5 Barriers to a good EVP Recording

5 Barriers to a good EVP Recording

by Pam Williams

First of all, what is an EVP?
An EVP, or Electronic Voice Phenomenon, is described as an intelligible voice, found on any recording media, which has no physical explanation. Many voices are thought to be from a deceased person, or sometimes many people. This is the primary reason that once one was found, people began to experiment with recordings, trying to repeat the circumstance where voices were supposedly heard.

What types of recordings are there?
Some, but not all, types of recording devices are: Radio frequency devices (ghost box or spirit box), hand held recorders, digital voice recorders, cell phone apps. (such as EVP maker), and computer programs with built in mic..
There is also a new one-Environmentally stimulated speech synthesis-but it is a relatively new technique, and it should be noted that all speech synthesis approaches currently being tried do not support speaker recognition.

OK, so now I have my recording….what barriers will I find?
EVP’s are one of the most controversial subjects in the history of ghost hunting.

1) While listening, you may become frustrated. Some may come in as a whisper, some sounding like another language. One person may hear one thing said, while someone else hears something totally different.

2) Background noises may distort what and how you hear something. It could be a car driving by, people outside, water dripping, an owl hooting or dog barking, or bugs or rodents moving about.

3) EVP’s may be distorted by cheap or poor quality hearing devices. Static from electric or telephone wires, or other electronic devices, can disturb the sounds you hear. If you have a poor device, it can make it hard to understand the voices, or noises you hear.

4) You, yourself, or people with you can cause hearing issues. They may step while you are recording, talk to someone in a whisper, run into objects in the dark, or breathe close to you, causing inaccurate EVP’s. If you have others with you, or even if you are alone, always document your movements, breathing, if you or someone runs into, or moves objects, or is talking. This will allow you to keep a record of “false positives”.

5) When you have done your recording, always try to listen back on headphones that cover your ears (earmuff style), and in a quiet spot. This blocks out background noise, and allows you to hear if anything was caught. ALWAYS get a second opinion, and if you question something, take it to someone with extensive audio experience to listen as well, to verify or debunk what you think you heard.

Be sure to set up a method of saving your recordings in you computer that will allow you to easily relocate them. A good practice is to date the recordings, with time and date, and where they occurred.

Walter Russell
By Stephanie Kelly

Walter Russell, 1871-1963, was a man of many talents. He has been called a painter, sculptor, musician, and natural philosopher to list a few. He is also considered to be part of the New Thought Movement that started in the 1800’s and was based on combining spirituality and science. Some of the main focuses in the New Thought Movement were hypnotism, mental and spiritual healing along with health care that focused on illness being more mental than physical. To explain it simpler, the New Thought Movement focuses on being one with the world as a whole and less on the man made.
What was Mr. Russell’s role in the New Thought Movement? Walter Russell believed that humans evolved in stages, not only physically but also mentally. He was among the few that believed that the human brain had made leaps in its focus and process such as going from animal awareness as a primary focus to rational awareness. Russell accepted the thought of Richard Bucke that the next big leap in humans was going to be from rational awareness to spiritual consciousness. In an article for Message of the Divine Iliad, Russell stated “This New Age is marking the dawn of a new world-thought. That new thought is a new cosmic concept of the value of man to man. The whole world is discovering that all mankind is one and that the unity of man is real – not just an abstract idea. Mankind is beginning to discover that the hurt of any man hurts every man, and, conversely, the uplift of any man uplifts every man.” Mr. Russell also leased a building known as Swannanoa Mansion for the University of Science and Philosophy. This school was started by Mr. Russell and his wife with the motto “Our purpose is to help unfold the spiritual nature of man in order that the human race will find happiness and peace through knowledge and practice of the Love Principle of Giving and Regiving which Nature alone practices and man defies.” This organization still has a following today though it is no longer recognized as a teaching University and focuses on providing information for people to study independently.
With some research into Mr. Russell and his thoughts on the New Age and New Thought Movement, here is what I have gathered from his writings and biography:
Mr. Russell believed that our brain originally focused on processing its surroundings; animals, plants, weather, etc. This would of been done in a primal survival type of thought process. An example of this today is how an animal can hide an illness or injury so that predators won’t be able to easily spot its weakness. As we, as humans, developed socially and intellectually our thought process also developed. With social and physical stability we were able to develop a mental aware of ourselves more than our surroundings. This in turn caused us to become more aware of our health and injuries and allowed us to begin to show our weaknesses. This also would of caused our brains to develop a compassion and protective concern for others. My interruption of Walter Russell’s believe is that the next stage of mental evolution is that humans will become more aware of the unexplained and spiritual aspect of the world. We will also be able to control our Though he never truly states what our brains with start to process or how they will affect our lives, it does bring up a good conversation and focus of study.
Walter Russell was a very well educated man and he believed that one day spirituality and science will be able to work together under a common goal. Does this mean that he thought basic scientific methods could be used in proving spiritual and unexplained occurrences? It is hard to say if his theory of combining these two has developed or progressed since his death, it is also hard to say if his theory is valid.

CIA Files Continued
Belgian Congo – August 1952
By Stephanie Kelly

On August 16, 1952, the CIA distributed a set of papers from March 1952. This small stack of papers were all concerning information about a reported unexplained flying object seen in the Congo. These objects were best described as two fiery disks that were located in the southern part of the district along or just east of, the Laupula River. It was said that the disks glided in air with “elegant curves and changed their position many times.” Some also said that they had a penetrating hiss and buzz that could be heard by people on the ground for the 10 to 12 minutes they were in view.
A man only referred to as Commander Pierre with the Elisabethville airfield, immediately went after these two disks that were seen. Commander Pierre was able to give a detailed description of the UFO’s that could make any skeptic question their view! According to the report by Pierre the saucer was 12 to 15 meters in diameter (39 to 49 feet) and was the shape of a disk, it was able to shift elevation of 200 or more meters (approximately 650 feet) in just a few seconds. He also said that it would suddenly shot down to just above the treetops which he estimated at 20 meters, or 65 feet, from the top of the trees as he kept it in sight. Another interesting thing to add is that, Commander Pierre did not think that these crafts could have had any person on them. His view was that the erratic and irregular speed would of created such heat that the it would have been “impossible for a person to stay inside the stable core.” He also evaluated the speed of the aircraft, at the time he stopped pursuing it, as 1,500 kilometers per hour, or about 930 miles per hours.
As a researcher, I can understand why the CIA would want to question this sighting and evaluate the claims. That part of the Congo was the home to Shinkolobwe. For those that don’t know, Shinkolobwe is a very protected mine located in the Congolese that was used by the United States for the mining of uranium for use in the Manhattan Project.
Why did the CIA feel that this information need to be provided to the State Department, Army, Navy, Air force, National Security Resources Board and FBI? Remember, this is obviously a UFO and no explanation appears to be readily available for it like many others sightings in this time frame. Don’t most Governments firmly deny the existence of UFO’s, if so, why did this one get so much attention. In the 1950’s no country had the ability the make an aircraft that fits the above description with the ability to maneuver in the flight patterns described. With that said, I am pretty doubtful that any country would have the ability as of today. Something got the attention of the American’s and the German’s but what was it and why?

I am a supervisor for several programs assisting individuals with intellectual and mental challenges. I have 2 Masters Degrees from Penn State in Communication Disorders and Psychology. My first experiences with the paranormal were around age 5. I’ve been fascinated ever since. I have been an investigator for over 10 years (first 5 years with a team, then leaving to form my own more than 5 years ago, and have taught classes on investigation, evidence analysis (especially EVP) and debunking at local community college. I also have abilities, some of which began at age 5 and others around puberty. Therefore my fields of major interest are investigation and psychic and empath. While I am open to considering all aspect and viewpoints, I am dedicated to seeking natural explanations first before anything is considered evidence.

THE OCCULT BELIEFS OF THE KNIGHTS TEMPLAR

By: Lisa Shaner-Hilty

The Knights Templar, have been an order of legendary status, living on in infamy to nearly the same extent. While scholars in great number have studied this group of elite warriors and financiers, it is unclear to this day what is fact and what is mere speculation. Were they a dedicated defenders of Christianity, or did they practice in the Occult…or both? Let’s explore…

It is known that The Templars were formed approximately 20 years after the First Crusade and the fall of Jerusalem into Christian control in 1099 (“Dark History of the Knights Templar”). The Knights used the Temple of Solomon as their stronghold, hence the name Knights Templar. One segment of the Knights were elite soldiers entrusted with defending and expanding the Christian faith; others were skilled financiers and architects/craftsman.

The Templars reportedly excavated the Temple of Solomon, securing secret treasures until it was again lost to the Muslims some 70 years later (ibid). In 1128, Pope Honorius II afforded the Templars great authority, answerable to the Pope alone (“Order of the Knights Templar”). True to the adage “power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely” (John Acton), the Templars amassed treasure from not only the Temple of Solomon, but also from usury, and looting those brutally defeated in battle. They became a force to be reckoned with throughout Europe, and as far as Africa. Their mission seemingly shifted to amassing wealth and power. Castles, churches and other strongholds were built throughout the vast area covered by the Templars, where treasure was hidden with deeply encoded clues re location to keep outsiders from finding it.

ALLEGATIONS OF OCCULT PRACTICES: The Templars returned to Europe in 1290 to rumors of their having turned away from their Christian vows and embracing the occult, even devil worship. It is unclear whether these rumors were true, or whether they were falsified by rulers and clergy who were heavily indebted to, and envious of, the Templars. The extreme secrecy of all Templar locations, rituals, etc. added fuel to the firestorm of rumors. After all, if they were carrying out their assigned mission for God’s glory, what did they need to hide?

According to multiple sources, occupying the same area in Jerusalem as the Cabala, adopted their practices. Cabala, which pre-dates the Torah, “mystic synthesis of pagan teachings prior to Torah and Judaism, associated with sorcery. For thousands of years, the Cabala has been a resource for sorcery and black magic… The Templars engaged in research into the Cabala with the goal of acquiring supernatural powers.” (“Dark History of the Knights Templar”). Those who believe in magic attribute their whole success to magical artifacts acquired via Solomon, and say that the Templars’ astonishingly rapid rise to power was due to either genuine black magic, use of Godly powers, or both. (djps).

Reportedly a former Templar (though Templars took oaths for life) had made claims against the order for denouncing their faith, engaging in activities forbidden by the church, occult practices, and Satan worship. During the Knights’ extremely secretive initiation rites, initiates were required to deny Christ three times, spit or urinate on, or trample a crucifix, (Encyclopaedia Britannica, “Dark History of the Knights Templar”, dpjs). There is no definitive proof of devil-worship; however, with demon images built into and within churches and other Templar buildings, many accept that they were Devil worshippers. Templars studied Cabala Arab occultism, many forms of magic, and other occult practices. (djps, Dan Brown)
The Templars were reportedly worshippers of Baphomet, referred to by some as a devil, others a demon, others an idol. Underwood describes Baphomet as “a demon with the head of a goat, whose image was later to become the symbol of The Church of Satan.” Eliphas Levi, an occultist and practice of Cabal, depicted “Baphomet as having a goat’s head with two faces, and a winged human body that is female above the waist and whose lower half is male.” Other sources listed below provide similar descriptions. During the interrogations which followed the dissolution of and unsuccessful attempt to eradicate the order by Philip IV of France, many Templars confessed to these claims, and practices including worshipping idols of cats, a bearded head on a stick, and being invested with occult powers during secret black masses and other rituals (djps).

While many Templars were captured, tortured and confessed, most recanted their confessions, only to be burned. Others escaped and are widely regarded as having fled to what is now Switzerland and to Scotland, where to this day, Templar symbolism is evident. One common belief is that the Templars exist even to today in the form of Freemasons and the Illuminati. (“Dark History of the Knights Templar”, djps). Scholars to this day strive to prove or disprove the alleged practices of the Knights Templar by attempting to follow the maze of codes and symbols. For now, their legend continues and the majority of their secrets remain hidden…

Citrine Stones

Citrine Stones

By: Sherry Perkins
Citrine is a yellow-to-golden member of the quartz mineral group. A deep golden variety from Madiera Spain can resemble the costly imperial topaz gem stone, which is one reason that citrine is a popular birthstone alternative to those born in November.
” It is said to promote and manifest success and abundance in all areas, and in many ways. It is particularly used to promote success in business if used in the cash box of a shop, carried or worn, earning it another nickname, “Merchant’s Stone.” In addition to manifesting abundance, citrine also brings energies of generosity so that the prosperity and success is shared.
Citrine has been called the “stone of the mind”. Ancient cultures believed that placing a citrine on the forehead of an elder would increase his psychic power.
Citrine is a solar plexus chakra stone used metaphysically to increase, magnify and clarify personal power and energy. This increased personal power can be used for the focused intent of the individual, as it brings will power as well.
Citrine is a great stone to use to combat negative energy of any kind by breaking them up and dissipating them. It is helpful to clear unwanted energies from the environment, whether it be home, office, car, or other space indoors or out. Family issues caused by negative energies can also be cleared for resolution with citrine. Citrine is also a stone that brings hope. Since citrine eliminates negative energies, it is good for protection in general and helps bring stability energetically.

Citrine also does not absorb any negative energies from its surroundings, and thus never needs energetic clearing.

Because citrine can clear negative energy and influences from the aura, it is useful for meditation, psychic awareness, and spiritual development. By removing unwanted energies it paves the way for this spiritual and psychic growth. It is also excellent for dream recall and dream work.

In the mental arena, citrine enhances mental clarity, confidence, and will power. The mental clarity and confidence support bringing increased creativity and honesty.Citrine is a happy stone. It can bring happiness to the person who carries or wears it. Because of its removal of negative energy and its own bring positivity, it can relieve depression, self-doubt, anger, and irrational mood swings.

Citrine is used to reduce self-destructive tendencies. Citrine can help overcome emotional traumas and grief that may lead to these emotionally self-destructive issues.

In crystal healing and healing folklore, citrine is said to be beneficial for the digestion, stomach, nightmares, other sleep disturbances, thyroid, general health, heart, kidney, liver, muscles, strength, endocrine system, circulatory system, tissue regeneration, urinary system, immune system, diabetes, fibromyalgia. Citrine is also reputed to be good for removing toxins, and overcoming addictions.

Note that healing crystal meanings are spiritual supports to healing and are not prescriptions or healthcare information.
Sources of citrine include Brazil, Bolivia, several African countries and parts of the Soviet Union.

The Stone Spheres of Costa Rica

The Stone Spheres of Costa Rica
Ancient Mysteries: Ancient Monoliths
By: Justin Klobucar

There are over 300 stone spheres of varying sizes located in Costa Rica that were believed to be constructed by the extinct civilization of the Diquis. The Diquis civilization was in power between 700AD and 1530AD. They fell out of power shortly after the Spanish conquest.

The spheres were discovered in 1930 by workers of the United Fruit Company who were working in the jungle. The spheres were found to be arranged in geometric forms like triangles and parallelograms. There was a line of spheres that pointed to magnetic North, which led some to believe the Diquis civilization had an extensive knowledge of magnetic compasses and astrological alignments. Many were destroyed by workers who thought there may be gold inside. Some were taken and used in architecture in the surrounding cities. Few remain in their original location.

There is much speculation on where the spheres came from and how they were made. Some believe they were from the lost city of Atlantis or that the Diquis had a magic potion to mold the granodiorite boulders to their present form. Archaeologists believe they were made to adorn the path to important chief’s dwellings.

We may never fully know how or why these spheres were created, but they do ad an interesting story to the world of Ancient Mysteries.

Hi, I'm Allan (Al) Schmidt. I'm 52 living in Colorado. I've been married for 27 years. I Retired form the Air Force in 2001 and have been working for the Government in Boulder ever since. I have many hobbies, mostly outdoor, hiking, camping hunting, fishing etc. The main thing that ties them all together is Photography. I've been into the paranormal basically all my life, as my late father was into basically everything paranormal, although he didn't really refer to it as paranormal. Bigfoot, Nessi, UFO's, Little People. He had books on all subjects which I read with a passion. I have been investigating for over 10 years now regularly, and have been all over the country doing so. Locally, have investigated many locations, both with others teams and as I like to do most of the time, by myself or with my wife. I'm very logical in my undertakings, and very skeptical by nature. If I have exhausted all resources and ideas as to how to debunk something, only then will I call it interesting and possibly paranormal. I have not really had any wow moments to speak of, but have had some interesting things happen, enough so to make me more curious.

NPS Article – UFO’s
Al Schmidt
Info Gathered from Al Schmidt and an article by Billy Booth

I grew up in a small town on the Mississippi coast called Gautier. In the early 70’s, there were many UFO sightings up and down the Gulf coast. My best friend had a house on the local bayou, but it had great access to the Gulf and a great view out over it. I spent many a night looking out there…hoping to see a UFO of my own. Only once did I see a light flying fairly low above the horizon, flying faster than any plane I had ever seen. Was it a UFO???
One of the most celebrated and publicized encounters was of 2 local men in the next town over, Pascagoula (Where I Graduated High School) and there close encounter. I had fished from that very same spot on many occasions, but never at night. Their story follows:
Prelude: On the night of October 10, 1973, there was a UFO sighting by fifteen different witnesses who saw a strange, unknown object fly over a housing project in St. Tammany Parish, New Orleans, Louisiana. Two of the witnesses were policeman. This sighting would only be the beginning of what was to occur the next night on the nearby Pascagoula River. Two fishermen, nineteen-year-old Calvin Parker, and forty-two-year-old Charles Hickson were about to have an experience that would forever change their lives.
Parker and Hickson were good friends, and often fished together. They were both living in the town of Gautier, Mississippi. On one particular night, they were fishing the waters of the Pascagoula River, when they heard a strange sound… a type of buzzing. The two men immediately turned to see what the source of the strange noise was.
They were shocked to see an egg-shaped object with bluish front lighting. The object was only a few feet above the water, and about ten yards from the two frightened fishermen.
While they sat stunned, looking at the weird flying machine, a door opened in the UFO, and to their utter amazement, three beings of unknown origin began to float toward the two. The beings did have legs, but did not use them-they literally floated across the water toward Hickson and Parker. The two fishermen would later attempt to describe what the beings looked like “… about five feet tall, had bullet-shaped heads without necks, slits for mouths, and where their noses or ears would be, they had thin, conical objects sticking out, like carrots from a snowman’s head.”
Hickson sat frozen on the river bank. Suddenly, two of the odd-looking beings grabbed him, while the third being snatched Parker, who immediately fainted from fear. The beings supported Hickson by literally holding up his body. As they did, he felt numbness over his entire body. By some power he could not see, he was floated into the bowels of the waiting object to a brightly-lit room.
The room had no gravity. He floated with a strange eye-like device. This device would go over his entire body as if it was scanning him.
After the eye-like device was finished with Hickson, he was left floating in the room alone. The beings had probably left to examine Parker. Approximately 20 minutes after the ordeal had begun, it was over. Hickson was now floated back out of the craft. Back on the river bank, he could see Parker, who was crying and praying on the ground. Shortly, the strange flying object rose straight into the night sky, and flew away.
After some time to regain their senses and strength, they began to talk about what action they should take. At first they were afraid to report their experience, but they felt obligated to tell someone. What if these beings were taking other people in the area? Fighting fears of public ridicule, they called Kessler Air Force Base in Biloxi. They were instructed to report their incident to the local sheriff’s department.
Not wanting to deal with local law enforcement, they decided instead to go to their local newspaper office. The office was closed, which left the men only one recourse-the sheriff office. As would be expected, the local sheriff thought their story was a hoax or trick. Trying to get to the bottom of their story, the two fishermen were placed in a room wired for sound. It was thought that they would discuss the joke between themselves, and their story would be found out. This was not to be. Soon law enforcement personnel knew that something had certainly frightened Hickson and Parker, and that this was no joke.
It would be no time until details of the alleged abduction began to leak out to the public. First, the account of the incident was published in local newspapers, soon followed by the wire services. In a matter of a couple of days, the Pascagoula, Mississippi, abduction was a big news item over the entire United States. Aerial Phenomena Research Organization (APRO) sent University of California professor James Harder to investigate the story. Dr. J. Allen Hynek, who represented the U.S. Air Force also would research the case.
Harder and Hynek did a lot of the investigative work together. The two well-known researchers first interviewed the two fishermen together. Harder tried to do regressive hypnosis on Hickson, but the abductee was so frightened, that the hypnosis was stopped. To get things off on solid ground, both of the witnesses took polygraph tests, and both passed without a problem. Harder and Hynek both believed that the two tormented men were telling the truth.
Esteemed UFO researcher J. Allen Hynek would proclaim that “… there was definitely something here that was not terrestrial.”
Even after thirty-plus years, both Calvin Parker and Charles Hickson still testify to the same story, and have never wavered in their account of what happened that October night on the Pascagoula River.
There have been many articles, magazine reports, and television documentaries done on the case, and the two men have given numerous interviews about their experience. Their account, although bizarre, is one of the best researched and documented alien abduction cases in UFO history.

Crypto and the Eye

By: Ashley Lewis

How does your brain create a picture? When you look at a scene, each of the different ‘seeing’ areas in your brain seems to have a ‘map’ of the scene to which it adds details – like movement, color, depth or shape. Scientists have learnt a lot about how you see by studying patients who have damage to these areas. Damage to any area can mean that the final picture is missing a particular detail.
Many of the neurons in the visual part of the brain respond specifically to edges orientated in a certain direction. From this, the brain builds up the shape of an object. Information about the features on the surface of an object, like color and shading, provide further clues about its identity. Objects are probably recognized mostly by their edges, and faces by their surface features.
When you look at an object, each of your eyes sees a slightly different picture. These signals are brought together in the brain, to help tell how far away an object is. This is what enables us to see ‘magic eye’ pictures. Other clues like shadows, textures and prior knowledge also help us to judge depth and distance.
When you look at a moving object, signals go to a special part of your brain. Damage to this area can stop you seeing movement, even though your sight is otherwise normal. Eye problems, stroke etc.
So how the heck does this have anything to do with Cryptozoology. Think about it. Our brains do a overload of a job when looking at things, objects. Our brain will do whatever it can to create an image out of nothing and our eyes see it.
So, I’m asking. Have you really seen what you think you have seen? How sure are you? What proof do you have? Yes there are many tales, legends and stories that go as far back as we can remember. Did the tale stick with you and you believe it? Or did you really see what you thought you saw? Next time, think about it.
Thank you for your time. To read more articles about Crypto and much much more, visit http://national-paranormal-society.org/

The ‘Evil Eye’ & The Dordolec in Albania

Albania
By Katie Snow

The ‘Evil Eye’ & The Dordolec in Albania

The EVIL EYE, you know, the one that brings damage to all your valued possessions! Even your children!
In Albania this is a very real fear and they have just the cure, The “Dordolec”.

This stunning countryside is peppered with garishly dressed dolls and plush toys that they
straegically place throughout their properties and atop rooftops to protect against such curses.

Dordolec in Albanian means doll or scarecrow and they believe by placing this iconic figure it reduces the
danger of the Evil Eye curse that has shown a sudden emergence throughout their country. This is all related
to the ancient superstition of the ‘evil eye’ and the attempt by the superstitious to retain what
they have.

Traditionally the Dordolec would have been a figure, in the shape of a human, made out of old clothes stuffed with
straw, and many of these can be seen in your travels there, however, they have added plush animals and toys into the
mix. Though this is through the country as stated above the main concentration of these talismans seem to be in the
village of Tirana. They not only grace the rooftops and gardens but now the fences, fruit tress, vines and balconies
of the homes. Comically enough there seems to be a minimalist movement where you can also see just shirts tied to a pole
or a spiderman attached to a vacant building.

The idea of the dordolec is not to frighten away people as the scarecrow ‘frightens’ birds, it’s more complex than that.
The idea is the passer-by ‘fixates’ on the dordolec and in that way doesn’t covet the property on which it’s attached,
it’s there to prevent envy which might lead to someone taking action to acquire that particular piece of wealth. It’s
there to help reinforce one of the strictures of the Ten Commandments, the one about coveting your neighbor’s house,
wife, servants or ox. However, there is no direct correlation between this superstition and religious beliefs.
In Albania such beliefs can be found in all religious communities, Muslim, Orthodox or Catholic.

Just where this ideology has come from seems to vary. Some state the tradition, some state that poor men have a greater
fear of losing what they have. Some even state it was brought back from Greece where many Albanians have been forced to go to in
order to find work after the wholesale destruction of industry in their own country in the last 20 years or so.

Whatever the exact reason for such an upsurge it seems to fit into an isolated society that is looking for something to protect
itself from the hostile world outside.

Mamlambo is said to live in the depths of African rivers. This cryptozoological creature is said to have first been seen several hundred years ago and to still be seen today. The body of Mamlambo is said to be up to 60 feet long and look like a hybrid of a snake and a fish with a horse-like head. Those who have seen this creature say that it measures around 67 feet long and is a solitary creature. No sounds or smells have ever been associated with this mysterious creature. The first time that this creature was observed it was in the Mzintlava river in Southern Africa and since this first sighting it has been feared by various cultures in the area ever since. According to those who have witnessed the creature, the Mamlambo thrives in wetter weather and has been said to drag both animals and people underneath the water to drown them before eating them. According to local legend, the Mamlambo has taken the lives of nine victims to date, the last of which was a young girl whose body was found buried in the dirt beside the river. Perhaps the most gruesome thing about this creature is that it is said to eat the faces of its victims before eating their brains.

Some explain the Mamlambo away as being an Elasmosaur or a type of Archaeocete; however, to those cultures that have seen it, the creature is simply a gruesome monster to be feared.

The Hellfire Caves

The Hellfire Caves
Buckinghamshire, Southeast England

By: Justin Klobucar

The Hellfire Caves are a vast network of man-made tunnels that were constructed between 1748 and 1752 by Francis Dashwood. The caves extend a quarter mile underground beneath the St. Lawrence Church.

The layout of the cave is quite extraordinary. (see below.) Tunnels lead to oddly shaped caverns, the river Styx and in to the inner temple. This is where the Hellfire Club held their bi-monthly meetings. Members of the Hellfire Club were of the wealthiest in England and were said to have practiced mock paganistic rituals. There are many who claim that they engaged in orgies, performed ritualistic sacrifices and other unsavory acts…these claims have never been confirmed.

The group disbanded in 1781 after the death of Francis Dashwood and the caves fell into disrepair. They were renovated in the 1950’s as a tourist attraction. Mannequins and furnishings were added to give the visitors a glimpse of the cave’s eerie past. There are many claims that the caves are haunted by the former members of the Hellfire Club. I know I wouldn’t mind investigating the claims!

The Ancient Star Mounds of America Samoa

The Ancient Star Mounds of America Samoa
By Katie Snow
America Samoa, the visualization of the word brings to mind lush landscaping jutting above the blue waters of
the southern pacific waters. Rain forests and volcanic ridges adds to the tropical climate of this America owned territory.
Along the almost impassable volcanic ridges Tutuila Ma Manu’a lies ancient man made structures called
Tia Seu Lupe, in English Star Mounds. These mostly overgrown structures have been nearly forgotten
by the modern day Samoan but by the sheer number of them found and located in difficult terrain and
the sheer magnitude of their construction attest that these Star Mounds must have been important
to the Ancients.
Constructed of earth and stone and faced with rock or coral slabs, tia seu lupe are basically level-topped platforms
of various sizes and shapes. They can be as large as 30 to 40 meters in diameter and as high as 5 meters. We, English
speakers, call them “star mounds,” because of their distinctive projecting arms or rays. There are
usually five to eight such projections. On Tutuila alone more than 80 star mounds have been discovered.
It is said from early written accounts that Samoan Chiefs took sport in pigeon catching. Now, the English
translation of tia seu lupe is “platform for netting lupe.”Lupe is the Pacific Pigeon (Ducula pacifica pacifica),
a large, fruit-eating forest bird whose succulent flesh has always been prized by Samoans. In the past it was a delicacy
reserved for matai and was included as an important gift in ritual exchanges. Once numerous, today they are so reduced
in numbers that their is a ban against hunting them. However, Star Mounds were probably of greater social significance
than just locations for their chiefs sporting events and the the first Christian missionaries took an early
and virulent dislike to the sport and suppressed it.
One of the most impressive star mounds is the centerpiece of American Samoa’s Tiaseulupe Park. This tia is unique
because rather than being just a simple platform with rays projecting outward in a circle, it is also composed of two
large sections at different elevations. The combined length of the two sections is 34 meters and it rises more than
3 meters above the surrounding rocky terrain.
The question lies in the duality of the use of Star Mounds. Why pick rough terrain high in the mountains?
These would take years to construct and being a ritual were the star mounds used for ritual sacrifices to the
Gods of their time?
After some research into this subject I found the Samoan’s had many deities in which they worshiped that
the Star Mounds could also be used a an altar of sorts or a hollowed place such as
GEGE – A deity who specialized in ridding the Samoan island of Upolu of demons. Operating out of his base at Falealili
he roamed the island, met demons in contests of magic and transformed them into stone. Countless unusual rock formations
are said to be the petrified bodies of the demons overcome by Gege.
PAPA – In the Samoan pantheon she is the goddess of the flatrock base beneath islands. Admittedly that is an oddly
specific designation. She mated with the supreme deity Tangaloa to give birth to some of the Samoan islands.
These are just two of the Gods of worship among many which both would require an Altar of special importance. Another question
comes to mind as well. Who help in the construction of these large mounds I mean mining coral alone would take years to
harvest, was it those from other worldly places that lent a helping hand? We will never really know for certain
just why the star mounds were truly made or how for that matter… the secret lies with those gone before us.

Ebu Gogo has most commonly been sighted in Flores, Indonesia. The creature was first sighted in ancient times and was last seen in the late 19th century. Those who have seen depictions of Ebu Gogo describe it as looking much like a little gremlin. According to noted sightings the Ebu Gogo is a small creature that has a hair covered body. This small creature has disproportionately long arms and a large belly as well as quite large ears. The Ebu Gogo walks bipedally and appears to have an uncomfortable pace. No sighting of this creature has ever noted it as talking to anyone; however, they have been noted as repeating words that were spoken to them or muttering indistinguishably. Fast climbers and strong creatures, the Ebu Gogo are capable and willing to eat anything and everything according to legend, including people. Some believe that the Ebu Gogo is related to the Homo Florensiensis discovered in a cave in Flores. According to local legends however, the Ebu Gogo is a formidable creature and is used to scare children much like the boogie man is used to scare children in the United States. At one point the island of Flores was believed to have belonged to a small race of people not unlike the Ebu Gogo. Legend also tells that at one time humans and the Ebu Gogo lived in close proximity of each other until the Ebu Gogo began to destroy the human’s cattle. Once the humans noted this destruction they drove the Ebu Gogo away by hunting them which angered the Ebu Gogo and caused them to become vengeful. At one point it is said that these creatures even stole a baby from a local village! No very recent sightings of this creature have been noted.

Angels at St Peter’s Basilica

Angels at St Peter’s Basilica

By: Lyza Treadway

Vatican City, Rome, Italy

St Peter’s Basilica is a Holy Hot Spot and a bucket list must do for all types of people from around the world. Christians, art enthusiasts, and history buffs all migrate there for everything from blessings, healing, once in a lifetime photos and a first hand look into history.

It is quite possibly the largest church in the world, and dates back for centuries. It should also come as no surprise that there is the occasional paranormal claim here. People report everything from miraculous healing to seeing spirits of deceased popes, and even Jesus himself.

One of the more intriguing instances, and also one with more documentation than just a claim is the claims made by retired police officer Andy Key and his wife Susan. During their vacation and visit there in 2007, they snapped plenty of pictures.

One specifically has piqued some interest. They claim that as the pope was addressing a nearby crowd, Andy was taking pictures of the surroundings. He thought the way the light was shining in was beautiful and wanted to remember it.

When he and his wife arrived home and started downloading their pictures, they found what appears to be an angel in the sun beams streaming in.

Is this just a simple case of paredolia? Or is it truly a guardian angel watching over the masses of people? Whatever it is, it’s interesting for sure!

Luscas Monster

By: Holly Moreland

These vicious, half-shark, half-octopus man-eaters are said to have inspired terror amongst fishermen and scuba divers in and around the blue holes of the Bahamas for decades.

The island of Andros in the Bahamas is the home to a spectacular array of what the natives refer to as blue holes. Formed during the ice ages of the last million years or so, modern researchers have discovered that these blue holes are a vast network of underwater cave systems, which link the Andros’s small freshwater lakes with the Atlantic Ocean.

Ironically, the confirmation of this oceanic passage has lent some credence to the legend of a HYBRID-BEAST, which is said to dwell in these blue holes… a legend known to locals as the Lusca. These ferocious octo-sharks have been described as being an incredible 75 to 200-feet in length, with the razor sharp teeth of a shark and an array of octopus-like multi-suckered tentacles.

Although the few eyewitnesses who have survived Lusca attacks seem to agree that the above description is accurate, there are others who insist that this animal’s appearance incorporates more of a “squid-eel” combination. Either way, the result is a terrifyingly ferocious predator, which one can only assume is equally horrifying in appearance.

Often believed to be an unknown species of cephalopod like the KRAKEN, the FRESHWATER OCTOPI or Octopus Giganteus (akin to the now infamous ST. AUGUSTINE PHENOMENON) these large, sub-aquatic anomalies have inspired terror in the hearts of generations of Bahamian fishermen.

Legend has it that any encounter with this extraordinary beast almost always results in the death of whoever was unfortunate enough to wander too close to its watery lair. This extends not only to intrepid divers who have dared to brave the labyrinthine depths of the blue holes, but also to those unwary souls who stand too close to the shoreline, as the Lusca — much like the AHUIZOTL and EL CUERO — has been known to use its tentacles to drag even earthbound victims to their watery graves.

Onlookers have even described seeing fishermen’s boats suddenly being yanked below the surface of the blue holes, only to watch in horror as the indigestible flotsam of these broken vessels slowly raises to the surface, their captains and crew nowhere to be seen.

This description of a purported Lusca attack has led some oceanographers to suggest that what people are mistaking for this legendary creature’s voracious appetite may, in fact, be a natural oceanic phenomenon caused by swift tidal changes which suck the water back in through the blue holes, resulting in a spontaneous whirlpool.

These sudden whirlpools roll and boil, and almost certainly hold the potential to pull unwary swimmers — or even entire boats — into its churning depths. When the currents reverse, a frigid, mushroom cloud-like surge of water is gushed back into the small lake, which could force the wreckage to the surface.

While this theory may apply to some cases of mysterious blue hole disappearances it in no way accounts for the colossal tentacles and shark-like maws described by eyewitnesses.

Ahool of Indosesia

By: Holly Moreland

The Island of Java, formed mostly as the result of volcanic activity, is the worlds 13th largest island, and the 5th largest island of Indonesia. Java is one of the most densely populated regions on earth and with a population of roughly 124 million is also the most populated island in the world. It is because of this overpopulation that the rainforests of Java have all but disappeared in recent times, the Gunung Halimun National Park is one of the last remaining stretches of lowland forest on the island. What remains Java’s once great rain forests supports a wide array of wildlife including over 23 mammal species, over 200 bird species, over 500 forms of plant life and according to the native population of the forests is the home to a large unidentified winged creature known as the Ahool.

The Ahool, named after its call, a long ahOOOooool, is said to be a bat like creature, and is described as the size of a one year old child with a gigantic wing span of roughly 12 feet. It is reported to be covered in short, dark grey fur, have large, black eyes, flattened forearms supporting its leathery wings and a monkey like head, with a flattish, man like face. It has been seen squatting on the forest floor, at which times its wings are closed, pressed against the Ahool’s body, its feet appearing to point backwards. It is thought that the Ahool is a nocturnal creature, spending its days concealed in caves located behind or beneath waterfalls; its nights spent skimming across rivers in search of large fish upon which it feeds.

One account of the Ahool occurred in 1925 when naturalist Dr. Ernest Bartels, son of noted ornithologist M.E.G. Bartels, was exploring a waterfall on the slopes of the Salek Mountains when a giant unknown bat, the Ahool, few directly over his head. Two years later in 1927, around 11:30 pm, Dr. Ernest Bartels encountered the Ahool again, this time he was laying in bed, inside his thatched house close to the Tjidjenkol River in western Java, listening to the sounds of the jungle when he suddenly heard a very different sound coming from almost directly over his hut, this loud and clear cry seemed to utter, A Hool! Grabbing his torch Dr. Bartels ran out of his hut in the direction the sound seemed to be heading. Less than 20 seconds later he heard it again, a final A Hool! which floated back towards him from a considerable distance downstream. As he would recall many years later, he was transfixed on the sound, not because he did not know what produced it but rather because he did, the Ahool.

At one time, Bartels had suggested that perhaps the creature was not a bat, but some type of bird, possibly a very large owl, but this theory did not sit well with others and was greeted with passionate denials by his friends, who assured him in no uncertain terms that they were more than capable of distinguishing a bat from a bird.

Bartels accounts of the Ahool were passed down to cryptozoologist Ivan T. Sanderson by Bernard Heuvelmans, and after much research Sanderson concluded that the Ahool is a form of unclassified bat. Sanderson took special interest in the Ahool because he too had met with such a creature, but not in Java, his encounter took place in the Assumbo Mountains of Cameroon, in western Africa. Sanderson thought that the Ahool could be an Oriental form of the giant bat like creature he witnessed in Africa; this creature was known by the African natives as the Kongamato.

Some researchers have suggested that the Ahool may be a surviving population of pterosaur, a flying reptile thought to have gone extinct around the time of the dinosaurs, some 65 million years ago. Indeed the description of the Ahool does match what we currently know about pterosaur species, including large forearms supporting leathery wings. The majority of investigators seem to agree however that the Ahool is more than likely a form of unknown giant bat, looking to the creatures reported facial features as evidence against the flying reptile theory. A third, less popular theory, also based on the reported facial features of the Ahool is that this beast may be the worlds first reported case of a flying primate.

Regardless of which theory you may subscribe to it may only be a matter of time before we find out exactly what the Ahool is. With the continued destruction of Java’s rainforests the Ahool’s habitat continues to shrink which may lead to more encounters with the creature by modern man as we encroach further on its home. Unfortunately the destruction of the Ahool’s home may also lead to its extinction before we even get a chance to fully understand its identity.

The Evidence

There is currently no physical evidence to suggest the existence of a creature like the Ahool living in the rainforests of Java.

The Sightings

In 1925, naturalist Dr. Ernest Bartels, son of noted ornithologist M.E.G. Bartels, was exploring a waterfall on the slopes of the Salek Mountains when a giant unknown bat, the Ahool, few directly over his head.

Bartels was laying in bed, inside his thatched house close to the Tjidjenkol River in western Java, listening to the sounds of the jungle Bartels suddenly heard a very different sound coming from almost directly over his hut, this loud and clear cry seemed to utter, A Hool!

Tinnitus
By Sara Fawley

Most of us have heard of Tinnitus , pronounced ti-NIGHT-us or TINN-a-tus, both are correct. When we think of Tinnitus, we typically thing of “ringing in the ears”. The truth is Tinnitus can manifest in many different ways such as ringing, roaring, swishing, clicking, whistling and even in rare cases music or singing.

According to the U. S. Centers for Disease Control nearly 15% of the general public experience some form of Tinnitus. That is over 45 million Americans alone. Up to 2 million of those have extreme and debilitating cases.

Tinnitus is not a disease itself. It is a symptom of an underlying health condition. While it can be a symptom of a wide range of diseases , it is most frequently associated with some level of hearing loss.

Generally speaking, there are two forms of Tinnitus:

Subjective Tinnitus- Head or ear noise only heard by the patient. It can usually be traced to auditory and neurological reactions to hearing loss, although it can be caused by other illnesses. 99% of all reported Tinnitus cases are subjective.

Objective Tinnitus- Head or ear noises that are heard by other people as well as the patient. These sounds are usually produced by internal functions in the bodies circulatory (blood flow) and somatic (musculo- skeletal movement) systems. Objective Tinnitus is very rare. Less than 1% of all reported Tinnitus cases fall into this category.

There are three general ways to describe the patients perception of the Tinnitus:

Tonal Tinnitus: The perception of near continuous sound or over-lapping sounds. The volume can fluctuate greatly. This type of Tinnitus is associated with subjective Tinnitus.

Pulsatile Tinnitus: The perception of of pulsing sounds, often in beat with the patients own heart. This type of Tinnitus is associated with objective Tinnitus.

Musical Tinnitus: The perception of music or singing, sometimes the same song on a constant loop. This form of Tinnitus is also known as Musical Ear Syndrome and is very rare.

Tinnitus in any form can either be acute ( temporary sudden onset and sudden ceasing of symptoms) or chronic ( continuous recurring symptoms).

In most cases, Tinnitus is a sensorineural reaction in the brain to damage in the ear and auditory system. While most Tinnitus is triggered by hearing loss, there are around 200 different health disorders that can cause Tinnitus. Here is a list of some of the most common:

Middle ear obstructions such as excessive wax build-up,head congestion, loose hair from the ear canal, dirt or foreign objects. In most cases removal of the object will clear up the Tinnitus symptom.

Head and Neck Trauma- Severe injury to the head or neck can cause nerve, blood-flow and muscle issues that can cause Tinnitus.
Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ) – The Tinnitus associated with this disease is of the somatic type of Tinnitus. The TMJ is where the lower jaw connects to the skull and is in front of the ears. Damage to the muscles, ligaments or cartilage in the TMJ can cause Tinnitus.

Sinus Pressure- Nasal congestion for a cold, flu or sinus infection can cause abnormal pressure in the middle ear causing Tinnitus symptoms.

Acute Barotrauma-This is caused by extreme or rapid changes in air or water pressure causing damage to the middle ear.

Traumatic Brain Injury- This can damage the brain’s auditory processing centers causing Tinnitus.

Ototoxic Drugs- Many prescription medications can cause temporary Tinnitus symptoms including NSAIDS, Quinie-based medications and diuretics.

This is not a complete list there are other categories of illness such as Metabolic Disorders, Auto-immune disorders and Blood-Vessel disorders that can cause Tinnitus symptoms.

What does all of this have to do with the paranormal? It is just one other possible reason for that whistling , banging, knocking, whooshing or singing you may be hearing. This is why it is so important when we hear recurring unidentified noises that we check with our doctors to rule out medical implications before going to the paranormal.

The Haunting At Blue Limestone Park

The Haunting At Blue Limestone Park
Delaware, OH

By Lyza Treadway

Any major accident, especially one involving the railroad and trains, is bound to come with a ghost story. This is no exception.

In small town Ohio, during the 1920’s, the community was rocked by a devastating train derailment. Some say it took weeks to clean up. Others say the accident never even happened, almost like a big cover up conspiracy. As with most tales of ghosts, the details are hard to pin down of exactly what happened, as accounts vary. Legend has it that dozens died as a train slipped off the tracks as it was passing over a tunnel, and wound up in a quarry.

In more recent years, the park has been the sight of occult activity based on remnants left behind and graffiti plastered around. The site of a mass death might just be the perfect place to raise the dead, or for teens looking to scare others.

People say if you go to the park at night, you will see strange lights moving. They also say that if you go near the tunnel where the accident allegedly occurred, you will hear crying and voices asking for help. Are the lights simple reflections, orbs, or spirits manifesting? Could the voices be a simple acoustic trick of the tunnel, water, and trains vibrating from the tracks that are still in use? Nobody has stuck around long enough to find out, or at least lived to share their story.

Demonic Possession and the resemblance to Anti-NMDA Receptor Encephalitis.

By Holly Moreland

Lets talk today about “demonic possession” and the resemblance to Anti-NMDA Receptor Encephalitis. What is Anti-NMDA Receptor Encephalitis you ask? I will get to that in a minute. I first want to tell you what originally sparked my interest in this particular subject. I am guilty! My interest did not come from the very well known movie “The Exorcist”, but came from watching a movie “Exorcism of Emily Rose”. Many of you may have watched this movie based on the case of Anneliese Michel. Now I am not saying that Anneliese suffered from this disease. Only that it peeked my interest and some of the symptoms are so similar. Makes one wonder if this disease had been discovered back then if it was possible it could have been the cause and had a different outcome.

I came across an actual case of Susannah Cahalan. A healthy 24 year old reporter for the New York Post. She was the 217th person to be diagnosed with this disease in 2009. The disease was first identified in 2007. I have attached a link to one of many articles telling her story.

Anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis is a rare autoimmune disease that can attack the brain. Antibodies turn on the brain its self and causes it to swell. The disease mostly infects young women and is often mis diagnosed as psychological disorders, and possibly demonic possession. Although extremely rare, you can see why asking the tough questions and searching for all answers is crucial to the paranormal community.

Main symptoms

Flu-like symptoms

Memory deficits, including loss of short-term memory;

Sleep disorders;

Speech dysfunction – the patient is no longer able to produce coherent language or may be completely unable to communicate

Cognitive and behavioral disturbances – confused thinking, hallucinations, delusional thinking, dis inhibited behaviors;

Seizures;

Movement disorders – usually of the arms and legs and the mouth and tongue, but may include full body spasms. These types of movements are very common in Anti-NMDA Receptor Encephalitis and the patient is unable to control them. They are often quite severe, requiring the patient to be restrained and sedated for their own safety and those of their care-givers. Sometimes patients are unable to move, and may appear like a statue, holding the same position for hours or days (catatonia);

Loss of consciousness – The patient may be semi-conscious or may slip into a coma;

Autonomic dysfunction – erratic breathing, heartbeat and blood pressure; loss of bladder control and bowel movements;

Central hypoventilation – the patient may stop breathing, and may require a mechanical breathing machine.

Vision and/or hearing may also be impaired.

I encourage you to read Susannah’s story! How her life was turned upside down! Her symptoms were mimicking that of what some people believe to be demonic possession. Also read the article attached on the disease. What are your thoughts? What might we ask or do if we come across such a case this extreme?

How To Keep The Pareidolia Under Control

How To Keep The Pareidolia Under Control
by Jim Brown for NPS

Previous articles I have written have covered equipment quality and how we are all influenced by pareidolia. It was shown that most “evidence” can be dismissed due to pareidolia, and that we all fall victim to this phenomena. This article will address a couple methods we can use to help reduce the influence of pareidolia on our audio recordings.

There are two major factors that come into play when we do EVP / AVP work. The first are our preconceptions. We enter an area and begin asking questions. Unwittingly we have already set ourselves up for pareidolia. We expect an answer! Our minds are keyed up for a response to our questions. And often we begin by asking something like ,”Is anyone here?”

How stupid is that! We expect a “Yes” answer, otherwise why would we even be here in the first place? We have already conditioned ourselves for an expected response before it even comes. Not only that, the expected response is actually favored by the conditions at hand! Consider the fallacy of even asking a “Yes-No” question.

Let’s look at the word “Yes” itself. It is comprised of three phonemes; A minor (not emphasized) “y” sound at the beginning, the major “eh” phoneme at the center, followed by an “ss” sound at the end of the word. Provide those phonemes and pareidolia will allow almost everyone to hear the word “Yes” regardless of whether the phonemes are real or just approximations of the word. Now where might these sounds originate?

All recordings have a certain level of electron hiss present. That sound mimics the “SS” sound in speech. It is available to add its influence at all times. Next the minor “y” sound. That is not a strong phoneme and in fact may not even be present, yet if conditions are right, pareidolia will supply it to the interpretation. So really all we need is a trigger; something like the “eh” sound. It turn out that this one of the most common sounds in speech, and also is very similar to many background sounds we encounter. So we ask the question and something makes a sound similar to the “eh” sound. Our mind picks up on that and immediately also notices the faint electron noise hiss in the background. Now we hear “ehss”! The “y” sound is not really there, but it doesn’t take much for the pareidolia effect to add it in. And of course, we are already conditioned to expect a positive response. So now we have the answer to our question, “Is anyone here?” “y+eh+ss” or YES!

What about “No”? “NO” involves two phonemes, however both are much less likely to be generated than those in the word “Yes”. First, both are major, that is strong. They are also of longer duration. Thus the probability of spurious generation is reduced meaning the probability of pareidolia generating the word “NO” is greatly reduced. This can be proven if one simply looks at responses claimed to be EVP by those who have done sessions. You will find that “YES” responses outnumber “NO” responses claimed by about four to one. Between the preconception of expecting a “Yes” response and the characteristic of the word itself it can be shown that pareidolia is responsible for most of these claims.

What can we do to minimize this effect? The best method is to ask questions requiring a more in depth response. As the number of phonemes increases the probability of pareidolia decreases simply because the response becomes more complex. One or two phonemes may accidentally fall together to form a word, but putting 8 or 10 together at random is much less probable, unless of course speech is actually present. So ask questions requiring opinion or observation, not single word responses. Responses will come much less frequently, but it is no coincidence that pareidolia also decreases.

The second way we can identify pareidolia is by a more careful review of any recording we may obtain. Earlier I mentioned how pareidolia builds words from phonemes. We can be more diligent about those phonemes. Let’s reconsider the word “Yes”, and its three phonemes. Listen critically, are ALL those phonemes really there? Make an effort to hear each including the minor “y” sound. Does the “S” sound end abruptly as a word or does it just fade into the background like electron hiss? Often a critical analysis of the word reveals it is not as it first seems. Pareidolia has struck again! And if we can identify it as such we will obtain much more reliable evidence and less easily debunked wishful thinking.

St. Michael’s Prayer for Protection

By Lillee Allee

There is only one entity in the history of the Church that is both an angel and a saint: St. Michael the Archangel. This protection prayer is particularly good for paranormal teams, though St Michael is the patron saint of the military and the police. He also is patron of grocers, mariners, paratroopers, and sickness. The story around the creation of this prayer is particularly unusual.

In 1884, Pope Leo XIII was in conference with Cardinals (high priests of the Catholic Church). He celebrated Mass, and suddenly fainted. Physicians were called and found no pulse. Suddenly, the pontiff came back and explained that he had had a horrible vision of evil spirits released from their captivity in hell in order to destroy the Church. He then saw St. Michael appear and threw them all back into the pit. He then wrote out the long prayer you will find below. It was also part of practice for the St. Michael Prayer to be said in church after a low mass during Vatican I. This practice vanished with the beginning of Vatican II.

St. Michael’s feast day was originally September 29th and some still celebrate that today. His color (for candles, for example) is red, and his direction is south when occult rituals place angels in every quarter of a ritual. His name, which a direct nod to his story in the Christian Bible, means “Who is like God?” In angel hierarchy, he is a prince of the Seraphim.

Sacred places devoted to Michael first appeared in the 4th century, as a healing angel, and then believers saw him as a protector and the leader of the army of God against By the 6th century, devotions to Archangel Michael were widespread both in the Eastern and Western Churches. Today Christians and others venerate St. Michael.

The popular short version (most common:

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the malice and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen

In Latin, the Vatican I version:

Sáncte Míchael Archángele, defénde nos in proélio, cóntra nequítiam et insídias diáboli ésto præsídium. Ímperet ílli Déus, súpplices deprecámur: tuque, prínceps milítiæ cæléstis, Sátanam aliósque spíritus malígnos, qui ad perditiónem animárum pervagántur in múndo, divína virtúte, in inférnum detrúde. Ámen

The long original version:

“O Glorious Prince of the heavenly host, St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in the battle and in the terrible warfare that we are waging against the principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, against the evil spirits. Come to the aid of man, whom Almighty God created immortal, made in His own image and likeness, and redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of Satan.

“Fight this day the battle of the Lord, together with the holy angels, as already thou hast fought the leader of the proud angels, Lucifer, and his apostate host, who were powerless to resist thee, nor was there place for them any longer in Heaven. That cruel, ancient serpent, who is called the devil or Satan who seduces the whole world, was cast into the abyss with his angels. Behold, this primeval enemy and slayer of men has taken courage. Transformed into an angel of light, he wanders about with all the multitude of wicked spirits, invading the earth in order to blot out the name of God and of His Christ, to seize upon, slay and cast into eternal perdition souls destined for the crown of eternal glory. This wicked dragon pours out, as a most impure flood, the venom of his malice on men of depraved mind and corrupt heart, the spirit of lying, of impiety, of blasphemy, and the pestilent breath of impurity, and of every vice and iniquity.

“These most crafty enemies have filled and inebriated with gall and bitterness the Church, the spouse of the immaculate Lamb, and have laid impious hands on her most sacred possessions. In the Holy Place itself, where the See of Holy Peter and the Chair of Truth has been set up as the light of the world, they have raised the throne of their abominable impiety, with the iniquitous design that when the Pastor has been struck, the sheep may be.

“Arise then, O invincible Prince, bring help against the attacks of the lost spirits to the people of God, and give them the victory. They venerate thee as their protector and patron; in thee holy Church glories as her defense against the malicious power of hell; to thee has God entrusted the souls of men to be established in heavenly beatitude. Oh, pray to the God of peace that He may put Satan under our feet, so far conquered that he may no longer be able to hold men in captivity and harm the Church. Offer our prayers in the sight of the Most High, so that they may quickly find mercy in the sight of the Lord; and vanquishing the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, do thou again make him captive in the abyss, that he may no longer seduce the nations. Amen.

V. Behold the Cross of the Lord; be scattered ye hostile powers.

R. The Lion of the tribe of Judah has conquered the root of David.

V. Let Thy mercies be upon us, O Lord.

R. As we have hoped in Thee.

V. O Lord, hear my prayer.

R. And let my cry come unto Thee.

Let us pray.

O God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we call upon Thy holy Name, and as supplicants, we implore Thy clemency, that by the intercession of Mary, ever Virgin Immaculate and our Mother, and of the glorious St. Michael the Archangel, Thou wouldst deign to help us against Satan and all the other unclean spirits who wander about the world for the injury of the human race and the ruin of souls. Amen.”

Choosing The Proper Digital Recorder for EVP Work

Choosing The Proper Digital Recorder for EVP Work

by Jim Brown for NPS

First, to be clear I am not recommending any particular make or model.  To do so would require that I have actually tested it in my lab under controlled conditions.   Since my name is not Donald Trump, I can’t afford to buy one of everything and conduct the level of testing needed to make such a determination of which is “Best”.

What I can do is post a list and explain the specifications your recorder must meet to conduct such research and minimize false positives.  You can also use this list to determine the proper setting for your recorder; even the most expensive recorders can be downgraded by their settings to be rendered useless.  No matter what recorder you use it is your obligation to use settings which meet or exceed these specifications.

So let’s begin.

  1. Your recorder shall record in stereo (Two or more independent tracks). This is done for two purposes.  First since we have two ears it allows us to form a sense of direction for the source.  That same audio can also be used with an oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer should you want to conduct more intense spatial analysis of the area.  (I won’t go into all that here, suffice it to say spatial analysis requires two channels sourced from mics a known distance apart.)   The second reason is redundancy.  Two mics using two separate amplifiers are unlikely to pick up the same external interference should it occur.  Thus stereo recordings provide their own reference against each other.

  1. Your recorder shall use a 24 bit wide A to D converter. Many voice recorders only use 16.  The number of bits represent the number of possible audio levels available for conversion.  This is the resolution of your audio and directly affects the amount of conversion errors. (All conversion has some.)  An analogy to this is better understood in photography.  All factors equal, a 15 megapixel camera can produce a much sharper picture than a 4 megepixel camera.  Thus the possibility of canversion errors and pareidolia is reduced by the higher bit count.

  1. Your recorder shall sample at 96 KBPS or higher. The sample rate is the number of conversions made each second.  I won’t go into Nyquist Points and how the conversion errors increase as the signal approaches the frequency of the signal.   Suffice it to say that to obtain a good conversion with minimal aliasing the sample rate must be at least 3 times the highest frequency being converted. Since the “S” sounds in speech require up to 4 kHz, one might suspect that a sample rate of 12 kBPS would be sufficient.   But that would be wrong.

The Nyquist Point applies to sinosodial waveforms.  Speech is irregular and contains harmonics needed to provide proper inflections.  If we were to look at how the various frequencies interact on a scope it can be shown that we must provide the second, third, and fourth harmonic to properly represent the signal.  Thus our “S” sound is not 4 kHz, but 12 kHz!  So the minimum sample rate has just been bumped up to 36 KBPS.

I added the extra sampling simply because we don’t know what EVP is. We can’t definitively say there is no EVP audio above the “S” sound.  So extending it to 96 KBPS actually allows good converion with minimal error up to 6 Khz, just in case something else is present at the higher audio frequency.

  1. Your Recorder shall use a non-lossy conversion protocol. One of the problems facing digital recording is file size.  As a result to keep size down a system called Code-Excited Linear Prediction (CELP) was developed.  While I won’t get into the complex algorithms involved, in summary it looks at each sample then makes a prediction what the next SHOULD be.  Thus some samples can be  skipped to minimize memory usage, the algorithm fills in for the ones ommitted.  But since we don’t know what represents an EVP, how can we determine what can be safely removed from one?

The solution is to use a protocol known as Pulse-Code Modulation. (PCM) This is a much simpler method; it simply samples the audio and saves each conversion.  Thus there are no conversion errors introduced, but at the expense of requiring much more memory capacity and large files.  Thus to satisy this requirement your recorder shall use PCM, not CELP for conversion.

  1. Your Recorder shall use a non-lossy file format. Related to conversion is file handling. Losses and errors are introduced if a file is compressed.  Many recorders use the MP3 format to keep file size down.  This is unacceptable.  Rather the proper format is WAV.  This simply saves the digital equivalent of the audio without compression.  So your EVP recordings must be in uncompressed WAV format.  (Note:  Beware, some variations of WAV exist which do involve compression algorithms.  These are also unacceptable.)

All of the above specifications can be obtained from manufacturer’s spec sheets for any machine you may be considering.   There is a sixth requirement that is generally more difficult to obtain but is very important.   Usually (Rule of thumb here)  the more the recorder costs the more likely it is to meet this requirement.

  1. Your recorder shall incorporate adequate shileding against stray EM Fields. Failure here produces “EVP” caused by radio broadcasts or other outside interference.  Tests to verify proper shielding can be done in a lab where a strong RF field is generated around the recorder while recording.  The recorder should pick up no interference from the RF.   You can also do a quick and dirty version of this test yourself if you live near a strong AM radio station.   Simply visit the transmitter site and record silence.  If the radio station can be heard the recorder fails the test.  (Not definitive but it does rule out some of the more obvious failures before they get used to create more false EVP.)

Next: EVP Session methods.

Strengths and Limitations of Qualitative and Quantitative Research

By Lillee Allee

Research methods in social sciences fall into two basic categories: qualitative or quantative. Simply defined, qualitative research involves open-ended questions, diaries and interviews. While these studies are helpful, actual analysis can be difficult. Quantitative research can be ranked, reduced to numbers, measurements and ratings. Thus, analysis is made easier with clearer conclusions. Some work offers quantitative and qualitative data such as a questionnaire which will have yes/no answers (reduced to numbers) and descriptions of events (which are qualitative.

Qualitative studies have many strengths and limitations, as do quantitative works.

Leedy and Ormond (2005) point out that problems may arise with quantitative research because it is often in a manipulated, experimental setting (such as a laboratory). While the researcher’s level of control is high in a quantitative study, there is also a chance that the results may not transfer to the general population in natural settings

Case studies would fall under qualitative research. Qualitative methods are invaluable to explore an issue and to gain some understanding, but also can be very limited in terms of generalizations. As Leedy and Ormond also note, with some qualitative studies, again such as an investigation, the researcher becomes a part of the experiment itself and this can cause some problems relating to objectivity. There is also a need for the researcher to remain understanding and willing to spend time understanding his or her role and not bring personal bias into the equation. This could inevitably cause confusion in later analysis and in provided conclusions that the data seems to support, but is ultimately flawed.

Gathering data can also be tricky. If there is more than one observer, it is very important that their results agree in terms of actual behaviors observed. Inter-rater reliability is defined as “the correlation between several ratings by independent evaluators of a variable (for example, participant’s performance) that is, the extent of agreement among the evaluators” (Corsini, 2002, p. 502). Leedy and Ormrod state it “is the extent to which two or more individuals evaluating the same product or performance give identical judgments” (p. 97). This is an important area that needs to be discussed between paranormal teams and the entire community.

Apple users are still in the minority compared to PC users with computers, though the IPhones and IPads certainly are popular. One of the big questions is how to screen shot as it is different for Apple Users

On your Apple computer:

  • Make sure that everything that you want to shoot is visible on your screen.
